I can agree Pickett would be a great 2017-18 option for HB due to this printing his forward play down the track. It'll be highly useful for him to follow around a betts, Greene, Rioli, Menzel (Geelong) and Cameron (Charlie) as he willlearnso much of what they do and attempt to replicate in years to come. We really don't have a mature experience small forward for him to learn off at training.

Seriously we have holes on every line. A shut down back pocket should of been a priority. Opposition teams will take doc or Simpson to the square and we will lose there rebound from defense. Who will play on the Betts type now?
We have gone very tall in our drafting and the game appears to be evolving into a more running handball type game.

I believe our defence is set for the next 5-8 years minimum. So many options and can match up on anybody. Least of our issues

Agree.....and as long as they can keep the opposition to under 5 goals 3 behinds we are going to be competitive in most games !!

I'm not sure it works that way anymore. If you're under 6'1" these days and playing back of the centre square you need wheels and be able to know what your role is.

One outs are a rarity.
I'll bet my bottom dollar if we play Simpson and Buckley in the same backline this year they will get plenty of one outs.

Also we won't let Simpson get taken to the square because he will get murdered so it'll be Doc who will have to take them and he is way too good of a player to be doing that

i agree, hopefully buckley can finally come on and play that role. his pace and agility would help him accel in this role. he just has the stop watching the ball.

i think simon white could do this role, gets pinned down as a 3rd tall. but think luke brown from the crows, very good shutdown player for both smalls and medium forwards. i think white could do this as well, will get beaten now and then but thats why we build a team defense and not let favourable matchups expose us.

Smedts and Byrne both play as medium defenders. Smedts had a few classy moments last week that I didn't notice until watching the replay. Could play an important role.

It's a shame Charlie and SPS aren't able to play tonight. They'll add a lot to our shallow midfield this year, keen to see them.

In my opinion our list is severely unbalanced. We have far too many tall defenders on our list now. We currently have Jaksch, Rowe, Macreadie, Silvagni, Weitering, Marchbank. Thats 6 key defenders or KPP. Include players like Gorringe, Phillips, Mackay, Casboult, Jones, Korcheck and Kreuzer.

Thats 13 players on our list that are KPP. Compare that with the Dogs or Swans? Our midfield is severely depleted. We only have Murphy, Gibbs, Petrevski Seton, Curnow, Cripps, Fisher, Graham, Cunningham, Palmer perhaps Kerridge thats only 9/10 players on our entire list. We will most likely delist Graham, Kerridge, Palmer at years end and Murphy will be pushing 30.

We recruited Marchbank, macreadie and Silvagni in the last draft.
Have we gone overboard in recruiting defenders? Our midfield severely lacks depth and quality.
Midfielders should be an urgent priority.

Of course our list is unbalanced. We are in year 2 of our rebuild. The whole notion of a rebuild is that a whole new team is developed. Good players now are traded for the longer term benefit of the new team. We are not looking for a balanced list now. We are looking for a balanced list in 2019 and beyond.

In a rebuild it is accepted wisdom that, because talls take longer, you start with KPP. Rightly or wrongly this is the path we have taken. That is why our list is unbalanced with extra talls. As we approach maturity in our list surplus talls will be traded (hopefully) or cut (as with Jones, Gorringe, White, Jaksch, ASOS).

Williamson is a tall HBF
Simmo will probably have 3-4 years left
Marchbank & Macreadie look more like flankers to me
Gibbs may slot back there over time if he stays
Pickett could be a better version of Yarran
Lamb I would still like to see trialled there
Smedts played there on the weekend and was solid

this is on top of fitting Weitering Plowman Rowe Byrne Sheehan Buckley Docherty, maybe Jaksch & G-Mac. That's 17 to fit into our back 6. Heaps of options and the least of our worries.

PS What's the chances of SPS playing HB in 2017 as he develops?
Very true observations....Pickett very different style though to Yarran..Yarran the running half back,Pickett the explosive forward..SPS could be a better version than Yarran,SPS also runs with the ball and weaves through opponents, plus his leadershi

Yes our list has been terrible for a long time...and we are full of holes on every line as we speak without depth.
Reset was overdue and will take time...just to mainly set patterns of hard training and solid drafting..then we get to avoid being a bottom team for the next ten years like a st kilda or melbourne in the past...
Alex Silvagni is a Carlton local, who will contribute in defense...another good pick up by SOS and he will help us a lot.a tough customer.
I think we get within 20 points of Freo or challenge them....it has been a difficult task for Bolts to gel the new line up in the preseason and doesnt have them firing yet.a few cogs will slip into place and we will find who and what works for us.
Palmer should be good for us tonight and all season.
A.Silvagni is an excellent strong, experienced defender who would easily match Simon White in defence.
Smedts could find some match form into the season.
Pickett could find form and accumulate goals....and do it very quickly.

Small defenders don't play one out. It's a team defence. Send your small forward to the square and kick it long, we'll have several defenders converge by the time the ball gets there.

On building the list, for small defenders we've got two proven quality players for the long term. None for tall forwards, none for small forwards, none in the ruck, one in the midfield.
Building small defender depth can wait.

Le Bois covers the ground and kicks beautifully reminding me very much of Bennell.....beautiful fottballer, speed, tank, skills, really enjoyable to watch ...hope to hear much more of Le Bois and hopefully he can break into the 22 at some stage..

He's been pegged as a small forward, but his Under 18 highlights show great skills around the ground and he's a really nice kick. Also seems to have pretty decent awareness in-close.
