Pardon the intrusion. So as a follower of AFL and Freo die-hard since 2014 (it was my glorious wife's doing not me being a Freo glory hunter, though ut would be wonderfully Dockery if it had of been), plus one of my best mates being a Pies fan I've missed the boat on hating you guys, in fact I've got a soft spot for you.

I ****ing loved Shoota at Freo. You've got a good one there. He's a hard-working, gritty, no-nonsense or sense of self-preservation forward with an eye for goal - I mean 30 goals for Freo is at least 50 for you guys. Credit to you, we got fair compensation and didn't have to listen or read about how he was only worth a future fourth.

Whilst I'm gutted, the family reasons appear to be genuine, and he's at least not going to Carlton. Treat him well, he'll always leave everything out on the field for you...

I just would have preferred to part with pick 19 than the future first.

So for me, we won't be able to judge the wisdom/cost of this trade until we see what guys like King, JUH and Logan Mac get traded for next year. And at that point there'll be little point bringing it up because people will be all 'hindsight's wonderful' yadayada and hopefully Lachie will be a premiership player so we'll all be fine with it lol
Unless we bombed next year we wont have the draft currancy and probably the cap space (assume 1M+for two of those) to get the deal done. JUH will be a JHF deal (picks 1-2 + F1 from bottom 6 side) King would be 2 early firsts ( picks 5-10 or one pick 1-4 and 1 pick in 15-30 range) and L Mac will be 2 good first rounders(8-14) or 1 very early pick. All of them would be almost impossible even if they chose Collingwood. Hey they might all re-sign. Im not even sure if our pressure game plan suits them tbh.

The only thing working against Schultz is that the world's biggest jinx ( pufferjacket-hating Kirby ) has already declared his recruitment a great success.
That guy single handedly bought Cox back into form for the finals this year by telling everyone that he was no chance of being useful in our team. ;)

He is 26 in 6 weeks and will stay at this level for about 4 tears and that's being conservative.

I'm glad someone brought up Bobby as a comparison, yes Shoota has him covered in most stats now but Bobby is 2 years younger and is definitely open to further improvement. And we paid extra first rounder to get Shoota.
Pretty bloody obvious which of those deals was massive overs.
Im more in the frame of mind that we payed unders for Hill. Which was good after GWS ripped us off for pick 2 in 2020.

There were a couple of mentions in earlier posts about the possibility of picking up a second first round pick for next year, presumably suggesting only one of the two would then be used for this Schultz trade. Forgive my ignorance but is this right? If so, how might we go about that?
Trade our 19 for a future pick to a team that had a father son player coming in or get a future 1st from a team that wants to draft a player at our pick 19 that they really like on draft night.

I think people are dreaming anyway. Hawthorn's MO was to bat deep rather than massive contracts for stars like Richmond went with. Picking up guys like Schultz and McStay point to GW bringing that MO with him to us. That alone makes it unlikely that we'll be in the running for guys who will be offered massive deals elsewhere.

And for those worried about the price….
He’s 25.let’s say we get 6 years out of him (being conservative).

So, would we get 6 years out of pick 30 (unlikely).
Would we get 5 years out of next years R1?
Maybe. But that 5+ years doesn’t actually start until the following year.
So my point being worrying about a future pick is 2-3 years from actually meaning anything.
In the time, if we pick up a FA, then that becomes moot,

The worry would more be that trading next years first means we are out on any trades next year. Ben King is effectively gone, people talking about JUH, that's gone now. Unless we trade a high end player or are looking at unrestricted free agents, we won't be bringing anything in of note next off season.

I will say, there’s an irony in the fact that we just recruited a player who in last years final against them I said:

“This Schultz dude looks like someone Freo just grabbed from the street just before the game started and put a jumper on him”

lol

Guess now it’s us that grabbed him from the streets of Freo and put a Pies jumper on him!
He was their best forward that night too

Glad to get Schultz but we overpaid in a massive way.

Hugely disappointed we have no first round pick next year and this year's first round pick is basically second round... I didnt see small forwards as deficiency we needed to give our future first round pick to address.
Disagree a little as it gives more midfield time to Beau and wing time to hill who have at least another 8-10 years

Some very polite Freo supporters coming here to congratulate us - thank you.

To the Pies posters reminding us of what we did poorly up forward this year - we won the flag! Our forward line did exceptionally well, given all these apparent failings. Schultz is made for Flyball and the Collingwood way up forward. He’s the perfect addition.

Unless we have a disaster season that future 1st is not going to matter anyways. We don’t have the assets to outbid other teams even with the pick.

We paid massive unders for Bobby hill and now because of that trade some posters will use that for every future trade to say we paid overs. That’s not how it works…

He finished 6th in the B&F

Correct.

But we will have budget for FA when the older players call it a day.

Mihoceks our tractor. Maybe he's a bailer?
