Laura Kane - Does Not Impress Me At All !!

Gale burnt bridges while at Richmond, apparently. I assume for him he’d only be interested in the CEO position.

Do tell. IIRC he applied for the CEO job but they only offered him the spot Laura Kane has, so he turned them down. Is that the case or something else occurred?

Don't know for certain but heard it was from things that happened during the COVID period. It may have also been pre-destined that Dillon succeed Gil, so moot anyway.

Having read the last few pages, I'd like to just welcome Laura Kane's dad to the discussion and thank him for the blind support of his daughter.

Dedication to the family cause.

How did she get the job?

IIRC she was elevated to an acting role to cover for Brad Scott when he moved to Essendon. And after a period of around 3 to 6 months, the powers that be (Gillan / Dillon / the commission) decided she was doing a decent enough job and gave her the role permanently.

Deep down everyone knows why……….because she is a girl.

She came in during a period when the biggest project for the AFL football department was probably the development of the women’s game. And whilst being a woman isn’t an essential qualification for that, it probably does give her a healthy passion and perspective for it.

And as an executive she doesn’t actually do any work (she has a small army of people under her to do the actual work), it’s all about decision making. And passion and perspective probably helps with that.

Enough talk of LK not being qualified to do the role, even if gender did play a part. She may be doing it badly at times but she was without doubt qualified. If she wasn’t there is no reason why the AFL would not have found another suitably qualified female.

What has she done well in her time in the role? Serious question.

Fixturing… while the NRL went to Vegas the AFL launched round zero. What a flat way to start the season against the AFLs biggest competitor.

Umpiring- rules on the run thru the year with reports umpires were coached in game. Monday media conferences where she defended almost all decisions was laughable too, until she realised how silly she looked and stopped.

Draft changes… Changing NGA rules only three years after they made the initial change, on the fly. Threats to change the draft points system mid season.

What’s she done well?

Only shit clubs were getting NGA's those years so if AFL is just for money making then its a brilliant decision to change the rules back once the popular clubs started having academy players coming through again.

The worst thing to happen to the AFL is her. Has NFI what she is doing or how to effectively communicate, and yet she is running the show. Already weaselled DEI into everything, the precedent of earned and deserved does not exist in her brain. Quality of product and employing best person for the job is not a priority.

  • Ruined the AFLW fixtures with condensing
  • Brought back OR, rejected by fans and compromised integrity of the game with extra byes for some clubs.
  • Trying to change academy rules mid season, clubs pushed hard back to prevent it
  • Sub rule back, rejected by fans and coaches
  • Attempts to communicate ump decisions leading to her stepping down from doing so.
  • Pushing woke agenda with DEI in broadcast deal/draft rooms
  • fines that don’t fit crime
  • All/most clubs frustrated with AFL decision makers per Morris on SEN all throughout the year.

Would like to see more people call it out like Grant Thomas.

Don't forget the shipwreck of an interview on SEN after the Petracca incident

I was actually thinking, I wonder if Dillon might be the first CEO moved on. I feel like if they got a new chairman that actually cares and has work ethic, he might think, gee, we could do a lot better here, this bloke has no presence or initiative. Of course they'd manage it out as Dillon stepping down due to personal reasons, but the amount of talented people out there even in club land, it seems silly to have a lame duck CEO.

If Kane and Dillon stop treating the football supporting public like mugs it’ll go a long way next year. Cease the bogus explanations of things and either stay silent on the controversial stuff or own the errors.

Most people on here are barely coherent and don’t have many thoughts in the bone arena of their skull. But the one thing they do have is PHDs in football - they generally understand what HTB is for example - so treating them like mugs on those things will never end well.

Merely pointing out the irony, my friend.

Nevermind GIF

Nothing, zero

Dillon the same so far, terrible CEO

The game is currently bumbling along under the momentum of previous administrations

On SM-A225F using BigFooty.com mobile app

Its the momentum of TV money and members handing over their cash because they love their teams - not because they like anything the AFL itself actually does.

I would have thought if, like me, you think Kane is doing a bad job and is out of her depth, you're far better off sticking to the line that Kane is doing a bad job and is out of her depth, rather than the line that she is just a DEI hire.

If you use the DEI line, it risks detracting from your message.

Firstly, it makes you sound like your saying no DEI hires can ever be competent or excel at their job, which is patently untrue.

Secondly, it makes you sound like you think any non-DEI hire i.e. a white male will always be better at his job than the DEI alternative, again patently unture. Plently of blokes get hired that are out of their depth and do bad jobs.

Kane is no good, let's leave it at that. A woman, even one hired under DEI policies, could easily be excellent, or at least be better than Kane
