Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

No AFL coach is going to come out and say what Clark did was a good idea. As understandable as it was, it cost us the opportunity to try and kick another goal in the last minute. Clark needs to own it and grow from it.

Think JL was pretty measured about it in the presser tbh.
if it is true about what really happened, then his comments were premature

He could have said "the umpires were bad all day" and supported his team

He could have said "no comment" or "I don't really know what happened", but he threw Jordy under the bus.

Umpires can do what they like and are not accountable in a sport where a lot of $$$s are involved.

The sad thing that probably made the free kick for dieesent given, was Jordan Clark clearly walking towards umpire and then the umpire blew whistle

If Jordan was abusing himself he should have walked in any other direction apart from towards the umpire.

He said. She said. contest and with no witnesses likely to come foreward it will remain a mystery, But next time Jordy. WALK the OTHER WAY

I was at the game.

There is an ironic thing here. This was our only game of the year we actually started well but still lost.

I can see a repeat vs port. Start well or have a strong 1st half vs port Adelaide then struggle in the 2nd half and lose

I can see both sides of the argument. J-Lo, someone who I respect coach wise, but not exactly a fan of otherwise, is too nice to come out and ruffle feathers of the AFL variety. That's a given, and why maybe Fremantle - the club, saw him as a safe option after the debacles of Ross Lyon in those latter years, particularly the budding boobs scandal amid a so-called 'rebuild' and the spiralling loss of memberships etc. He just isn't 'controversial', in any manner.

However, in saying that - he's right, the matter should have been put to bed before that and the biggest focus now should be how do we shut down games to avoid this kind of scenario for the future. I would have liked some strong backing of Jordan though, vocally and vehemently standing up for your players and showing a bit of anger at even the way the umps 'controlled' that last few mins even if it means copping a fine for "AFL criticism" (heaven forbid!). This galvanises your playing group to the hills. It shows you're willing to fight in their corner on their behalf as a coach, as a leader. Not to hark back, ironically - but I reckon Ross would have done it. I could see John Longmire doing it too, maybe Hardwick.

That's probably the most disappointing thing for me in the aftermath. J-Lo, the man is too nicely-nice and corporate-friendly.

I actually think it's good that JL hasn't got caught up in all the drama. Focus on next week and get the 4 points there, let the higher ups sort out any issues with the AFL directly. The last thing we want is for us to lose focus and get belted this week because our coach was too busy arguing with the AFL

I was never on the JLo train (was a RTB fan). I think he is a good tactician, but he needs more grunt.

Looks like he has put out his neck more for the boys since he has heard their defence

I am going to the game but not looking forward to a likely loss vs Port.

Saying that, 3 wins and 2 losses after 5 games isn't the worst record in the world.

I seriously was fearing going 0-5.

But our 3 wins.

Brisbane.... I thought it was the eagles of 1991 or eagles of 2005. Lost a grand final, then get motivated the next season and make the grand final again and won. Brisbane has gone backwards.

North Melbourne: I never underestimate them. They beat us round 2 last season. North mids of Sheezel, LDU and Tom Powell are solid. Had a good 1st half but Freo fought back in the 2nd.

Crows: I seriously thought they were gonna finish 5th to 8th. Yeah their older players aged 30 or over were very good in 2023.

Crazy Freo kicked 9.15.69 to crows 4.10.34. Walker, Rachele and Rankine held goal less.

They simply had no good talls in form to kick to. Walker was sore. Riley Tilthorpe is 200 cm forward ruck but injured.

Saying that..... I know i am gonna get ahead of myself.

I really do hope Freo not only makes finals but won one too.

I would like to see our next finals win, hopefully this season. Then compare to our 2022 Elim final side.

Just see how many guys we turned over in 2 seasons.

In the words of a former coach "Challenge the behaviour but support the individual" is appropriate here.

Clark has a few points in the bank as he has been consistently good so far this season.

I’m enjoying our competitiveness this year, we’re doing quite well, but apart from my own perception that JL isn’t a great inspirer, his coaching/game style this year is making him look like a poor man’s Ross Lyon, yet we sacked Ross Lyon…..

Sure…I’d point out that Ross Lyon had a hall of fame ruck, a hall of fame chf, two small forwards at the peak of their powers etc when he looked good.

I mean stick Sandi, Pav, Peak Fyfe, Barlow, Ballantyne, Walters and Mayne in there. Lachie Neale as sub

Pav, Ballas and peak Walters alone wins that game for us.

We have young kids forward and Taberner who has the agility of a Clydesdale…

The comparison is asinine really

My point is we sacked RL for several reasons, but one fan fave is because he coached a boring style, yet here we are with a coach who is again coaching a “boring style”, but I have nothing against that. As long as we win and show efficiency

I just don't understand the negativity about how we're playing.

Media and BF nuffies go on about young exciting teams like North & the Hawks or the free flowing style of Essendon and The Dogs but these teams get utterly pumped when the other team gets a run on.

JL has fashioned a style for a team that is the best defensively in the comp but has the worst forward line & carries about 4-5 players who are barely WAFL standard and got us competitive against the best attacks in the comp (Carlton), the best mid group in the comp (Port) to the point where we will almost certainly play finals this year.

But some people want a forward line of a couple of 20 year old key position players, a cooked Walters & Tabs, a couple of WAFL battlers (Emmett, Banfield) and a guy who is largely invisible and can't kick goals anyway (Switta) to get into a shootout and kick huge scores against teams stacked with Coleman medalists and first round draft picks.

We're a work in progress and lacking serious talent in the forward half yet we're playing 4 quarter competitive footy against the very best sides. What more do you want?

Stick prime Walter or Ballas in this team and we are 5-0 comfortably

I am completely at ease with JL now and fully onboard. He’s doing incredible work where there is only three players with actual forward craft, and two of them are under 22 KPFs.

There is nothing any coach can do with the opportunities Banfield and Emmett fluffed today, Tabs doing Tabs things and Walters being unable to even get to contests anymore.

I’m fully invested in the JL train

Crabs, Hughes and ? Out

We’re a 2-3 goal better team - Jackson up forward, better transition out of defence, more forward half pressure and scoring power.

We’re averaging 80 a game, that would have us at 90+ I reckon which is fine.

And we had to shut down the last 2 weeks to have any chance of winning. Good coaches modify the game plan based on conditions.

That's it really, one elite small forward who kicks goals out of nowhere and we are undefeated.

The list management will have plenty of magic beans to find one. Even if it's just drafting three small/medium forwards will all three picks and best performer wins.

Our skills (at times) have been killing us this year which contributes to the game plan looking worse than it is. The decision making has improved demonstrably in the offseason but the inability to hit targets, particularly by foot, hurts.

The challenge for the coaching group is to hone our skills so that we're the team improving near the end of the year (GWS 2023/Collingwood 2022) and not the worst team in the eight (St Kilda 2023).

Turgid and boring football. No interest in trying to actually outscore a team. It's all about trying to defend a score. Works occasionally but the last two weeks it's worked against us. Last three games are 63, 63 and 69.

I call BS on that, we created plenty of opportunities, the issue again was converting into a score. I said it after the Adelaide game, everyone in the team (even the defenders) need to spend all week training shots on goal from all angles under all circumstances.

Yep. Spot on.
Errors killing us, both judgement and skill.
