Would it be better to take a lightly framed player deserving of a top two pick? Or reaching for someone on needs?

You'd take the best available, unless it's a choice between a position you have a lot of and a position you don't have a lot of (provided the players are similarly rated).

KM, what's the go with Sean Tighe?

Seems a real hard-luck story in terms of being drafted. Apparently tearing it up as a mobile ruck - through necessity - in the WAFL, but was predominantly a CHB for Werribee. At 23 next year, 199cm and very mobile, and 95-odd kgs is he worth a shot for my lads? We desperately need some height with attached bulk down back after all.

For me it either him and/or Sully from Geelong, with Mitch Brown to finally come over from the Duckers.

Id prefer the Demons took Dunstan at pick 2 instead of Aish who seems very slight

we have burned so many top end picks on lightly framed players that its left a bad taste in every Demon supporters mouth

Big mistake if you do that.

Big mistake if you do that.

Remains to be seen how Dunstan develops this year; I think he could be incredibly damaging at the top level.

If we were going to take Dunstan because he's more physically ready - that would be a huge mistake.

Dunstan is the fourth best player out of SA this year. So, why would you take him at #2 overall?

Who would rate ahead of him?

Aish, obviously.

Scharenberg? Personally I think it's a bit much to use a top pick on a tall utility who struggles to play on good KPP's in juniors.

Dumont?

my brother in law goes to every Norwood game and can't speak highly enough of Aish, He thinks he will be the best South Australian since Buckley and Wanganeen.

Aish and Scharenberg are easily ahead, while Dumont is just that next step up. No idea why he isn't getting more love.

I'm sure the recruiters will give him some love - looks a footballer, not unlike a Vlaustin/Conca in being a bit underrated?

I read this morning (HUN) that all GWS draft picks are on the table for quality experienced players. Going by how hard they played dealing with the mini drafts they will not be getting a number of spuds for the NO. 1 pick. I would not be surprised to see 'no deal' and Boyd ending up at GWS. GWS evidently want a good KPD with a few games under his belt - who has a spare on of those?? Alternatively any pretty good player (willing to go to GWS) plus a swap of first round picks or other picks. At least it will create some interest in October.

Tighe is very much a hard luck story. Has been thereabouts every year since 2009 and continues every year to come back better.

Tighe showed in u18s that he could play back but has since played mostly ruck and competed supurbly.

Mitch Brown from West Coast is a good enough get, I just wouldn't pay a 1st round selection for him which he likely commands.
Better would be looking Collingwood's Jack Frost. He's played some good footy but being the 4th key defender (behind Reid/Keeffe/Brown) could be had for less than M.Brown and still be an excellent key defence option.
I'd probably make a play at Lachie Keeffe while your at it, though he won't come cheap with his form exceptional pre injury 2012 and in my view is better than N.Brown.

Have you seen much of Waterman yet? Seems to have come from nowhere and talk he's rising up the board. Obviously a father son for us. How do you rate him?

I have enjoyed watching Waterman and have been very impressed with his play through the midfield.

He's in my top 10 of next years prospects so he's one to get excited about if he keeps improving.

The only team I can see willing/able to make a deal with GWS is possibly Gold Coast with all the young assets they have - as all other clubs show a near unwavering loyalty to their high level young players.

Gold Coast have a surplus of ruckmen and with Sam Day being an early draft pick from not too long ago I could see a deal of Day and one of Nicholls or Gorringe with a trade of picks to move into that top selection.

We'd only draft him as a CHB I'd imagine. He seems to have the tank and agility for it. Has he got the body strength?

Out of contract at the end of this year, we won't be giving up a 1st rounder for him in that case I'd wager.

Massive call that, although I like the look of a 204cm agile CHB.

Keeffe has a similar style to him as Dustin Fletcher where he can look completely out of a contest and just get a fist in. I really enjoyed watching him play last year and had him pre injury in my top 5 for our B+F and that best performed KPP to that point.
He's a good one and if you get him you're laughing but I wouldn't let him go as after Reid I see him as that no.2 key defender with N.Brown probably the one I'd let go of first.

Hello Nightmare Good effort as always. I must say I am pretty excited for this draft for once. The eagles gen 2 of the 92-94 side will be kicking in the next few Years I am geniunly excited Considering alec's brother (forgot his name) is rated higher than alec and Materas eldest boy Jordan was getting rave reports and Alec is shaping up as a top 20 pick.

There is some good young talent on the WCE list. I particularly like your KPP group.

Are you talking about Alec Waterman? I'm not familiar with whether he has a brother.

Jordan Matera (son of Peter) while I haven't seen him play has been talked up as an inside mid but still some way away from his draft year to really know just how good he'll become.

That makes sense. GC could do with a specialist heavyweight power forward and have shown a willingness to deal with GWS.

Also a willingness to take advantage of GWS' situations with the minidraft picks needing to be traded and now this year a key forward they probably don't have room for.

The other option for GWS could be to trade Patton on if Boyd is evaluated as the more likely to have a stronger career (this is my view - and with Patton having his knee troubles which I think will put him slightly behind all things said and done). And Patton will surely attract major currency being a recent former no.1 draft pick who still looks like he will become a monster so I can see as with Boyd he'd attract largely that same level of interest.

Food for thought anyway.

Love your Phantoms and read up on them regularly every year, and think your assessments are usually on the money once I see the players come through at AFL level.

A small thing, could you list player comparisons of players who have been around a bit longer, even if they are retired? Comparisons to Jonathon Patton or Lachie Plowman may be accurate, but I don't think too many people (other than the real followers of junior level) have seen enough of them to conjure a mental image of the way they go about it.

Would make these great write ups of even greater value for a keen follower of the game who can't get to see all these kids before their arrival. Thanks again for all this work every year.
