Interested in people's opinion on whether kouta is actually a champion of the game or just a very good player? I tend to think he is/was a very good player who is hyped up a little more then he should of been...

i agree that in his prime he was up there with the best of them but looking at his overall career, does he deserve to be classed an AFL champoin as many ppl think he is

As good as any going around, unfortunately injuries have hampered his careeer a bit and overall his career willl not be as good as some others.

Cheers

Depends on classification of a champion.

Early in his career he was acknowledged as a super-athlete who didnt necessarily combine that with footy smarts. Eventually he put it all together and was both unstoppbale and a joy to watch but he didnt do this over a prolonged period or with great consistency. When he finally appeared to have put it all together, including consistency, he started with the knee problems and hasnt been the same since.

So, while there is little doubt that his best was as good as anyone else in the comp and better than 99% the champion status may not be warranted due to the period of his greatness being relatively short.

Just my opinion.

good to see that opinion from a carlton fan... i personally think very highly of kouta and can olny imagine how good he could of been without all the injuries

i agree with you eagle87... for me, a champion is someone who sustains greatness over an extended period of time.... due to injuries, kouta was unable to do this

Sums it up perfectly.

He was the first 'real' athlete. Before then, clubs were only drafting 'footy players'...

He eventually married up his athletisicm and footy brain but I have to agree with previous posts, his knee's prevented him from turning it on consistantly after 2001 which never allowed him to win a Brownlow...

Has done enough imo to be called a superstar though...regardless.

Never won a Brownlow ;)

Alot of superstar's never won Borwnlow's....doesn't mean they're not stars.

Lethal Mathew's, ******** Carey are just some that pop to mind and I'm sure there are alot more than that.

Worsfold, Jakovich, McKenna, Peter Matera...None won a Brownlow yet were instumental in the Eagles 92 & 94 flags. Im sure many Eagles fans would have classified these guys as Stars of the game.

that game against Essendon he played probably the best quater of football ive ever seen.Period.But,sadly injuries did cut him down in his prime, and i think these days the term Champion, gets thrown around way to much.....

yeah, that game against the bombers and there was another against the eagles were he took about 20 marks or so.

He was in the top echelon (Carey, Hird, Voss) for a number of years and I reckon he deserves champion status.

People tend to judge players to harshly in there final years when they become mere mortals again.

Genuine superstar for about 5 years of his career, very good player for about 5 years and other years injured or late in career.

Champion!

Similar to Corey McKernan in the fact that his best was outstanding but he was unable to sustain it for whatever reason. Obviously his footy after his peak was better than Corey's but you get my point. I'd probably say not a league champion, but perhaps a club champion.

He's not in the same league as Buckley, Hird, Voss, Harvey who all have been amazingly consistent over their careers. If he wasn't for injuries though, who knows how good he could have been b/c at his best, he was arguably THE best. Depends what you classify as champion, the absolute best, or those around the best.
