There was some interest in a previous thread about my top 40 from 2010-2013. Bolded are those 2013 prospects (including last years minidraft selections).

This order could and likely would change from week to week if I were to update it (who would seriously have had Tom Nicholls even in this draft order 10 weeks ago?) but at this point in time is hopefully sufficient enough to start some discussion.

Interested to here why you rate Macrae so highly Knightmare?

Macrae does some special things. It's not only that rare ability to create time and space and make everyone around him look silly with ball in hand but that sheer rate of improvement that makes me think he'll take his game just about as far as anyone.

He's an exceptionally coachable guy who is and seems like he will continue to get the absolute best out of himself and I'm expecting him to really develop an inside game once he puts some further size on his frame. If he can do that and clean up his footskills he'll be a star because of that rare time he has in traffic which is freakish to near Pendlebury levels.

Can't wait to see how Aish goes. I think he's capable of having an o'meara type first year

I wouldn't go that far. Aish isn't that same contested ball winner so he won't take over games as O'Meara has but he has the ability none the less to be an exceptional footballer does young Aish given everything he has achieved so quickly and at such a young age.

O'Meara's first year is as good as any midfielder we've seen - probably better even than Chris Judd's first year which is what all year players seem to get measured against with O'Meara the more polished of the two with his footskills the more damaging.
So I wouldn't be comparing any young midfielder to O'Meara. It's just not a fair comparison/expectation. And I'd include Jack Martin in on that one who Gold Coast continue to call better than O'Meara.

Interesting considering all the hype from the dogs seemed to be centered around Stringer. I haven't seen enough of him to really comment but he stood out as someone who isn't talked up as much as others on your list.

Stringer has received the greater hype because the Dogs have needed a key forward more than another midfielder and by key forward standards he's having an excellent first season with stats almost in line with what Jack Darling had back in his first year so there is a good reason why they are excited about Stringer.

Macrae has also been excellent though. In his past 6 games he has had 22+ disposals so while he may not have been spoken about much yet, he's someone who I think soon will get spoken about more as one of the absolute premier players to come out of last years draft.

Apparently Martin had another awesome game yesterday against the Swans reserves. Can't wait to see him play in the AFL, ridiculous talent.

Knightmare Interesting list. Can you explain Scharenberg V Bontempelli. In your 2013 draft Scharenberg is consider an A grade where Bontempelli is just blow that Potential high level etc.

Tom Nicholls at 4 Wow.

I'll be updating my draft order and add another round of profiles if I get the chance next week but Bontempelli has moved into my outright second position in my power rankings. Tall, athletic midfielder who is developing rapidly. He went off for 28 disposals, 6 marks, 7 tackles last weekend through the midfield. These talls guys always take longer to develop and as a guy who is still growing and has a late year birthday I feel his ceiling is the highest in this years draft.

Scharenberg I just haven't seen played through the midfield and projects more as a high level back flanker at this point whereas Bontempelli now while I wasn't sure early season projects as an elite midfielder.

What made you shoot up Tom Nicholls to number four? Sure he has been good the last few weeks, but number four good??

Nicholls wins you games unconventionally in an almost Nic Naitanui style. He's not the same dominant tap ruckman - in fact he has lost most hitout battles and he's not yet even a massive marking or goalkicking threat just yet but I rate him because like Naitanui he is a rare contested ball winner - this even more than winning the hitout to advantage differential is the way a ruckman can most heavily influence games and help his his midfield. Additionally his tackling game is the best of any ruckman in the competition with the best tackle per game numbers the highest in the competition. That combination of contested ball and tackling from him I feel has as strong a correlation between winning games of footy and winning the midfield battle as any other indicators in a ruckman and this is why Nicholls has really impressed me.

In addition to this in young ruckmen I look for rapid development - this is usually the best indicator of how far they can take their development. Nicholls in my view is the most improved player in the competition with the way he has improved his tap work, tackling game and ability to cover ground and I fully expect him to develop into the second best ruckman in the competition - behind Naitanui.

Interesting that you think the Giants only have one of the top 25 best kids. That has to be some sort of indictment of the job done by their drafting personnel.

I'm sure it's something that will change next year as guys come through. A Greene, Treloar and Shiel could break out or a Patton could get healthy and really take over.

Gold Coast had that transformation year this year with Nicholls, McKenzie, Prestia, Dixon, R.Thompson and M.Shaw really come into their own along with the introduction of O'Meara and GWS have a similar opportunity over the next couple of years to have a number of their young guys really come on in a big way.

Seems like Gold Coast have done really well over the past few years KM. A bit of a testament to Scott Clayton I think. We're lucky to have him.

Also very lucky to have that minidraft and be in the best position to capitalise on it as well as have such a great group of prelisted and zone players available, but none the less Clayton has done an excellent job capitalising on the opportunities available to him, I absolutely agree.

If Scott Clayton is a smart man he'll also make a big run at young Tom Boyd. He has a stack of future first round selections at his disposal as well as young, surplus assets which could appeal - Gorringe comes to mind as a 1st round selection who would be the 4th ruckman on the list behind Nicholls, Dixon and Z.Smith. So he has a real opportunity again to rob GWS of one of the best talents in the country if he wants to enough.

Macraes been floating under the radar a little bit. His average stats are right up there with the best mids of this draft and he does the odd brilliant thing on the field that no one on our list could pull off but him.

He seemingly has a big upside because of all the other mids this year that are killing it he's clearly the most underdeveloped body wise but still keeping up with them.

All things going well he could be a seriously good player with his vision and ability to evade and make the right decisions.

Cant fault your logic...unfortunetly. I was hoping MB would slip thru to SW's pick , to me he scream the stuff he likes.
I think Sharenberg is better than HBF but again it where he is atm. Still , if any club get a HBF as good as him I doubt they will complain

It must reach a stage where GWS have an awakening... It GC they they will be competing against. Omera , Martin and Boyd.
Sounds like cutting your nose of to get a new pair of glasses.
If I was GWS I would insist on OVER's big time from them or Id look elsewhere or infact not look at all.

Not sure Gold Coast will make a play for Boyd seeming that so many other clubs are desperate for him and Gold Coast have a quite a few talls, albeit injured at the moment.

Very difficult task, Kudos. Martin vs O'Meara will be a fascinating discussion for years (if not slightly depressing for every non-expansion club).

I just don't understand Nicholls at four. The fact that he isn't winning hit ours should be evidence enough that he's not better than a Wingard or Bennell

Few will yet know about Nicholls. For those not watching Gold Coast carefully his name won't mean anything to you. He's a young ruckman but I think he'll become as good as just about any in the competition. Loses the hitouts most weeks and isn't even a major goalkicking threat or marking threat forward of centre yet.

Where Nicholls shines is in his followup work. He makes Gold Coast's midfielders so much better than they'd be with any other ruckman in there. He's the best tackling ruckman in the competition with some absolutely off the charts tackle numbers. Additionally the contested ball he wins is just incredible and while not quite Naitanui incredible he wins that next most and most meaningful contested ball. Do all that and make your ruck taps meaningful ones to advantage and I'd rate him already the second best ruckman in the competition behind Naitanui - due to the value weighting I put on ruckmen who tackle, win their own footy and the make meaningful taps to advantage. These factors do more towards helping your team win the centre clearances than any other indicators and when you have the combination of the three as only he and Naitanui have. That's a guy you want on your team and your midfielders want to play with.

Also, wasn't Houli traded from Essendon?

Preseason draft - 2010 from my understanding.

walked in acrimonious circumstances. 2010 PSD, We then picked Hibberd with the next selection.
