News John Barker joins Carlton

Your example reminds me of the fact that Judd has kicked some ripping goals from set shots from 50 metres out or on the boundary line. Odd since he is usually a pretty poor shot for goal from a set shot.

To be honest, forward coach is a load of bullshit, wasn't Libber the forward coach a few years ago??

As basic as it sounds, for our 30 shots on goal a game, if we kick straighter, Barker ends up Einstein.

I dont like it being implied that I know nothing about how a coaches role is supposed to work at clubs and by an attempted subtle extension that I am an idiot.

Yes, Barker is supposed to be working on structures and the game plan, but he is also supposed to be working with the players to get them to fit in that game plan and if he sees a player struggling with their development, he is also supposed to work with that player on his issues to get the best out of that player.

I also see Barker as being the one to help write up the training schedules for the players to help the development staff work on things to help with the structures and the game plan.

If he is only working on the structures and game plan and not working with the players to improve their abilities to play to the structures and game plans, then he isnt doing his job properly.

Brown gets a lot of credit for improving the skills of our defence and he also gets the blame when our defence falls down. So why is Barker so immune to similar criticism?

As an aside, I've seen footage of Sir Alex Ferguson talking to his individual players on the training fields, telling them how to do stuff... working with their skills to improve them as players. If he can do it, why is Barker excused from doing similar stuff?

I saw Malthouse earlier this year do exactly the same thing with Armfield's set shots at goal. At that particular session he was quite hands on with a few of the younger players as well. As Harks implied it is hard to say exactly what the coaches roles actually entail.

You constantly see picks of Malthouse having a word with the players working on their skill levels at training. If the head coach can do it, why cant the assistants.

Ohh thats right... Barker only works on structures and the game plan.

Coaches role is not concrete, they are all responsible for the development of the players and all will have some input into all areas, it's just that some are dedicated to be more focused on particular areas and have a responsibility to manage those areas and the players involved. Any coaches doing a poor job will be outed come seasons end and this goes for coaches only doing the bare minimum.

Barker was terrible at Hawthorn and the Saints before that. Both teams' forward lines immediately functioned better once he left.

Expect yours will too.
But there are Carlton supporters who are content with leaving Barker alone and blaming the development coaches for the drop off in skill level of our tall forwards... a couple of young talls who were kicking loads at junior level and are failing at senior level.

Perhaps you should just kick the dog instead of blaming Barker.

You're ignoring the fact that the forwards are struggling for quality amd quick delivery from half back and the midfield. The midfield is arguably the biggest reason for your perception that our talls have dropped off. Our midfield has dropped off the face of the earth. Idiots will blame the small forwards for not being mids, yet it's actually our first tier mids who are struggling to find the ball and ease the load on the forwards.

This is so true. Watching the game today I was left wondering what's heppened to our midfield and in particular its pace and spread.

We've gone from one of the quickest sides in the league to one of the slowest in the space of about 12 months.

You're doing a good enough job of that yourself.

You obviously have no idea about the roles of coaches these days by the incorrect statements you continually make. No matter how many times you post the same drivel it will not make it true.

Thought you might enjoy these.

With the assistance of the club’s Development & Academy Manager Darren Harris, with whom Walker has spent the best part of an hour’s work on a weekly basis for months, the 110-game player has been chipping away “to get the repetition of kicking for goal right”.

“As soon as I knew the forward line was going to be my go I hit ‘Harro’ (Harris) up straight away,” said Walker, currently equal 9th on the AFL’s goalkicking list with the return of 15.6 from seven matches at 71.4 per cent.

“I got onto it pretty early and from then on I’ve been trying to get 15 shots on goal every day. It doesn’t sound like many, but when you’ve managed 10-15 every day until now you get your rhythm right.

“I’ve compared film footage of how I’m kicking now with how I used to kick and it’s completely different. I’ve basically restructured everything - how long I walk for and how long I run for in my run-up, how I settle myself before I kick the ball, and even how I make contact.”

I have done a fair bit of work with our Goalkicking and Development Coach Darren Harris and am more confident with both goals on the run and set shots.

Last year I spent a lot of time working with Matty Lappin and David Teague, and this year I have spent a lot more time with (Assistant Coach) Brett Montgomery and (Development and Kicking Coach) Darren Harris. Aaron Joseph and I have been doing a lot of work on defensive side of our game, and I’ve been improving my kicking with Darren Harris. I always do 10 or 15 kicks after training and will only keep improving from here.

We make that nine straight goals for this year - a magnificent effort. Tell us about how you've straightened up your goal-kicking.

Thanks, it is nine straight. I’ve worked on it with our development coaches. Darren Harris has worked on a routine with me, but my work with the coaches has really to been to kick more goals full stop. Yes accuracy is very important and we have worked on that but a lot of work has also gone into working my way into positions where I can kick more goals. And that’s the same for a number of players, in particular midfielders.

and for what they do with the line coaches

We obviously work on our own set up and the oppositions set ups throughout the week with Mark Riley our midfield coach. So we are pretty much across all likely midfield opponents.

If you ever sober up and stop ranting you might see that no one is defending Barker for any criticisms that he is directly responsible for, people are just pulling you up for making things up and then expecting it to become fact.

Fine... I'll just follow the party line... John Barker is an awesome coach who deserves to be named coach of the year because all our forwards kick 10 goals plus every week because of his fantastic structures and training towards getting the game plan absolutely perfect.

You obviously know everything about coaching and can walk into Micks or any of our other coaches job without a problem. So I am just going to bow to your superior wisdom.

Hows that? Am I doing it right for you now?

Forward line, midfield and defence is all looking bad at the moment, More concerned with the ease some of the goals we give up. After we levelled the score late in the third, How the Dogs were allowed to march half the field into their forward line and score in the final seconds was pathetic. Also saw a centre clearance (where we should have been setup) a bulldogs player skied the ball to half forward.. Addison came up from the forward line without a Carlton player anywhere near him, had time to stand and wait for the ball.. I think half the problem at the moment for the Defence and the Forward line is the midfield has too many players out of form. Bring in Graham and Bell and try to win the trench battle first.
