Kevin Sheedy destroyed Essendon's list in 2007 and left it in tatters for the next coach

Dodoro and Sheedy did a superb job out of the Superdraft last year. Will set them up for years to come. The Solomon trade alone was pure genius. As was the Ted Richards trade the year before - a dud for a 1st rounder was just ridiculous (almost as good as the Birchall/Bailey trade for Hay).

Every one of Gumby, Jetta, Hislop, Houli, Davey, and Reimers will make it. That is the nucleus. Then you've got Ryder, Dempsey and Myers. The future's bright, you just gotta negotiate the early years whilst they develop.

Much like we did the last 3 years with the Buddy, Roughy and Lewis draft. Now they all have 60 games under their belt and mature bodies. It can turn around very quickly...

spot on as much as i hate it. i too am rational.

they have arguably the best under 21 talent in the comp and by a fair stretch.

david myers will be an absolute jet. pears will be a lock in chb of the highest order, gumbleton chf, ryder where ever he wants. houli, jetta, dempsey all will be top drawer.

anyone who cannot see this is seriously deluded or still scarred from their dominance in 2000.

I wouldn't go this far. There are a few lists out there with similar, if not better talent in that age group. But yeah, i would say they would be top 3...

Spot on there mate. I reckon soon or a year or two we'll be looking back and saying how luck the Bombers and (i hate to say it) Carlton were to have had 6 picks in the top 50 of the Superdraft. That draft year just looks better and better.

2006 will prove to be a very good draft for us. 07 & 05 less so, but arguably still did as well as anyone

Add to that the players a few years ahead - Watson Laycock Stanton Winders Davey Dempsey Monfries - future looks OK. Knights main concern will be managing to integrate the retirement of great players - Fletch, Mal Michael, Peverill - with the young talents in for them

Just quietly - whoever mentioned Pears? Get on it. Will be quality, was probably the missing link (a class defender)

Not saying we're heading for a premiership any time soon but if we were to field a 23 and under side then this is what we have:

B: Slattery Lee Hislop
HB: Nash Ryder Dempsey
C: Dyson Watson Myers
HF: Davey Gumbleton Houli
FF: Jetta Neagle Monfries
R: Laycok Stanton Winderlich
Int from: Reimers, Lonergan, Hocking, Pears, Daniher, Johns

More than likely, 60-80% of these players will truly make it but what it does show is that after the older guys are gone there is some talent to build on.

We have a pretty good talented list of youngsters but its their lack of bulk all round, thick muscle, that will prevent them from competing equally against the likes of Geelong and beating them at their best.

Thats not to say our young blokes could be very quick and run top sides off their feet.

Our tackling count in these NAB cup games has gone through the roof, but to tackle the likes of Paul Chapman you have have a bit of bigness about you. And you have to be spot on with your disposals and be able to handle the heavy pressure as sides like Geelong do.

We most probably won't win a flag this year but don't be surprised if we are playing in finals in Sept.

If you have watched F-all of Essendon games lately and know F-all about our list, start watching and look out for the highlighted players above..Essendon players who will explode this year..

It seems that people have gone off topic.
In answer to the question at the end of the original post, would Patrick Smith be the writer of the article that made those wrong claims?

What's with the communal love fest going on here?
Have Essendon missed the finals that many years in a row that people are feeling sorry for them, or at the very least are prepared to discuss them rationally and honestly?
That would be a real shame.

How's unlisted going to go this year?

As was widely talked about last year, Kevin Sheedy's last years as coach of Essendon, and particularly his last year of 2007, exposed the selfishness of former coach Kevin Sheedy.

Looking for short-term fixes to save his job, Sheedy decimated Essendon's list, and its future prospects through poor recruiting and short-term solutions to fill holes.

The mess Kevin Sheedy has left in his wake will be apparent for all to see this year as new coach Matthew Knights picks through the wreckage of a team completely reliant on a couple of few ageing stars in Captain Matthew Lloyd, inconsistent forward Scott Lucas and lanky defender Dustin Fletcher and struggles to make his team competitive.

The rebuilding done at other clubs over this time, Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Carlton foremost among them, will contrast sharply this year with Essendon as Knights struggles to avoid the Wooden Spoon. Becoming the coach of Essendon at such a period will indeed turn out to be something of a poisoned chalice for the young Knights as the full horrors of Sheedy's last few years at Essendon are exposed.

What do you guys think? Can anyone work out which journalist penned this a few months back?

Well, I think you should go to Lagoon Park in Port Melbourne and talk to this guy who takes two Dalmations for exercise each day. His dogs have attacked other dogs there, and I believe he is a psychiatrist and he's also nuts.

You four would make a great team of experts.

Amazing how much effect 2 NAB games can have on the mood of BigFooty. Essendon have gone from having the worst youth to one of the best. Knights has gone from a dud coach to a good one. And while 3 weeks ago they were a bottom 4 certainty, now they are a finals contender.

I'm certainly not going to speculate about finals this year; we were heading that way last year until Alwyn Davey broke his arm, then Jimmy was hurt a couple of minutes later, then Sheedy got told he wasn't going to be re-signed. All this did hurt the team's morale.

But the commentators did say (and I agree here) that the Bombers are playing a different game, putting themselves on the line and backing each other up last week. One of the players (Scotty, I think) did comment that they are playing a different style of game now.

The most important controlling factor which will affect any/all teams this year will be how they can escape from injury. Injury is the key this year.

spot on, THE post of this thread, good to see an 'outsider' understanding of essendon

& anyone really surprised why sheeds had to basically be dragged kicking & screaming out of the joint? he knew what was coming...

You have to admire Essendon.

They have never really bottomed out and at their lows they have usually been competitive.

Now without much help from priority picks and AFL handouts, they have managed to get a good young list going again that looks to be progressing well.
