King/Gardiner Traded to the Saints

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

Mate, you don't need draft picks to upgrade rookies - you simply add them to the list.

Whichever way you look at it, picks 62 and 90 are dead set useless. In fact, the only thing we achieved was helping out the three players by getting them to clubs they presumably wanted to go to, and helping out those two clubs by getting them players they might otherwise have missed out on had they been left to the PSD. No benefit whatsoever for the club.

No but you need space on your list - we needed to have at least 5 spaces. 62 and 90 are deadset useless as you say - we will be unlikely to use more than 3 picks. It's an ordinary draft anyway.

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

hopefully geelong fans can be as vocally disappointed with losing Kingy for nothing as Melb fans were when there club lost Johnstone for something decent.

God I hope Kingy dominates Blake next yr and is the single reason why we lose, idiotic getting rid of him after we stuck by him from 03-06 when he rarely played, yet he managed to string 3 months of football together and play well at the end of this season... hey its logical to get rid of him now!

abssolutely 100% correct stoney!
could NOT agree with u more!!!
shattered that king is gone, so i hope he DOMINATES

good work stoney, uve got team chemistry's full backing on this one!!!

Team Chemistry, disenchanted, and out:eek:

Re: shit trade

Let's be honest here,the4 players between them played a total of 9-10 games in the seniors this year. We have young players with huge potential that need game time.
Players such as Hawkins, West,Djeerkura,Prismall,Gamble and Davenport.
Gardiner,Playfair and Callen were on everybodys de-list list. King was not going to get game time once Blake re-signed and would of inhibited West's progress.
We will now draft for the future and promote Lonners and Davenport and possibly Grima who all have great talent and potential.
The club has done the right thing for all the players. There are still some hard decisions to be made. Spencer and S,Hunt,Owen and D.Johnson look like there gone also.

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

Did anyone hear King on SEN? I missedit, I tuned in later to hear some call back and one caller getting stuck into King suggesting he came across very arrogant and that King had a crack at the cats. If that is the case, see my last entry on the poor treatment of excaptains. It is an area we have never managed well.

I hope it is not true.

That bloke was full of shit Kingy had nothing but prasie for GFC and said, he had a feeling he wouldnt be there next year and didnt let it get in the way of any partying with the boys. that bloke who rang up can **** off GFC did kingy a fav and now he dosnt have to wait around a month to find out were hes going.

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

If King hadn't been traded he would have been "retired". Charlie Gardner would have been delisted.

The fact they got any draft pick at all for them is more a token effort on the Cat's part to get King (and maybe Gardner) to a club they wouldn't mind going to.

Make no mistake, regardless of any trade both players would not have been on the Cat's list next year because of salary cap restraints.

The future is not with King and the devolpment of Blake (and West) should continue. Blake will become a very good footballer, and think of his hunger after missing this years GF. Charlie is never going to make it at Geelong, and IMO was lucky to still be list this year.

Re: shit trade

They were both gone anyway.

King and Charlie both had clubs that were interested in them and a club they were interested in going to. Rather than be pricks and let them wait until the PSD, we were professional and helped our boys to the club they wanted.

Pick 90 is a token, we wont use it. But we helped 2 players who have given a lot to this club go to the club of their choice rather than leave it open for a few months and let them run the risk in the PSD.

Classy work by the club!!

King I agree with, he has served Geelong very well, and is a well-respected player! Gardiner on the other hand is a different story. Geelong owe him nothing! I understand we needed to free up roster space on our list, but to off-load these guys for pick 90 (which wont be used) is a little puzzling? Why didn't they try to inprove their last live pick at 44 with some kind of deal?

Classy work by the club I dont think so!!!

I know how we ended up with Pick 90

Who thinks that maybe, just maybe...stkilda did give us a good selection for king...a 2nd or 3rd round pick, for example, and geelong then made it a prerequisate that in order to recruit King, they must draft charlie as well?

StKilda, thinking they know charlies value then submitted a revised offer. Geelong, knowing Charlies true value, gratefully accepted... and that is how we ended up with their pick 90.

Nah....your alright charlie

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

I listened to Kingy in his media wrap. He actually mentioned in the conversation that the club sorting things out was the least they could do after 13years. Come on Kingy you played in two Grand finals and got a premiership medallion that could have gone to Blakey. The club could not match the money King wanted so they have done the second best thing and given him a chance elsewhere. I think he should be grateful for what the club has given him of 13 years and it was his decision not to retire not the clubs.
Gardiner will welcome the new challenge and seeing they both live in Melbourne now that should suit too.

Re: King and Gardiner gone

Although sad to see Kingy go i think it's the right decision by the cats, just like it was the right move SHORT term in bringing him into the grand final side for Blake and now LONG term it's the right decision in moving on with kingy.

