Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

As pissed as I was at our game style last night, too early to make a call on JL.

He may well address the areas we were poor in between now and round 1.

But I was really in his corner until last night, but seeing the same deficiencies as last year is very concerning. I’m now in the camp of finals or out.
Yeah I think I'm at the same point mate.

At this point I wouldn't be overly fussed if we did let him go, my biggest frustration is we can wail and gnash our teeth over J Lo, but who do we replace him with?

Last year it was never his fault, this year the knives will be out.
He’d better get a backbone or angry and show some emotion.
That conservative thinking or style of play is why he is under the pump.
Ross was a good coach with a list developed, JLo is a good development
coach. We need someone who can do both.
It should be finals or bust, that’s a fair assessment.

Other clubs have several coaches in the box that are former leaders of an
AFL club.
They know what it takes, and how to implement several gameplans, for and
against, Not just focus on what they are doing.
Or they have assistants who will maybe coach outright one day.
Our club has a history of just doing enough, to win a flag it’s all or nothing.

Who was the last assistant coach at the club to go on to senior coach at AFL level? Reckon it was Chris Scott under Harvey.

That was 14 years ago.

You both make good points and I was just thinking maybe there's an assistant out there somewhere who could do the job.

I think we are at a push to win stage now so if we decide to let J Lo go now, we probably need a proven coach who can come straight in and get it done.

Kinda feels like the Harvey/Lyon situation, which I'm not sure we really want a repeat of.

What worries me is the post game presser last night where he said the structure is a work in progress and probably be bedded down a few weeks into the season…? Wtf. We didn’t play finals, you have had 5 years to get it right.

**** him off

I was waiting to play a real team to see what we've got.
Not much, but we do have a lot out.
Amiss & Jackson are just about our most important players.
God, Brayshaw is a shadow of that bloke two years ago.
Wait until round 6 after the Derby, if we are 3 and 3. No problem

Maybe we need the other JL?
It seems that Dean Cox is so highly regarded he will take over at Sydney.
Coxy must be pretty astute as he ruled himself out at WC😜
Regardless it couldn’t hurt to even have a head of coaching, AFL royalty
guidance in our corner.

I don’t think it needs to be an experienced coach to replace JL if that’s what happens. Those that have coached before and aren’t doing so now aren’t for a reason imo. Of the coaches that have senior jobs currently anyone I’d be interested in would be nearly impossible to get.

Every single successful coach for generations was an assistant coach at some time prior to becoming a senior coach. There have been far less successful second time coaches.

If it isn’t working it isn’t working and JL will need to go. Who we are replacing him with isn’t a consideration until JL is gone.

Yes, but the only way that happens is if we have a marquee coach. Nobody of note is going to move to WA to lower themselves to be an underling to a minnow. We are only going to get the dregs as assistants with Longmuir in charge.

Take for example Buckley, someone who gets brought up in this thread. He is an alpha male. He would rate himself miles above Longmuir. He'd never work under him.

And if we have an assistant who was a lowly name at the time of getting the job ... but showed themselves to be good ... they will leave at the first opportunity for a bigger gig. Scott really was the one who got away, and despite what people are hoping, we are never getting him back.

The only thing I'd query here is the idea that we shouldn't replace the coach as it effectively forces us to start again, and sets us back.

I've got the following as recent appointments (completed years in the job); Voss (2), Mcrae (2), Brad Scott (1), Kingsley (1), Mitchell (2), RTB (1). Clarko ignore given his 1st year, Hardwick, Yze.

I'm not sure how many of those clubs have been set back significantly by making the change. Maybe none?

It will be more of the same this year with JLO in charge. Get rid of him ASAP and move on with a better style of play. Signing him up again would be a disaster.

Such vociferous executioners!!! Please remember west coast beat port this time last year.

Personally I think we are sitting pretty, give the man a chance to grow with this young team over the year and sign him or dont, based on the wealth of information we will recieve over the next 8 months.

Also after 30 years of supporting this club and all the resultant introspection, I'm quite happy to wait for a flag without the Machiavellian HR moves.

The media has the public frantically mouthing for the teet, wailling for their weekly dose of tepid formula, I'd rather our club not throw ourselves so willingly upon those spittle encrusted lips.

P.S Do y'all really start texting other people at every bump in the relationship? Or do you just like watching other people do it?

I think Rhino is a good journo. I think this article makes the best possible case for retaining JLo. I wouldn't sign him yet though. I think it's good for everyone to have everythong on the line in 2024, make or break. It's not like 5 years isn't long enough to produce the goods on field. If in 2024 we look like we did in 2023 then we have already seen JLo's ceiling and it is not going to take us to a premiership.

So much depends if we can get close to our best 22 on the park in the early rounds. As we saw last night we have zero depth in any area except the midfield & we have no true wingers which is the worst problem.

If we trot out last nights team we will go 0-5. I’m still in shock with how utterly awful Sturt & Treacy were when playing without Amiss & Jackson.

Doesn’t help I’m watching Adelaide - Tex, Fogarty, Rankine, Rachelle.

If I’m coaching I have Simpson from Rd 1. We are so desperate for clean & classy players I’m fast tracking him.

Two weeks from rd 1 and we’ve clearly reverted back to early last year game plan.

Not gonna work ladies and gents.

Agree 100%. If we start this season by reverting back to our early 2023 form we are in for a tough year and are no chance to play finals.

My biggest fear is that we lose games early with a slow and stodgy game style and then are forced to adopt a more attacking game style once we find ourselves behind on the win/loss ledger.

It's very difficult to play catch up in today's AFL competition.
