Rockliff and Boak - Thriving in their natural roles, both turned back the clock today

Watts - Looks good now that he's out of our cluster**** of a forward line, hopefully has a much better season ahead of him

Butters - Gun, lock for Round 1

Amon - Has probably just had his best two weeks in a Port guernsey. Never would've thought I'd be saying this a month ago but he's earned himself a spot for around 1 IMO.

Duursma - Don't care how much Ken apparently likes him, he's not ready. Has potential but he's still way too error prone and has no composure whatsoever. Give his spot to Mayes.

Is he playing more forward?

Enjoyed the game . Stood by the N.M. Interchange box and had fun calling out to Polly “ hey Polly you’ve dropped some money out your pocket “ and ‘ hey Polly , shout the bar a beer “ and for Jasper “ if only we still had Pittard “
To be fair Polly played well for them , couldn’t believe Ben Browns prep for his goalkicking . Must’ve had a 20 metre walk up before he kicked .
For us , was very happy with Lycett , thought he got involved really well , he’s nice and tall and strong with reasonable skills so will definitely be an asset.
Rocky and Boak were great . Defence was solid . Impressed by Butters , Watts was quite good as was Westhoff and SPP .
Pretty happy with Drew and Rozee who I’d play round 1 along with Butters .
Maybe Duursma might need to build his game a little but he looked quite good . Marshall got better as the game went on .
Overall a good day , we probably should have won by more , the umps were pretty ordinary, directly costing us a few goals .
Good crowd 6,000 odd and always great to get down to Alberton for a game

Third quarter was excellent. Roos couldn't get on the board and we were threatening to blow them away.

Scott slowed the game down and started some slower and deliberate ball movement. It dried up our scoring a bit but they failed to score as well so we responded reasonably well.

He said in his presser that it will be hard to stop teams when they get ontop, so that's a compliment in a way.

Lycett had a huge influence around the ground which is good news given the Ryder concerns. His opponent wasn't much chop though.

We are very hard to read as to where we are at. I feel like no Wines and Dixon is a big issue structurally and experience wise going into R1 and it will be a challenge to effectively cover.

Burton yet to really find his groove, as with Ebert. Many questions and not many answers. Marshall finding his feet but I think we need to persist.

It's going to be a rough ride with ups and downs this year imo.

All in all a solid performance but our defence is still a concern. Conceding 100 points against a North Melbourne forward line won't win you premierships that's for sure.

Work cut out for round 1. Big ask I feel but we are capable.

Replace Roos with South Adelaide and Scott with whoever is coaching South Adelaide and it's like I watched the same 3rd quarter. I think that's a good sign that it's working at both levels.

All defences will be under the pump with the new rules and I guess we have to give Monty time to work the magic I hope he possesses

Some defences more than others and ours is definitely on the "more" side.

I fear for Howard's future in the current environment.

Also the surface was ridiculously spongy. Both sides struggled to bounce the ball. Several times a player tried to bounce and the ball just didn't come back to them.

Scott even mentioned it in the presser.

I like how Howard had literally one poor game under 6-6-6 rules on a 40 degree day and now our board is all 'spud delist'.

Amon for the Brownlow. ;)

Seriously though he was good today. Made good position and his kicking was reliable.

Great to see Boak and Rockliff fire, and the strong intent from SPP. Butters is exactly the type we've been missing, and I can barely remember front and centre crumbing goals in recent seasons -- we've come to expect our smalls to be competing for that mark against an outnumber, not bouncing on the contest made by the tall forward.

I think we got a glimpse of our two ruck system. Seems Lycett plays a fairly defensive role for most of the quarter, then we unleash Ryder for short bursts, mostly teamed with Robbie, given full licence to go extremely aggressive with the taps.

Not too worried about the defence in JLT2, but it's something we need to keep working on. 6-6-6 is going to make a huge difference to the backline, but all teams are needing to readjust to this. At least early in the season, I think we're going to see bursts like North's run of 6 quick(ish) goals in the first quarter, where one team gets a run on out of the centre and scores before the congestion can arrive. If you take a step back and look at all teams across the JLT, nobody is really sure how to restructure their defence at the moment and we're no different. Our defenders do need to focus on one-on-one training more though. After almost entire careers playing as a team defence with an extra back there most of the time, this is no surprise.

Geez Ross, for a moment I thought you were trying to tell us Paul Roos was coaching South Adelaide. ;)

I'm a big Doogie fan, but he didn't bounce back vs South too well either.

Duursma made a mistake that cost a goal and his career is already over. That's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Two of the most disliked players on this board had good games today - Rocky and Amon, especially Rocky. And I’m amongst those that have dished out the criticisms.

Still not convinced about Amon. Would like to see more repeat performances like that. But right now he’s in my Rd 1 team

I guess that’s why I temper my critisism It really is an easy path to single out and Critisize.

Overall a very enjoyable game to watch, with lots of positives. Looking forward to the replay to watch a bit more closely.

50 metre rule doesn’t seem to make sense. Everyone will be giving up 100 metre penalties until the afl changes back to what it was before. Very confusing.