The sticking point about this whole trade was getting pick 90 for him in return, ideally it would've been better if we got something lower but thats the way it goes.

I don't think the club could've played russian roulette with king next yr regardless of his grand final effort, thats why long term it was the right move because of the uncertainty of the big guy's body.

From what i heard on SEN king sounded like he had a uncalled for pot shot at the cats but he should just move on graciously and be thankful for the cats in what he has acheived.
Now how much pressure will be on Blake, i just hope he puts his head down & arse up and work his butt off because as we all know there is plenty for blake to improve on and he'll have to make sure he does it in the next six months.

Re: shit trade

Its called clearing cap space to sign players who have a legitimate long term future with the club. King and Gardiner would have been merely bit players in 2008.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I understand why we let them go. But Pick 90? Maybe for Gardiner, but King is worth a top 20-30 pick at least. We should have blackmailed St. Kilda to give us a higher pick, or send King into the pre-season draft, where Richmond has first pick and would nab him (They've expressed interest, and it would cover them not get Kruzer), meaning that if we lost, St. Kilda would too.

You have to be fierce with these clubs. They will screw you over. We should have taken the offer for pick 90 as the insult that it is , and tell St. Kilda to shove it sideways. We would then threaten to negotiate with other interested clubs and get the best deal. If St. Kilda wanted King enough, they would have to sacrifice a bit, and come back to us with a good offer.

King is a AFL and VFL ruckman, an ex-All-Australian ruck and former captain. We owe him more than to trade him for a crap pick. Even Stephen Wells, who got Matthew Egan at 60 in the draft, won't be able to get anything decent from pick 90.

Getting pick 90 is no better than getting nothing for him in the pre-season draft. It may be a nice gesture. But nice guys finish last. You need to be ruthless in trade week, and not accept crap from anybody.

St. Kilda, enjoy Steven King for two years. But that's two years of knowing that you did us wrong. We won't just get pick 90. We will get our payment out of your blood on the football field, when you see us win another flag, while your "team of champions" continues to fail under the weight of expectations.

Re: Oh Charlie & King...

Exactly, we panicked and gave up King and Gardiner for NOTHING! We could have at least got something for KING alone at other clubs

would have gotten nothing anyway if they went in PSD. Now we can move on.

Thanks KingY

..I couldnt give a Toss that we trade kingy and a few other Hacks cause WE WON the PREMIERSHIP! The Rest is waffle

Cant wait to see the Saints chew up and spit out more "been around the block boys"

Forget King - he was on one leg for the last two years

Re: King and Gardiner gone

Really? What did he say?

Massive clear out though. Hopefully it actually does create space in the cap.

Whilst I agree with your thoughts 'Budda' I question just how much space it did actually free up? King certainly wouldnt have been on a substantial amount of coin IMO, and as for Playfair, Callan and Gardiner, all 3 were VFL players that rarely played senior football.

Callan only played a handfull of games in his time and except for Playfairs odd game this seaon the others were never really seen. Couldnt have been on much money then surely?

Re: shit trade

To be honest as a St Kilda supporter I was expecting a trade of King for our 3rd round pick (40?). When I heard we got him for pick 90 and Gardiner I was very surprised. Dont really want gardiner but we do need a quality back up ruckman. Surprised by this whole week though and some of the trades that happened, eg our other trade of pick 26 for Schenider + Dempster,

Re: shit trade

If King didnt get traded he would have got delisted and nominated for the PSD, its a simple matter of salary cap. Better to get at least somethinging for him, although pick 90 for 1 good and 1 ok player is ridiculous.

Re: I know how we ended up with Pick 90

Nah, King is worth that no matter which players he's bundled with.
If you're right and we took a lower pick just so we could offload Charlie we would have been better delisting him.

Edit: Just read it again, right, silly joke... Charlie isn't that bad, but it will be funny to watch ST KILDA try and rely on him.

Correct...very silly joke, although in charlies defence.......

Well going back a couple of years (before Ottens), King was the highest paid player on the list. So I'd suggest even though he may have gone down a bit in his last contract, he would've been on a tidy sum.

Gardiner and Hank would free up at least 100k each, Callan maybe a bit lower.

You'd have to suggest that with all those four gone, would free up at least 350-400k. Probably more if King was on 200k, which wouldn't surprise me at all.

What are you sniffing? Kingy's been one of the top earners at the Cats for the last five-six years. He'd be top ten for sure.

Best of luck to Kingy. He's been a good servant to the club and the fact that he was able to battle back from so many injuries and snare a premiership medallion is testament to his determination. It's a shame we couldn't get a better deal for it, but the fact that we've saddled St.Kilda with Gardiner definitely softens the blow.
