Laura Kane - Does Not Impress Me At All !!

Is the rumour about Kane forcing clubs to have a female present in their “war rooms” for the draft and one club having a membership chick in there true?

I’m all for Diversity and inclusion but that mandated approach is just tokenism. Work with clubs on creating better pathways into the roles for people with disabilities, women, cultural backgrounds etc.

Richmond had AFLW player Ellie McKenzie there.
I remember at the time thinking Ellie must be interested in list management or recruiting or talent scouting and thinking good on her.
Turns out she was possibly there to fill a quota.

It was on the scandals and rumours board. Supposedly 3AW reported on it.

Absolutely true and a symbol of how far the AFL has fallen. Laura Kane is a disgrace, what a sexist, tokenistic, anti merit directive.

How was it anti-merit? Are you seriously suggesting that clubs had unqualified people providing input into drafting decisions?

If instead the AFL had a directive that they wanted all clubs to have a young supporter in the box observing proceedings, would anybody have a problem with it? Of course not. And they certainly wouldn’t be labelling it a “disgrace”, “tokenistic” and “anti-merit”.

What about men in netball admin. Where are they?

Any forced need to have x or y type of person is clearly anti merit. If they had the merit to be there. They would be there. It's inherently anti merit.

I don’t think it’s a big deal.

Obviously if they said “you have to have a woman on your list management team” that’d be ridiculous.

This is just a TV production. That’s all. Everything about it is tokenism and show business.

What’s the worst that could happen? A girl sees it and thinks “hmm women can work in AFL admin”. I mean who really cares.

How is demanding someone gets into the room based on gender not anti merit?

Yeah. It's not needed.

Rubbish.

There are accepted examples all around our society of people being provided with exposure and opportunities to things that aren’t based on merit. Kids doing work experience. People getting access through an apprenticeship. Parents taking their kids to work. Med students observing autopsies. There was a time not long ago that expectant fathers didn’t belong in the delivery room but that’s now clearly changed.

When you see a 300 game player photographed on the MCG with their wife and kids, do you point out that the wife and kids don’t belong on the MCG because they didn’t get there on merit?

I’ve been inside the cockpit of a flying 747, inside an operational nuclear power plant, an operational coal fired power plant, and an operational steel mill. Was I visiting any of those environments based on merit? Absolutely not. But I was given as much control of those environments as any unqualified person in a draft ‘war room’ box on draft night.
