I believe our defence is set for the next 5-8 years minimum. So many options and can match up on anybody. Least of issues.

Target now should be more mids and a key forward or two

Yes and No, we need at least x1 more mid.small rebounding defender.

Simpson - is 33+ so the end is nigh
Doc - star
Byrne - possible very good player / star but off a knee
Sheehan - 26 and has only played a few games and has missed a lot of football
Bucks - jury still out on him in a big way

I am struggling to think of anyone else

I get that Bolts wants Weitering to settle in down back before regularly playing him forward, but what happens if he kicks 1-2 goals a quarter every time they throw him forward.

I'd imagine pretty quickly he would be playing forward full time.

The other thing that might fast track Weitering playing forward is the development of Macreadie. If he comes on in leaps and bounds then something will have to give. Even Soapy wouldn't play 5 talls in the the backline, surely.
As a key defender Weitering is still very raw. Gets by on a tonne of talent but he does get caught ball watching & loses track of opponents.

I don't think we'd be upsetting any great amount of development by sending him forward. Will become a gun whichever end of the ground he ends up

In my opinion our list is severely unbalanced. We have far too many tall defenders on our list now. We currently have Jaksch, Rowe, Macreadie, Silvagni, Weitering, Marchbank. Thats 6 key defenders or KPP. Include players like Gorringe, Phillips, Mackay, Casboult, Jones, Korcheck and Kreuzer.

Thats 13 players on our list that are KPP. Compare that with the Dogs or Swans? Our midfield is severely depleted. We only have Murphy, Gibbs, Petrevski Seton, Curnow, Cripps, Fisher, Graham, Cunningham, Palmer perhaps Kerridge thats only 9/10 players on our entire list. We will most likely delist Graham, Kerridge, Palmer at years end and Murphy will be pushing 30.

We recruited Marchbank, macreadie and Silvagni in the last draft.
Have we gone overboard in recruiting defenders? Our midfield severely lacks depth and quality.
Midfielders should be an urgent priority.
The thinking behind it might be that many of the young talls we have will play at both ends, and that a rebuild needs to preference key position players first as they are generally both harder to find and take longer to contribute to a high level. It's how I would go about rebuilding a list anyway.

Pickett is your man.
180 cm,
Excellent Mark
Great reader of play .
Elite pace
Terrific vision .
Great disposal
Can push forward To kick goals.

I know people have him penciled in up forward and mid but he can offer you plenty down back.

Williamson is a tall HBF
Simmo will probably have 3-4 years left
Marchbank & Macreadie look more like flankers to me
Gibbs may slot back there over time if he stays
Pickett could be a better version of Yarran
Lamb I would still like to see trialled there
Smedts played there on the weekend and was solid

this is on top of fitting Weitering Plowman Rowe Byrne Sheehan Buckley Docherty, maybe Jaksch & G-Mac. That's 17 to fit into our back 6. Heaps of options and the least of our worries.

PS What's the chances of SPS playing HB in 2017 as he develops?

Yeah the backline is not a problem but a strength and A. Silvagni will help accelerate development.
Our major concern is the forward line, lacking nous, system and scoring ability, we need to kick goals to win.
Hope Jaksch pushes his way into the team his lack of game time and development is a real concern.

None if those names, in addition to what I already mentioned, are even remotely likely to be a LT quality HBF

Simpson likely to have 3-4 years? Maybe but LIKELY is a stretch surely

Probably the most likely of the lot but until he gets put there it's all speculation , cause as you said he's played Fwd thus far granted that might be due to limited prep

I'm surprised the need to find a small defender would be so controversial. Going forward there's really only Docherty and Byrne.
Yeah it's definitely a structural issue going into the future, and I think you'll see us start to make inroads at this draft. Cuningham is a smokey for a role in the longer term.

Taking out A.Silvagni and White, currently the side has Plowman, Marchbank, Weitering, Rowe, Macreadie, C.Curnow, McKay, Casboult and J.Silvagni lined up for round 1.

Given that in the past Jaksch totally lacked anything of AFL quality other than the ability to kick the ball long (if he managed to get it), what exactly elevates him to, let alone separates him from that pack.

He has to show more than one game given his arse is already on fire.

Kreuzer?

I don't know if Pickett has ever played a defensive role??
For me we need a true lock down defender for smalls. I think Doc could do it but also think it is wasting him. We will have plenty of rebound with hopefully Doc, Bryne, Marchbank, Weitering ect so we could do with a Pure shutdown player

Not sure there are pure lock down defenders other than gorilla tamers.

I think we're missing a trick not playing KJ along with Cas and McKay. This would mean teams need to play 3 talls down back and also provides multiple options coming out of defence, can have cas and KJ pushing up to the wings. I don't know what KJ has done but obviously he has been set targets that he hasn't met. IMO he's 22yrs old he's a tall and always take longer to develop and he hasn't had a fair crack at it since arriving with illness and injury. I'm a KJ fan he has a junior highlight reel that would rival any star and hopefully he can reach those heights.
Its not unusual for a high draft pick not to reach the required input...the give away is he has not shown one excellect performance the entire time here or GWS....just average or missing....look at watson or some of the stuff we have passed by the past 10 years,a mountain of potential....SOS got us !!

haha.

I don't see how anyone can say macreadie has shown more than jaksch.

Don't see why we would bring in A Silvagni when we have so many defenders already with their hands up. I wasnt too pleased we picked him up instead of a rookie ruck in the first place. Just struggling to make sense of the selections
Alex is a solid payer, thats why....he would be depth at least..

True but a Nick Smith type, even Morris. It just seems like a waste having to play someone as good as Doc on a Betts, Cyril ect because we have noone capable of containing them. It'll just take too much out of his game.

I'm not sure it works that way anymore. If you're under 6'1" these days and playing back of the centre square you need wheels and be able to know what your role is.

One outs are a rarity.

Really pumped for this game. If we get a beating, I wont be able to sugar coat it anymore. My personal respect is tied up in this club and we have been shit for a long time now.

Please, pretty please, put in a good performance...Freo are shit!

Why will we win...well, cause it's the vibe!
