North had a young team but were playing like they had a point to prove. In many respects, I think this was their final and they played cohesively.
Pity you spoilt such a great summarisation with this comment

Hartung is very disappointing. So much talent but just doesn't seem to have the fire in the belly to take the next step.
I see the opposite. Little talent. Too one dimensional. Has no strings to his bow basically.

My 2 cents... with a JLT grain of salt

Mitchell will get better.. scary

O'mera was is awesome

Vickery, as I said after JLT 1 will be huge in our next premiership.
He looks like he was always supposed to be at Hawthorn... all be it a bit late

Roughy proved in a practice match that he is still one of the best & most natural footballers in the competition anywhere on the field

Gibbo was better, just. Rd 1 will tell the story

Gunston needs to support Shoey along CHF & run his opponent up the ground as a quasi wing/mid

Hartung is still doing Hartung things that have cost him games/finals... fingers crossed

Stratts looked non committal again with a couple of good moments

Shiels looked solid until a bus ran him over...

Stewart is staking a claim

Breust will hit rd1 running

Burton was a bit frustrating for me today. He did some good things but I have a bigger expectation of influence on a game from him. He will be fine H&A

Hodge is getting minutes. He looks in ripping nick

Rioli a full time mid??? I hope he does

Shoey had moments & some decent competition from the Roos. Lock CHF, needs Gunner or Rough to assist him

Miles will beat out Doc for the small defender

Hardwick looked slow to me & won't get more than 1-2 senior games this year

Langford is so close... still not quite there. While in with O'mera & Mitchell he created space for them if he didn't get his hands on it. Follow up pressure in congestion is a bonus for him. Disappointed he didn't have much of a game forward. Mild concussion will do that

Sicily... I will go in to bat for him today .
I am not convinced but optimistic to say the least. He needs full time babysitting from Gibbo & be strapped to a chair watching Lake footage of when, how to spoil & mark. I think this will work. I loved his looong kick in with a bit of breeze behind him! More JLT3

Chip was fine. He needs support!
Brand has to play this year! If he doesn't we will be dominated in our defensive 50 in the air... yes marks & goals.

Lovell has massive thighs! I expect him to push for selection mid year

Doc is not relevant for me this year.
He hit his ceiling early in his career & will not improve. I am sticking to my guns here... not best 22

Fitzy is our back up ruck/CHB/Ruck defender. I think we know what we will get from Fitzy offensively, I want to see Fitzy the marking defender

Heatherly is not a KPD & there are way to many footballers that are ahead of him. I hope he has a great season at BH & gets rewarded with a senior game or two but I dont see him hanging around for 2018

Pitto...o_O wow...
I was very wrong.
I was hopeful of a Brodie Grundy type break out. Not this year

Thought Burton looked happy to be a cameo player today. Needs to want to influence the game more.
Billy can't find his own football, needs to be given it. Looked dejected with his own inability by the end, did he really peak in his first year?
Not sure what the Sicily bashers were watching.

Stewart looks to be the only newish 'home grown/drafted' player looking to demand inclusion in the 2017 team. Give it to him.
Gunston has lost the desire to dominate up forward, doesn't lead hard at this time, weird turn around from mid way through last season when he was killing it.

Hawks are throwing every ingredient up in the air and seeing what tastes good.
Will be a really interesting year.

Would love to know why we recruit mid sized fwds then try change them to half back flankers sicily, burton and now hardwick . I am all for players being flexible but Surely when they are so early in there development amd trying to find there feet in the afl they play where they are most comfortable .
Also i would love for us to go for a cheap tall defender and ruckman when they are are available for a packet of chips such as a henry shade or witts , if frawley goes down we are are screwed down back .
A contributing factor is that for the past 5+ years we have finished at the top end of the ladder. So of course it's often slim pickings on quality key position players. That's my theory anyway.

Interesting reading others thoughts.

Looking forward to sitting down and watching the replay.

Worth remembering that we never really lit up the NAB cup in 13, 14 and 15, where we lost to teams like Gold Coast, Collingwood and Brisbane....so hold off on making too much of what you've seen and writing off players.

Not worried about result with plenty of quality to come in, and plenty of shifting around of positions. Am worried about how easily we were opened up with overlap run through the middle on multiple occasions. Also worried about our poor structure/ball use when going forward. We weren't running with number which left us kicking long to an outnumbered forward far too often.

