Coach Justin Longmuir Pt 2

I just learnt Chris Scott is out of contract end of 2024, so I popped over to the Geelong board for a squiz...

They don't even have a thread on him!

Well maybe they do, but not on the first couple of pages.

Says a lot.

Get the job done Garlick.
You know what, even if JLo does alright this year I would be very tempted.

It’s a bit worrying that almost every team is talking about putting speed on the ball from half back & using the corridor while JL still manages to work words about defense & safety into every interview.

He’s either a genius or just very stubborn.

To be fair everyone tries to copy the style of the previous premier and the game is always changing. Time will tell, and very soon now. I can’t believe how quickly this season seems to have come around.

Problem with copying the previous premier is your always one year behind the 8-ball.

And by then those sides have already evolved themselves anyway.

Its all good to have philosophies but the greatest work as a coach is identifying the players you have and there strengths and building a gameplan around that.

Its why most premiers stand out as they have there own game plan which they execute and stands out above the rest not copying what other teams have done.

Did he though?

It seems really obvious that the money was going into signing up the host of players we re-signed last year on longer deals and acquiring Jackson.

Dropping the ball would have been matching North's offer for Logue and losing someone like Serong because the money was gone trying to keep depth players.

Imagine the melts then!

In retrospect I think the club did the right thing.

Logue had good games but he was just a bit too short for fullback or chb, and his kicking isn’t accurate enough for a roll off third tall.

I was spewing to lose him but I think it is because he seemed like a great guy and very likeable.

I think Logue counts. List management shouldn't be left to the last minute. If it is we leave ourselves open to the likes of North Melbourne. There is no doubt the club wanted to keep Logue and could have done that.

It happens too often at our club, especially with best 22 players.

The club wanted to keep him but not at any price.

He was a round peg in a square hole up forward.

Not sure he would be best 22 this year, and having such a vocal and popular member of the squad very disgruntled was a legitimate risk.

I was unhappy at the time, but am at peace now with losing Logue and wish him all the best.

Oh I agree, I'm just hoping we're not going to prove vulnerable to the play on at all costs teams. I don't think we have the talent to handle a full strength Collingwood but some signs we're learnt how to counter them would be good and I especially don't want to see us crumbling mentally like we did against North and the Dogs when they went kamikaze. If we're serious we can stop that.

Last year teams knew they could just fold back on us when we had it as it was never coming forward with any speed but it went the other way like a pinball.

Just, you know, a plan. That survives finals tempo.

There's a lot in this relevant to this thread:

It's been a week where Longmuir has been able to hand a lot of responsibility to his assistants, and it's a group he's grateful for, given their ability to collaborate well and "leave their egos at the door". As round one draws closer, however, it'll soon be time for the coach to take the reins more strongly.

"I think he is about to come into his own," Pearce says following the Friday match. "We've had different head coaches for the two teams, but we're about to get the best team together and that is his domain.

"When he speaks everybody listens and is switched on. But he has empowered a lot of other people."

Asked when Longmuir is in his element, Serong adds: "Football gameplan, the ability to see the game and different tactics. That's where he gets his energy and what he loves. He sees the game so well, so he captures the room when he's talking about that."

I found ^this interesting to read in the context of frequent suggestions that no player could ever find Longmuir's way of speaking inspiring.

It's a good article and for once not a puff piece from our own marketing team. I think it's pretty clear that JLo has the attention and respect of the players. It will all just come down to whether or not the game plan works on the day.

Wasn’t best 22 and he knew. On the phone to his manager in June/July he wanted to go.

I think Logue got 600k x 5. To match that for a guy that wasn't in our best back 7 would have been reckless.

Our first offer reported at 250k x 2 was too low. If we offered a million over 3 years he probably signs without testing the market. Belly dropped the ball there.
250k to play at Peel? Agree Belly did drop the ball. Overs for mine. What is this, a Fabian Francis handout? Logue is a bust. He did very well to con NM with his 5 year contract.

Great guy ✅
Great footballer ❌
Missing the podcast and that’s where it stops. The constant errors he made week in, week out I will not miss. Signed a huge deal to head to NM in a rebuilding phase after Freo just finished theirs which was his whole career to date. Pick 8 bust.

lol, tell us what you really think! Agree though, the problem is, the guy who pushed him out of B22 has been injured since we lost Logue. Once Chappy starts playing regularly again we’ll all be reminded why Logue left.

I for one have missed all of those frequent suggestions. Comments I've made - and also largely heard - about JLo's way of speaking have been purely directed towards gameday stuff, and even then further qualified by saying his manner suffers because it is paired with Pearce.
Of course quieter people can be motivators, unifiers and inspirational. That seems to be JLo's mode and the article you refer to showed it really well. I am really pleased that we saw JLo shine like that, especially because there are detractors who have already written him off. Large numbers of players and other inner sanctum people give an extrem, ely favourable picture of JLo's capacity. Brilliant.
But you do need a leader capable of the good old prematch revup and occasional intramatch spray when needed. I've not seen anything in Jlo that suggests to me this is a strength of his. Who then does this important role? Or do we just say slow starts and lack of on-field flair don't matter?

That's what he says but what we were doing in match sim was reportedly using the corridor moving the ball quickly.

I feel like our slow starts are more to do with whatever prematch routine is and less about any sort of inspirationaal revup.

I disagree.
Perhaps it's all in the word 'routine'.
Of course you need routine, that's about calm and focus and making sure everything is ready to go.
But you need a fire lighter.
Our 'routine' starts are the problem.
Whatever it takes - intensity, fire, emotion - that's a necessary ingredient to get 22 blokes unified and on the hammer to hit the moment hard. And it takes a special skill to hit that note week after week.
So I'm not saying routine is not important, just that JLo paired with Pearce seems to me to lack the rev-up aspect. At an elite level you need to plan to get all the ingredients right to succeed.
JLo seems to me to be someone who has 'routine' covered. Rev-up not so much.

If it was that simple then there wouldn't be half the football department. All that intensity stuff comes from the preseason and the overall culture setup from day one. Teams that are relying on inspirational words each week for that spark to get going have already lost.

He comes across as a guy who would make an excellent no2. Which he was at Collingwood. Tactically very astute.

Is he an inspiring leader? Not sure about that one.

Buckley sat in our rooms during match day and said he was surprised how quiet the group is. Jlo has definitely rubbed off on the group. Is this a good thing ? Who knows. But it’s definitely different to every other successful coach.

From leaving the rooms to starting the game is 10-15 minutes. If he ’revs’ them up before they run out any inspiration derived has truly gone by the time the siren sounds.
They spend all week together, theres other ways to unify the group. Come game time that is player driven & the added experience of playing & training together will sort that out, not the coach raising the decibels 15 minutes before the game.

It seems pointless to me to have a team captain and leadership roles, if the coach has to do all the revving up and barking...
I am on the "JL is good but a little uninspiring" side of the aisle but this is without a doubt also true. It's up to Pearce/Sonny/Serong/AB/Fyfe to gear up the players (not in a WC way) as they head into battle together. As you point out, why else make such fanfare over "leadership groups"

Jlo has definitely rubbed off on the group.
