Past Jordan "I don’t think Sydney fans should be nervous at all" Dawson: Grand Theft Completed, traded 2021 to Adelaide

With Tippett we offered you the best offer we could. There was no future picks to trade and it wasn't out fault that the draft was compromised by the expansion teams.

We tried to push out Jesse White who, while no world beater, was a solid fwd/ruck. But he didn't want to go to Adelaide.
Sorry it was said in jest 👍

Not looking to upset anyone, and a serious question.
Did you think Dawson was going to be as good as he is now? At Sydney he was a half back flanker, who had one very good season, and he was targeted by Adelaide to fill that exact position.
So for me, I actually thought a good half back flanker was his ceiling, and thought the trade was about right.
I didn't think it was overs, and was quite surprised by how pissed the Swans were about only getting a mid to late first rounder. In no world was he worth a top 10 pick on his exposed form.

However, in hindsight he has well.and truly excelled what he was, and went past just been a flanker, turning into an AA, club B&F and captain.

Did you guys honestly think he was always going to be what he has turned out to be?
I didn't.
He'd moved to the wing a fair bit for us. Still played off half back sometimes. Could also play half forward.

Gun everywhere. Didn't see you playing him as a mid, but have had to given other options. Also didn't see him as a Captain, but again, lack of options.

An absolute robbery at the time and worse in hindsight.

Was offered the captains gig at Crows as a enticement.

Liked rounding up lost dogs in Robe.

Is a bit of arrogant prick IRL.

2 of 3 of these things are true

Yes, we're very familiar with the idea that Crows fans didn't really have a clue about him at the time of the trade.

Swans fans were pissed because it was as clear as day how good he would be.

Yes. We all knew. You screwed us.

We all knew he was very good, but I think he’s probably marginally outperformed expectations since joining the Crows.

The fact remains: the Swans were absolutely fisted & those who’ve forgiven Dawson (particularly for the “nothing to worry about” crap) are in the minority.

Nothing to forgive re: "nothing to worry about" which was a few months before he left. No evidence he lied to us, could have been a change of mind over a difficult period.

But I didn't need a reason to loathe the Crows, been doing that since childhood.

At the time of the trade I think it was fairly unlikely he would play in the middle for us but he was verging on AA HBF/Wing. So worth close to what Gulden, Josh Daicos, Sinclair or Whitfield would be. Not quite, but getting close.

We knew how good he was. Adelaide knew how good he was.

You could have offered a fair deal, but instead chose to leverage the PSD and rip us off.

I don't blame Adelaide for doing it, but enough with the gaslighting.
Hindsight says it was unders, but at the time I think it was what everyone outside of Sydney, including neutrals, thought was about right.
The pick we gave you drafted Josh Weddle.

People, even so-called experts, outside the club, don't know about our players?

I'm shocked to be hearing this.

Supporters always see the potential in their players, more so than others.
Take Charlie Cameron, we lost him in contract for pick 12, which again in hindsight was well unders. I was on BF saying how he exploded in the preliminary final, was a big game player, with elite speed, defensive pressure and can kick goals. There was no kid in the draft at pick 12 that had anything like his skills as a small forward.
However, everyone else said it was slight overs.

Yes, the Crows have been plundered over the years.

You just had an opportunity to do the same, with the go home factor and the threat of the PSD, and you took it.

Seems to have turned around now, you're getting players back home or for more opportunity.

I was at that game. When the rest of your team gave up he kept going. Thought at the time he would be a gun. IIRC he was playing on the wing though. Didn't have a huge body of work behind him. Probably a late second rounder as well as 12 would have been right. As would pick 4 for Dawson plus a 4th.

I think one thing Sydney does well is talent id.
We had Max Michaelanny as a FS, and he was expected to be bid one around the late 2nd round, but Sydney bid on him at 17.
Some people accused Sydney of bidding on him to get some revenge over Dawson, to which Sydney replied saying they absolutely wanted him with that pick and hoped Adelaide didn't match, as they really rated him.
Turns out he was absolutely as good as Sydney thought and well worth pick 17.

With a good proportion of our recent 1st round picks currently playing VFL for North Melbourne, I reckon some Swans fans would beg to differ.

King on SEN yesterday morning made a dig about the fact that if we'd played Dawson in the middle more he may have stayed. I'm not quite sure that was the driving factor in him leaving, and any suggestion we weren't using him correctly is quite mad.

Any media was completely IRT the whole Swans/Dawson situation has been, and continues to be, wrong.

But hey, what would the supporter base know...

Not a factor.

He was playing on the wing as well, we were hardly giving him a thankless, hidden away role.

Crows didn't even play him in the middle immediately. I recall checking and he was initially at HB again. So I'm not even sure they intended him to be a main mid.

It's frustrating as he's just the sort of big body who would have fared well in the 22 GF.

He was drafted by us in 2015 & he'll be 28 in a few weeks
It's thus far been very rewarding for the Crows on field since they took Dawson with the improvement he has given them.
Before Dawson was at Adelaide the Crows finished a pathetic 15th on the ladder.
Once he arrived, Dawson has elevated the Crows to 14th in 2022, 10th in 2023 & 15th in 2024.

Without him we have made 2 GFs in those 3 years.

Are you suggesting we wouldn't be better off with him or the Crows wouldn't be worse without him?

I think it's less of a case that nobody outside of Sydney knew and more of a case that the crows had a larger media presence than the swans. All I remember is us in the Bigfooty swans board SCREAMING that Dawson was a top 10 pick very, very loudly, but the SA media deliberately played him down and influenced Victorian media. Swans had (and have) little to no media influence in Sydney due to the rugby thing, so we were cherry ripe to be exploited.

The pity was that we were building a style around Dawson and his kicking out from defence where he would spot up players on angles and over the back of the zone. When we lost him we had to go back to the drawing-board with our game plan.

Having said that, as has been mentioned, we still made 2 GFs without him, however the sting is that he might have made a substantial difference to the outcome. We will never know.

My guilty secret is that I still love to watch him play but I hate that it's for another team.
