Jarrad Boumann TO Hawthorn

Good to see we committed to Jarrad.

The kid's worked his arse off this year, and the coaches have seen something in him that they can develop.

As much as I was confused by the Lisle trade-Freo pick swap scenario, it seems to have come down to Boumann being the preferred key backman and the club doing what was needed to secure him.

Just happy we didnt take the Carlton approach and sit on our hands for the entire week. Our boys made things happen and at least they had a crack. Cant ask for more than that really.....

Fact is we will most likely never know exactly the thinking behind each move made over the past 7 days and I'm not sure where Boumann will fit into the picture long term but he is obviously part of the plan.

Irrespective of confusing trading of picks I'm very happy that Wright & Co found their man and did whatever they had to and made it happen.

Ok so call me stooopid but I just dont understand why Freo had to be involved in the deal for Bournam. I get that this would have been part of the mega deal but when that got knocked back, why couldnt we just offer GWS without giving Freo the benefit of pick 29.
ps I dont have an issue with getting him or the deal that was done. Just confused as to how/why it was worked that way

Freo had the rights to him.

In effect we had to buy him off Freo.

I don't know that Freo necessarily wanted Boumann, but they had the rights to a prelisted player from GWS, and GWS had a limited number of these to give out, and weren't going to give out any more. If we wanted Boumann we had to trade for it off Freo.

Freo got the rights as part of their earlier trade of picks with GWS but it wasn't mentioned officially. My theory is that if they'd put the paper work in they would have needed to nominate the player then, but they weren't sure which player they wanted, or wanted to be able to on-trade as part of the Clark deal (or some other deal) and didn't want to lock it to a particular player.

The trade with Freo got us these rights, and then we dealt with GWS. As each trade needs to stand on its own, and since officially (on paper that is) Freo didn't have the rights, we can't come out and say any of this.

Good to see Box Hill players eventually going to us.

So how does he compare to other recent Box Hill boys Cam Pederson and Lucas Markovic who seem similar in physique and are currently on AFL lists

Yeah, I think SS JP has nailed it.

Yet, why give Fremantle pick 29. Wouldn't giving the pick direct to GWS have achieved the same result?

Hawthorn appear to have addressed two perceived weaknesses in this trade period. The need for a Mark Williams type forward and a taller KPD. Time will tell whether they are successful.

Never seen Boumann play. By all the reports by Box Hill watchers he seems to fit the Clarkson type of rebounding defender over the strong one on one KPD. There will always be points for and against this, well one could say, mantra.

I think Clarkson still wants a strong bodied defender to match big forwards. Chasing Gillies indicates this, who, if allowed, could develop that strong body and hold his own against big forwards even though he may have a height disadvantage. I hope the cub can get him next year or a very similar type. They are very hard to come by and will be expensive.

At the end of the day Boumann was the best tall defender available and the club rolled the dice.

Thanks. That explains it but dont understand why it wasnt made an official part of the trade.

This is the one frustrating thing, I'm pretty sure its outside the rules of the game. Each individual trade is meant to be fair and equitable without the need for a further deal for balance, this obviously wasn't the case withe the Freo/gws & freo/hawks swaps, it's all fair when viewed as a collective however.

Same people that made character judgements on Hooper and Peterson....how did they turn out.....

His attitude was only small problem, the fact that at his size he will be in the bottom quartile at Hawks in there benchpress is his problem, very physically weak which is a serious problem for a KD at AFL level, if he gets to Zac Dawson level he will be lucky.

At 197cm tall, he doesn't seem to be too skinny. The photo is from Box Hill hawks website and would have been at the start of the year. Already seems more solid than the Zac Attack.
Weighs in at 90kg which is a decent heft, probably ideal playing weight for his height is 93 - 95kgs. Fitness coaches will have something to work with.

Also, can we have no more posts about why we didn't just trade pick 29 to GWS. How many times does the complex arrangement for pre-listed players need to be be explained.

Just take it as an article of faith and move on......

Maybe the Hawks recruiting team finally gave into the Big Footy posters busting their balls about how they should get this player, and that player and why don't we give this guy from Box Hill. They finally listened just to shut you mob up... and if Boumann fails to make an impact, you're the ones to blame! YOU!!!

You forgot: "All of you"

The dogs are still bitter about the Josh Hill fiasco and how we dodged a bullet due to Eade and Fantasy Land Man. Phew.

Just move on dogs.

It's clear that Clarko and coaches have been impressed with Boumann.

There were many games where Box Hill's midfield capitulated this year. This is the perfect time to see how a Key Defender copes with the pressure. By all accounts, he handled it well. My guess is that, like most of our Box Hill youngsters, Boumann will play better with high quality team mates around him, in the seniors.

One thing we saw last year was that the club was willing to give opportunities to youngsters. I expect that to be the case with Boumann.

I'm most pleased with this pick because our coaching staff and recruiters have had ALL season to carefully watch him. They would have seen his weaknesses too and if they felt they weren't fixable they would have moved on.

For the record, the club obviously rates Boumann ahead of Lisle too.:thumbsu:

......So how does he compare to other recent Box Hill boys Cam Pederson and Lucas Markovic who seem similar in physique and are currently on AFL lists

Pederson is a better mark, Marko is a great straight line defender. JBo has better foot skills and is more athletic than both. Marko nor Pedo would have got game time with us.

I dont subscribe to the club knows best we know d!ck. However in this case where we would have seen him all season I reckon they have a clue.

Given his history of being on a list, then being dumped it is not a lock that he will make it. Well worth a punt for mine.

That's what stood out to me in the highlights vid, he seemed confident in hitting short targets, even through traffic. That kind of fits in with the current gameplan if he can keep it up under the pressure of AFL...

Obviously a lot of water to go under the bridge between now and Rd 1 and I imagine he'll get game time in NAB Cup to give us some idea of how he'll fit in... but do we think he will play straight up if Gilham isn't ready to go?

No it doesn't. Gillies is in the mould of Gilham (body shape wise) same height same weight etc. From watching VFL and I'm sure cats supporters will agree, Gillies is more of a BP/HBF player and will probably play the role of Milburn. He has played KPD but was pushed and thrown around like a rag doll.

That is comforting to hear that you rate JBo's footskills above Pedos. Pedo is a solid kick especially for goal. Marko isn't the greatest kick. He looks a bit awkward to me does JBo and normally awkward types arent great kicks so my mind is at ease to a degree.

I disagree about Pedo not getting game time with us in 2011. He would have played games if he was listed. Lisle got games. FFS PJ got a game!!!

I don't understand the negative attitude. After box hill games this year the conversation regularly turned to boumann and how we should pick him up in the draft. Now we have done just that.

Indeed a very good point. The guy has worked very very hard to turn his game around and he has done just that. I was ecstatic when I heard news of us looking at him, the guy can play.
