I think next year is FA year.
We'll have a fair bit of $ off the books by then and some retired senior citizens.
Our strat looks to have changed.

Give away the first, but if you bring in a solid FA next year, we’ll that’s the same thing in my book.
So I can see us not going to the draft much over the next 5 years….

We don't know the detail of the negotiation. What Fremantle asked for initially and any counteroffers we made.

There's only 1 fact, the agreed upon value between Freo and the Pies.

The club walked away with the player they wanted and a reputation of a good organisation to do business with.

Just as importantly the player wasn't made to feel like sh*t because the Pies low-balled his worth.

It's a fair result. I'd wager that Freo would rather have kept him.

No argument with any of that.

I just would have preferred to part with pick 19 than the future first.

Lots of people are comparing Lachie to a player we might have drafted next year with that pick and pointing out that Lachie's going to be much more useful, next year and for at least a year after that, and that is fair enough. But we could also have used that pick next year in a trade for another ready-made player - possibly, if combined with our next future first, an even better ready-made player - like a key forward.

So for me, we won't be able to judge the wisdom/cost of this trade until we see what guys like King, JUH and Logan Mac get traded for next year. And at that point there'll be little point bringing it up because people will be all 'hindsight's wonderful' yadayada and hopefully Lachie will be a premiership player so we'll all be fine with it lol

We don't do carefully considered, balanced and objective assessments like this here Jath.

You must be passing through from that place further up the road.

I'm very bullish on Lachie and expect that he'll not only fill the gap that Tay left but exceed his contribution. He'll do more for us than he did at Freo. The return to Melbourne, and a new role within the Collingwood environment will set him up to smash through previous ceilings.

The only thing working against Schultz is that the world's biggest jinx ( pufferjacket-hating Kirby ) has already declared his recruitment a great success.

My son has a love/hate relationship with that song.
His favourite Stones song is Brown Sugar.

Gimme Shelter here, although the backstory with Merry Clayton is very sad.

Fair point about not knowing how much that F1 will be worth come 2024 but I suspect the club is more focused on the short term. Arguably, rightfully so.

It's all about the here and now at Collingwood and I'm very excited about round 1.

We'll deal with 2025 after we win #17.

Hey you, get off of my cloud!

And for those worried about the price….
He’s 25.let’s say we get 6 years out of him (being conservative).

So, would we get 6 years out of pick 30 (unlikely).
Would we get 5 years out of next years R1?
Maybe. But that 5+ years doesn’t actually start until the following year.
So my point being worrying about a future pick is 2-3 years from actually meaning anything.
In the time, if we pick up a FA, then that becomes moot,
He is 26 in 6 weeks and will stay at this level for about 4 tears and that's being conservative.

I'm glad someone brought up Bobby as a comparison, yes Shoota has him covered in most stats now but Bobby is 2 years younger and is definitely open to further improvement. And we paid extra first rounder to get Shoota.
Pretty bloody obvious which of those deals was massive overs.

I went to like, but accidentally hit gift. If I wasn't such a tightarse I'd shell out $50 and gift you a pineapple.

What is a bigfooty pineapple gift entail?

I'm similarly tempted. The gift option allows me to permaban your sorry butt, but $3k is a lot of Hawaiian pizzas.

This guy walks into the best 22 of the premiership side and people are complaining about his value.

I’ll say it again. He walks into the best 22 of the best team in the comp.

Hopefully that’s clear.

Great addition and cant wait for him, hill and mccreery to make oppo defenders sweat when the ball hits the deck.

The old saying “make hay whilst the sun shines” well, we’ve just got ourselves a tractor 🚜

Mihoceks our tractor. Maybe he's a bailer?

One of the pick-ups of the trade period. Any player who can kick 30+goals, have 127 score involvements and 95 tackles in a season, will only make us better as we aim for back to back premierships.
Welcome to the Pies " The Sergeant" Schultz, and cannot wait to watch him go to work in 2024. He is going to be a beauty for us. I can actually see him pinch hitting in the midfield in the next year or two......GO PIES!!!

Wild horses for the stones best song for mine.

And I'm bloody rapt with Schultz. Just feel that our forward structure is more potent if we can get McStay or Cox to compete and bring it to ground.

I'm curious if anyone else felt this way but last year I felt our small forwards were often too unselfish. We would win possession but a lot of the time they would look for a handball instead of kicking for goal. Then the recipient would look for a handball and then it's either a rushed kick, tackle etc. Someone like Lachie will be able to do much better in making the most of small opportunities

I will say, there’s an irony in the fact that we just recruited a player who in last years final against them I said:

“This Schultz dude looks like someone Freo just grabbed from the street just before the game started and put a jumper on him”

lol

Guess now it’s us that grabbed him from the streets of Freo and put a Pies jumper on him!

Given that our premiership window is open NOW, I’m ok with paying overs if it gives us a better chance of winning again next year.

Anyhow, we won’t know whether we are paying overs until he starts playing for us.

There were a couple of mentions in earlier posts about the possibility of picking up a second first round pick for next year, presumably suggesting only one of the two would then be used for this Schultz trade. Forgive my ignorance but is this right? If so, how might we go about that?

A 3rd rounder is better than nothing.

Move up the board or get future picks by swapping with clubs who need FS/academy points.

Or trust Dekka to pick out a gem, like McCreery.

We’ve only got 3 list spots (currently) so I think 2 ND picks will likely see us out. We’ll then likely trial a couple of blokes for an SSP selection. But you could be right about Hine having a hardon for a smokie. Be an interesting watch.
