Re: Jonathon Griffin leaving Adelaide.

Apparently wants to go home cause his grandfather just had a heart attack and his Dad has been diagnosed wth cancer.

If that's the case, and he wants to be with family in such a tough time, then good for him. Family is more important than football in the wider scheme of things.

That being said, not for Griffin's case (as the above indicates serious circumstances, which any human would feel sympathy for), but AFL footballers in general - what's with the big "go home factor"? If you're travelling and training for AFL football, how much time are you going to get to hang out with your parents and old high school buddies anyway? Surely it's not that hard to keep in touch with family and friends from the other side of the country. Even if you're desperate to see them, from Perth to Melbourne, it's only a 6 hour flight, isn't it? If you want to live "at home" and be around your old mates and family and still play footy, give your AFL spot to someone who wants it and play in the state league. You're a professional athlete. It takes some sacrifices. Make those sacrifices or make way for someone who will.

Now on Griffin's football ability specifically - He's now had 6 seasons on an AFL list, without establishing himself even as a genuine #2 ruckman. He's still probably about 5kg underweight, hasn't improved significantly since his last decent run of games in the side (2008), and is still battling it out with James Sellar (who wasn't even recruited as a ruckman) for the #2 ruck spot at the Crows, and might not even be getting a look-in if Brad Moran was fit. Everyone being fit and healthy, he's not worthy of getting a game ahead of the top two ruckmen at Fremantle (Aaron Sandilands, Kepler Bradley) or West Coast (Dean Cox, Nick Naitanui), so he'd be playing WAFL footy in next year. If that makes him happy (and with his family situation, it might), then so be it, but I don't think he should have any pretensions about playing regular AFL footy for a WA club in 2011.

Well maybe if he pulled his finger out and played well he might be worth trading for.

Maybe after 6 years in the system, it's time for people to realise he's just never going to be that good. After all, he was only a rookie draft selection back in 2004, so it's not like he's a first round pick who hasn't lived up to some enormous pre-draft potential and hype. Sure, he was a project that had some potential, but I think he's been given long enough to fulfill whatever promise there was. Considering he can't even establish himself as a backup ruckman for the Crows, I think it's safe to say he's not up to AFL standard.
