But ultimately it comes down to Joe's decision. If he chooses Essendon, he sits out the West Sydney 17yo selection and enters the next years draft and goes father son for whatever pick we have to give up.

If Joe wants to play for Essendon, and Essendon want Joe bad enough, we get him.

I think the only way another club can get them which is out of our control is if we aren't able to commit to him before the 4 17 year olds are chosen by the clubs who traded with GWs

Don't worry about Sheedy he has Buckley's chance of getting him... And to clarify, Collingwood has no chance.

All these questions about how this works have been established already in the thread. Read this if you are unsure:

Both Sydney and Essendon are eligible to take him under the father son rule.

Joe Daniher's choices will be to play for Essendon, play for Sydney or to go in to the draft.

If he chooses to play for Essendon, then we get to pick him up with our next pick after another club nominates they will take him if available in the 2012 draft. So Carlton says they want him first round pick 12, we get to take him with our next pick (be that first or second round), but if someone else, let's say GWS, says we'll take him with pick 1 (assuming they finish last in their inaugural year), we have to use our first pick.

GWS cannot pick him up this year as one of their 12 17 year olds, because he is still 16. The complication to the matter is this. GWS gets 4 picks to players who turn 17 in the first 4 months of next year available to them in the 2011 draft. GWS however, cannot use those picks, they can only trade them to another club for established players. So essentially 4 clubs will have exclusive picks of a group of 17 year olds (of which Daniher is included) in the 2011 draft.

We can prevent this happening if we nominate that we are taking him as a father son pick in the 2012 draft, prior to the 2011 draft, so long as he agrees.

For Sheedy to pick him up like he is saying he wants to, Joe has to decline offers from us and Sydney and nominate to go in the draft, then not be picked up as 1 of 4 17 year old picks in the 2011 draft, then GWS can get him in the 2012 draft if they finish low enough in their inaugural year... Not very likely if he is so highly touted.

Hi Guy's,
Sorry for intruding but for anyone who is interested - I watched Joe play for Aberfeldie in the EDFL under 16 DIV 1 semi final yesterday. He was awesome. They will be playing the winner of Keilor and Douta Stars in the Grand Final in 2 weeks time..pretty sure it's at Windy Hill.. - Just a heads up for those of you who may be interested in getting down for a look.

He also has the choice to go to the Swans. Hopefully DD can get some games and cement a spot in the team, you would think that would increase the attraction of playing for Essendon... What's the story with DD at the moment?

Two of my young brothers in law are good friends with the Danihers and he has told them he wants to play for us!!!:thumbsu:

Guys, we shouldn't get too excited, hes still very young. Friend of mine who played Vic Metro said that he wasn't that great...

Nah...i choose to get excited. I doubt many people think he will dominate from day 1, but after another year developing in the Tac, then further development in the afl system with essendon, he could be anything.

Everything I've read suggests J Daniher & Jedd Clothier (NSW scholarship, available 2013), we have two good talents coming through; ie are rated - right now - in the top handful of talents for their age groups in the country.
We could end up with two very, very good kids for below the odds.

Anyone know the scholarship works? I know we have another couple in NSW i think. Does it mean we have exclusive rights to them or something???

And whats happening with David Meli...are we meant to international rookie him this year??

10. Where in Australia may my son end up if he plays AFL?
The scholarship program encompasses all sixteen AFL clubs. Currently, nine clubs are situated in Melbourne, one in Geelong, two in each of Adelaide and Perth and one club exists in both Brisbane and Sydney. The short answer is that your son, if scholarship listed, may play with one of the sixteen teams located across these six locations.

Under the scholarship program your sponsor club has the explicit right to have first choice, once your son has met age eligibility requirements, to primary list or rookie list your son and, as such, if selected, your son would be required to go to the sponsor club, if he wished to play in the AFL competition.

If the sponsor club does not exercise the right to primary list or rookie list your son prior to the national or rookie draft, your son may wish to nominate for the national draft system in the same way as all other players. In the AFL, the National Draft system is the regulated process by which players are allocated to clubs on a sequential selection basis determined in priority order from the lowest finishing side to the highest.

The club that selects your son, under this system, would then have the right to contract your son for his playing services on the standard terms and conditions that are in place at that time. Currently all first year AFL players are provided with a minimum two year contract with minimum base payments of $39,300 together with $2,200 per senior match and up to $6,000 in additional bonuses based on games played in first year.

So we can take them both under the NSW scholarship scheme? Don't we have to take him under the F/S rule. Do we get first dibs on him under the scholarship scheme?
