Most American athletes travel across the country at 18 to go to college (and earn nothing) for a chance to play NHL/NBA/NFL.

I haven't heard any of many (if any) college transfers for homesickness at collegiate level, let alone pro..

The top college athletes can chose which college they go to ie aren’t forced to go somewhere until they are paid handsomely to do so.

These days they are also paid to play in college via NIL.

The motivation levels are just different also, for a lot of the athletes going pro is a winning lottery ticket for there whole family. In the AFL a first round draft pick, would just have enough for a house deposit at the end of there first contract, A first round NBA pick could buy a decent place and have plenty of change,

Been thinking about JHF a bit.

Whilst he's obviously a great talent, and the style of player we could certainly do with, Im worried we'd be selling the farm for him.

Can we really afford to part with two or three top end picks for the sake of one player? We still have too many gaps in our list to part with that sort of currency for just one player.

- we must invest midfield time in our 20-22 year old mids - Berry, Hately, Harry

- Rachelle could still develop his engine and become an elite mid who hits the scoreboard.

- Soligo looks tough as nails, is quick and can also use the ball reasonably well. I'm hopeful he can become a full time mid.

- Pedlar is potentially an elite user who we still need to invest time in.

- Gollant may be out the door at seasons end, Fog is a 2nd/3rd string forward at best, and Thilthorpe may not even be a perm forward for us.

I think we need to tank from here and ensure we can recruit Tom Scully in the draft.

Tell me which big deal trades have worked out for the club receiving the gun..

Last I checked, the following teams didn't win a flag off the back of their big deals. Sure the Dogs got a good GF out of Boyd, but he didn't exactly help get them there, and he certainly didn't do much after. They got lucky with him on GF day.

Geelong paying 9, 28 and Gore for Dangerfield.

Bris paying 5, 25 and Crisp for Beames

Dogs paying Griffen and 6 for Boyd

Carl paying 3, 20 and Kennedy for Judd

Haw paying 15, 35 and Burton for Wingard

Ess paying 9 and 14 for Shiel and 42

Freo paying 6 and 23 for Hogan

WCE paying a shitload of picks for T.Kelly

Not many clear winners in there for the team receiving the gun, when you consider they've sacrificed some of their future.

I'd rather invest in the draft and youth for a couple more years, then top up via Free Agency / Trade in a couple of years once we know where we are at.

Imagine if we'd spent two first rounders to get Luko back a couple of years ago.

We would probably have no Rachele or Thilthorpe.
Scully would want to light up the Nationals and possibly play some SANFL at a reasonable standard before we'd be using our 1st pick on him at this point.

Harry Lemmey has to still be the leading SA KPF prospect IMO, his ability to put space on his opponent when leading is superior to all the other KPF's in this draft. Had a slow start to the season with illness but showed he's getting back to his best last outing.

I agree I think Pedlar has the attributes to be a very very good footballer but he will never be the kind of footballer that is classed as an elite user.

Interesting the fact that it unravelled so quickly reflects poorly on him too. My gut is he will do everything he can to get to port . Whilst we should absolutely try to get him we utterly mismanaged the draft . Hate to say it but if port had the same trade currency that we had they would have done whatever it takes. We are soft
Mismanaged the draft? What bs. Not only have rachele and soligo shown plenty, jhf hasn't shown that much. We offered 3 first rounders for him too. What else could we have offered?

the thing with Port is that they're already working out who they can push out that has value to get the capital required. We wouldn't part with Matt Crouch because we believe that's not what good clubs do.
Despite us shopping crouch last year and getting no takers

No idea the contract status but i could easily see them offering their 1st, next years and duursma for JHF and maybe a 2nd coming back. If i was north and had to deal with port, i'd be stating marshall as part of any trade as he finally looks like the forward port hoped he could be
They could offer that but it still wouldn't be as good as what we could offer

So who would we give up to make the deal happen?
For me the only untouchables are Dawson, Rachele and Thilthorpe
Ideally a first rounder, a second and a player

Port have better player options in Butters, Georgiades or Duursma

2 of those 3 are playing sanfl. Duursma is rubbish

He was RFA you numpty. We couldn’t shop him, he was free to the highest bidder. Try harder or be smarter, whichever works.
Yes and we told him to look at his options. You are aware we would get compo if anyone offered him a deal? Maybe you missed it because you were too busy having a whinge on social media about whatever. Keep trying

How do you “shop around” a player that can walk anywhere for zero draft capital? Seriously, how could we stop him looking at his options. Come on, there’s got to be a relevant example for you to raise, look harder, Crouch just isn’t it.

We would get compo for him and told him to pursue his options. We get capital just not from another team.
Port love this narrative that they trade aggressively to get what they want. In reality they trade players that don't want to be there any more. Wingard and ladhams are both examples of this
Using the same logic we aggressively traded out lever cameron and mcnuggets

No we didn’t, we didn’t push either of CC or McNuggets out, they chose to leave. We just actually drove a decently hard bargain at the trade table for a change. Same as Lever. That’s 0 from 3, you swing and you miss, try harder.

By not being the first to initiate the offer.....very basic logic knowledge.

If you read between the lines, it seemed we were willing to let crouch walk without much of a fight

Read what i wrote, i know it's hard. The discussion started saying port trades aggressively. I am saying they don't, they trade players that want out same as us. Cc and gov were in fact both contracted when traded. You have fallen for port's narrative if you believe different.
What port do is make use of what they get better which is more due to our poor drafting prior to the last 2 years.
You also said we wouldn't have the guts to get rid of crouch. I am saying we actively tried to, it's just that no one wanted him

That was how you read what were posted....you need basic English knowledge before acquiring basic football knowledge. lol.

Yeh, we shopped crouch around, god you’re a simpleton.
You shop a FA player around by not being the first to initiate an offer which then tells his manager to do his job and ask other clubs....it's that simple. But there were no bites and he got a "minimal" of 2 years in the history of FA offers (I would have given him 1 though).
