Dermott ("dont touch the hair") Brereton.
Offering priceless advice to JL straight out of the BIFFO Book of Coaching.
No thanks Derm, youre being wise to stick to talking chit on the tv.
Coaching takes a special kind of courage and Danielle Laidley knows a lot about courage.
JL was always a quiet courageous player and clearly its deep in his character.
Love his leadership.
Fanboi? Yup.

btw I havent minded Derms ingame insights in the past, but havent seen him at work for a while.

Was watching some early era footy highlight reels this morning and saw an awesome spear tackle laid by JL to a running winger and earnt the free. He had lots of great moments for us.

In regards J-Lo, I haven't always been his biggest fan - finding him sterile sounding at times, his pressers almost stultifying to listen to. But one thing that impresses me is his no nonsense style or manner, his clear articulation. He doesn't try to obfuscate things.

Back when Ross was supposed to guide the team through a rebuild and we had the "budding boobs" scandal mixed with problems with Bennell and then later Hogan it did feel like the 'culture' was all at sea and the club was getting hammered on the pitch, especially when injuries mounted (not entirely Ross's fault, but you look at St.Kilda currently...) in 2018/2019. Sometimes you just have a certain 'presence' or aura, good or bad, rightly or wrongly...

Something needed to give and the club sought out a guy that was in many ways cut from the same cloth as ole Rossy Boy (a defensive tactician), but in terms of personality couldn't be further removed. A more "family friendly" rendition! No real danger of controversy or going off the beaten path so to speak, a masquerade of whimsical personality to paper over the cracks. I immediately realise this makes Longmuir sound a dull, diluted person but I don't think J-Lo is all that - I think he's ok with playing subtle cloak & dagger with the press and in some respects like Jackson, just gives nothing to very little away. Bland, but straight forward answers and talk - nothing fancy, whereas Ross was caught up in his ego a bit - still wise-cracking along to paper over the cracks when things were turning to sh*t.

Justin may at times get things tactically wrong, we saw a fair bit of that with stifled ball movement and too defensive an approach last year, but the club did acknowledge we might take steps back to go forward and it feels like that's what's happening now. Most of the dynamic of the team is there, and it looks bloody hungry and determined to me. J-Lo may be 'fixated' with the contest, but if you get that right and become dominate at either clearances, centre and stoppages, you start getting teams on the back foot very quickly like we saw against Brissy when the tide turned that 2nd quarter. Freo just mauled them in the contest and their midfielders weren't liking it! Very physically hardened and capable, Young gets lauded for his laser left boot but didn't realise just how tough he is in there, he can be a wrecking ball at times! That's one thing that stands out - fitness, strength and then the ability to pull the trigger! These are the characteristics necessary (amongst other things, obviously) to push the Dockers or advance them along. Then you factor in personnel like Cox and Darcy and Chapman and you realise this isn't even the exact 'Best 22' out there! It's pretty bloody impressive and much of it is coming from J-Lo, the team has bought in.....and I think it wants a piece of the action...right now!

Good on him. He has his knockers (not budding boobs?!), but he's staunch, clear and concise in what he's doing and wants to do. Plus, if we win a flag in the foreseeable future I want to see a presser with him, Tabs and Jacko for the lols!! It would be comedy gold :tearsofjoy:

Welcome back! I've been wondering where you've been.

Ahh thanx bro, I had a bit of a bad episode or 2 last year that resulted in me deleting my account in a fit of rage. Something I instantly regretted (should learn to grow up a bit...!). It just happened to coincide with Freo being bad and I think I just threw my toys out the cot so to speak. If I could rewind time......

Thankfully things have super-improved, my "mental well being" is a lot better and I'm just generally a lot happier. And that weirdly coincides with Freo being better lol!! I am clearly the key (I jest) :tearsofjoy:

Hope you're doing well bud and enjoying season 2024 to date. Hopefully me coming back doesn't jinx things

What do we think of the slow starts and subsequent comeback to blow teams off the park?

I’m honestly at a loss as to how to classify them. Tactical genius or not getting enough out of players at the start? It’s such a long history of it now back to 2022 and that final. Is he changing things up, moving tactics like a football savant or is it mainly Merrimans fitness coming through?

The Shinboner did a bit of look into JL changing positional depth against North but that’s a one-off. I’d love for a deep dive into it because it should be a pretty interesting topic. Sadly we’ll never get that level of effort in AFL media

Yes could be psychological reasons. Just not switched on properly. Brisbane game is different as we played well in 1st qtr except for the 50m penalties and rushed behind for free kick. 2 goals that shouldnt have occured.

North melbourne was definatly a SLOW START. but it seemed a lot of unforced errors werent helping us.

Adelaide again a different game in that Longmuir wanted the boys to be defence focused as last year the Adelaide crows were one of the highest scorers in games. So i think they did that and wore down Adelaide until they could break free and score themselves. But again lots of unforced errors. kicks missing targets. handballs to the ground instead of to players. Skill errors from players who are better than that, so i think it is in the HEAD.

But a deep dive by some expert into the games would be interesting

As people have pointed out Brisbane wasn't a slow start we just got unlucky with free kicks. North Melbourne tried a blitzkrieg which we weren't prepared for. Adelaide we definitely evened up at the end of the first. Idk I feel like we need a bigger sample size before saying slow starts are an issue. I also think JLo is a bit reactive instead of proactive which is probably why we haven't won a first quarter.

Well we don’t hit the ground kicking 8 or 9 goals in a row, we definitely start reserved if not slow. It’s very interesting it’s happened as much as it has

The good thing, regardless of our starts, is we used to be a team that you could tell what was going to happen for the rest of the match in the first five minutes.

That's not the case anymore.

We seem to have developed a level of maturity where we are able to assess, then reassess how the game is going and respond accordingly. Whether that's the players, or the coaching group or both, I'm not sure.

I think I'd take that over quick starts each time.

Reckon he's bloody good at oppo analysis.
He has his work cut out for him this w/end.
Reckon he'll have a gameplay that can help us win, but its obviously up to the players to follow the directions

I'm adamant it's a pre match issue. The plan can't possibly be to start every game so passively.

I think teams saw what happened last year when we were consistently blown off the park in the first quarter and are trying to end it in the first round.

I think we’re playing a bit of rope a dope as we always adjust to get it back on our terms & finish strong.

As JL said I’d rather be behind at Q time & win the game than the alternative.

I love JL getting snarky

People are too worried about coaches showing personality in the media that they forget the important part is having the trust and word of the players that they're going to go out there every single week and put their bodies on the line for the team, it's clear to me that the players are playing for Longmuir.

I don't care how charismatic Longmuir is in the media, that's not his job, his job is to be a coach, I highly doubt who he is in front of the media is who he is in front of the players.

You are right. My bro thinks JLo purposely waits out the first qtr to get a feel of the opposition before enacting a gameplan to counter them. That would explain our starts this year. The problem with this approach is it can go completely wrong (see the North game). Carlton is definitely not the team to do this against.

What I wouldn't give for some actual expert deep dive analysis in the media. Not that Kingy fingernail deep ****** shit either.

JL should probably watch oppo games the previous week then, or maybe do it in the first 5 mins because my heart can only take so much!

Well it can’t be tactical so it’s either a fitness or mental thing, with the money being for the latter.

I think the more wins we can string together, the likelier the slow starts will naturally fade away as our overall confidence and belief grows, but oddly it is becoming our brand / style if you think back to rolling big names and games like Geelong in Geelong and ending Melbourne’s big string of wins.

It’s not all bad, as any team we are playing will be more than aware that $hits about to get real soon enough!!