Definitely looked a key defender short, and to be honest I don't see any particularly exciting options who weren't playing. Brand I guess.

Also frustrated by how many clubs pick up a second or third or fourth ruck for nothing who would frankly give our best ruck a run for their money.

Plenty to like too. O'Meara incredible, Mitchell very good too for his first hit out. Even with our rucks these two plus Roughead will win us plenty of clearances. Vickery doing what is needed of him. Really liked Burton at both ends of the ground.

Remember that we we had both our number one and number two (Ceglar and BB) out today. It'll be a challenge this year with no Ceglar. If BB doesn't play we'll be in trouble.

Vickery's cat does not like your advice toward moderation.

Looked for a little more from Burton, needed to hold his line behind the ball a few times.

Sicily has a lot to work with in defence, could be best option as kick out too.

Feels like their could be a fair amount of reliance on Mitchell and Omeara, as they seem our stand out best mids, which says a little something about our recruiting them. And also why we need elite versatility from Rioli, Bruest etc.

Not sure if fair to compare.....but....

If S.Mitchell and J.Lewis played in place of T.Mitchell and J.O'Meara today, I dare say they wouldn't have played a whole lot better. The 2 different combo's wouldn't have been too dissimilar.
I believe S.Mitch/Lewis may have been a little more effective but only marginally. And.....we have T.Mitch/O'Meara for many, many, more years.

Exciting times ahead.

*Gibson looks embarrassingly bad, fingers crossed he is just coasting through the JLT

*Our defence as a collective was terrible, Frawley/Gibson way off it and Heatherly is not close to being a league level defender

I think this may be part of the reason we are trying Sicily down back? Although he's not tall enough to play as a key position defender. But he did play tall on a few occasions today (and short on that dirty rat L.Thomas). Lord knows we have enough small-medium defenders - Birchall, Stratton, Duryea, Burgoyne, Whitecross, Hodge, Miles, ???....

Burton possibly a better option? I always thought Brand, but who knows what's happening with him at the moment.

Great summation mate, I agree with most!

On Gibbo, I feel like he was shocking today. He looked like a 1st year rookie, like a deer in headlights almost. We desperately need composure and leadership in defence, today Gibbo showed none of that.

I'm with you on Heatherly, I'm 100% supportive of KB playing and agree he is a big big key to what we do this year.

What was your take on our transition D? It was really off today, we just blead for long period of times.

There is 1 true and right fix for what our defence needs and it's KB. I know KB is still learning his craft, he does miss read the drop of the ball and has been found out in his body positioning but the positives far out weigh the negatives.

He is 6ft6, almost 200cm, he is a pure athlete, he uses the ball well by foot, he has courage and has the body frame to play on the big super tall forwards (Daniher/Lynch/Wright/Daw/Jenkins etc).

agr
Today showed just how important and underrated Puopolo is when fit and firing.

agree 100% in our 18 in any line...

would u keep pop fwd ? for the maniac pressure or even toy with the idea of throw him back where it all started..
only suggest this due to our lack of small running defenders

obviously birchall n burgoyne will fix this but i see burgers playing alot more up field with hodge playing primilary as defender.

Way too much over analysis for a pre-season game, but most of all On Burton, Pittonet, Timmy O, and our second and third year players in general. Comments of expecting these kids to 'take it too the next level' and to bust games open are premature. At the end of the day they are still 19-22 yr old kids. Like any job at that age It takes a while to find your feet and execute your job with confidence. Temper expectations for a smoother ride.

You're right but the difference is that Mitchell and Lewis were part of a midfield that played together for many years, and knew everything about each other, strengths, weaknesses, the lot. Their interaction with other players was instant, based on years of knowledge.

O'Meara and Tom Mitchell have been thrown in and will take time to meld.

I think it will take half a season before the midfield really hits their straps.

He has strong competition from Hartung and Duryea for mine.

Both very poor.

Also thought Burton was better back than forward, still not convinced on Siss as a key defender

Good move yo have these two playing these roles in the JLT. I believe Sis more suited to fwd and Burton to back but some good learning opportunities for both to help learn the roles a little more.

Good post BLH. I think people forget this is the first time we have had the two playing together which would mean there was a lot of experimenting going on. I thought we missed Langers, as early he was the one breaking from the ball ups, which I think the coaches would rather see Jaeger doing. Maybe we will see BB, and Burger in there helping.

Early days; the best is yet to come.

Agree with your post. But I think they'll hit those straps much earlier.
