Most American athletes travel across the country at 18 to go to college (and earn nothing) for a chance to play NHL/NBA/NFL.
I haven't heard any of many (if any) college transfers for homesickness at collegiate level, let alone pro..
The top college athletes can chose which college they go to ie aren’t forced to go somewhere until they are paid handsomely to do so.
These days they are also paid to play in college via NIL.
The motivation levels are just different also, for a lot of the athletes going pro is a winning lottery ticket for there whole family. In the AFL a first round draft pick, would just have enough for a house deposit at the end of there first contract, A first round NBA pick could buy a decent place and have plenty of change,
