I'd be quite happy to see Lever get some comeuppance but I'm not sure it's as certain as you think. I live in the same neck of the woods as the Levers and I know plenty of young blokes who know them personally and plenty of others who've had interactions with them in junior footy. Jake is not popular, even in his own family, and not too many people have anything nice to say about his dad. But Jake doesn't care. He has talent and he's got gargantuan self-belief. As much as it would be poetic justice to see him struggle, I reckon he'll come through it.
Oh, this is good. A cancer within causing disharmony and disrupting the club's season. Thank heavens Crows no longer has to deal with this (at least with him as the source).

I think it’s broken much better players than him

He is after all a middling talent who’d struggle to make the next level on even terms

I think calling him a middling talent is a bit unfair. He was drafted at Pick 14 after not playing in his final year of underage footy due to a knee reconstruction. Otherwise he would have been a top 10 pick.

On top of that, he’s shown a good ability to read the play and intercept or spoil as the third man in the contest. I never saw him duck a contest when dropping back into the hole to take a mark, like many other AFL players do. Plus, while he’s not quick, he has very good agility at ground level with the ball in hand.

It's not all good though. His one-on-one ability is poor, and his disposal at times is ordinary.

Yes, obviously the Crows defensive structures allowed him to play to his strengths, while shielding his weaknesses, but you don't fluke making the AA squad in your third season.

Tom Boyd at least won a flag for the Bulldogs before he started really sucking. Lever seems to have skipped the "be half-decent for my new club" bit.

Played 1 good game and it happened to be the grand final... Some would say it's still a worthwhile trade...

He is a top quality player in the role we had him play and structure allowed.

But is poor at the role the Dees want for him and their structure.

Another example of poor talent identification to suit team needs by the Dees. Much like Port with Rockliff.

I forgot Tippett on this list too
At least Tippett didn't cost the Swans any draft picks. It did cost them Mumford and a few other players though due to salary cap constraints.

That said, for the salary he was on, it was definitely a fail. Had the Swans known they would get Buddy the following year, I doubt they would have taken Tippett.

If they could go back in a time machine and have their time again, knowing what they know now - I reckon they'd still do it. Winning the flag justifies pretty much anything and everything you do to get there.

Brent Reilly made the AA squad playing the same role.

I daresay if Ricky Henderson had been afforded an uninterrupted season in the same role, he would have also been in the AA conversation.

Seeing a pattern ?

Speaking of the Lever trade

Did anyone hear the end of Rowie and Bicks last night? Rowie started talking about our draft picks this year when Bicks cut him off and made some stupid claim that we traded our 2018 first rounder to Melbourne as part of the Lever trade.

Seriously can people in the media start checking their info before making dumb statements

Fact checking is something most media commentators don't bother with. In some cases, I think they deliberately make factually incorrect statements to draw attention. Any attention seems to be good for media commentators.

Hahaha... how great is it reading this thread over on the dees board!..
It goes from cheering and happy at the start when the trade happened, to cockiness over getting from the crows, to fawning over the way Lever spoke elequently in his first presser, to how great he is gonna be for the entire team blah, blah, blah.... vomit..

To this;
So much wrong with him being at our club. Obviously gave way too much for him. 2 first round picks really hurt especially when the last two drafts we really haven't picked up any top line players, another year without getting our hands on a top line junior I believe will hurt us long term.
The acquisition of Lever has meant our back 6 has had to adapt to him being there. And our backline was pretty damn solid last year. Although you can't blame the poor form of Hunt, Hibberd and Jetta completely on Lever, surely it's no coincidence that their form slumps as he comes into the side.
Acquiring Lever has not only been disruptive to the back half, but his form has been horrible. If his name was Oscar McDonald, he would have been sentenced and hung by now by most supporters. His positioning is way off, his ball use is just horrible, and his decision making is one of the worst in the side.
Another problem is the coaches seem to have no idea how to use him. Whoever our backline coach is, should be sacked on the spot. We have arguably one of if not the best backlines on paper, yet have been performing as arguably the worst. If it's Troy Chaplin, then we should be having no hesitation to sack him. He stuffed up out offence last season, and is stuffing up our backline now. Get rid of him before he ruins this club.
Lastly, with what we paid for him in picks and in price, expectations are raised for player and club. So criticism will come fast and quick. And fair enough. We paid a bomb for him. He should be playing better.

By all reports Jake has good character. He will need it if his form continues as the criticism from fans, opposition players and media will keep coming until he starts to string some good games together. But hey, with what we paid for this guy, I expect him to not just be good. I fear for his mental state, not just his on field performance if things don't improve soon. If he is still playing this bad by mid season, there will be more than questions being asked. Let's see how Jake and the team respond.”

And this;

“Yeah, we rolled the dice with the odds in our favour, but the house always has the last laugh! I don't know, it didn't look like too much of a gamble on paper, but when you look at what we gave up, we should be getting a player who is a lock to at least hold his position in the best 22. Like I said, If his name was Oscar McDonald, he would have been banished to the VFL for the rest of the season. I've seen him live twice now, and he has picked off a few balls coming in, and done the occasional decent fist away, but unfortunately his errors have far outweighed the good things. Yes he is young and time is on his side to improve and gel with our back 6, but from what we have seen so far, the criticism is absolutely warranted at him, the coaches and the decision to pay a high price to draft him when on the verge of finals. He will be the most closely watched player next round and It will be fascinating to see how he responds against the best team in the AFL at the moment. I'd hate to think of what the media will do to him and us if we get smashed. Which is a definite possibility tbh..” end quote/

Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha.. ahahahahaha.. ahahahahahahahahahahahaha!.... it’s fu*king hilarious!!
Time to take the uniform to the dump Jake.

As usual with Rowie, he takes everything on face value and never questions whether anything he is being told is correct.

Wait we did? Oh okay then.

He does the same with Rucci all the time, Rucci will blatantly feed him bullshit and Rowie sits there with a spoon gulping it all up and never once questioning whether it's actually accurate or not.

Time to take the uniform to the dump Jake.

I think the guy is on the money though.

Now that Lever is on massive coin there are huge expectation that come with a contract like that, if he keeps playing badly that contract quickly becomes a psychological albatross around his neck and will begin to erode away at his confidence.

You only have to look at guys like Mitch Clarke and Tom Boyd to see the psychological damage that comes with younger players having to deal with massive expectations on their shoulders by switching clubs due to massive offers.

Lever could potentially become the next Mitch Clarke/Tom Boyd or he could get back to his Adelaide form and silence all the doubters, at this stage I really don't know which way it will go.

So apparently the Demon's captain has added more time for Jake to get up to speed. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-04-18/levers-start-with-dees-has-been-rocky

Nathan Jones' closing comments on him, "Judge him in another five, six or seven weeks when he starts to become the general down there and really understands how we work as a group,".

So between Goodwins round 8 comment, now potentially another 7 week cushion after round 4 could push him as far back as round 12 before the Demons should expect him to come good! 12 GAMES!!!!! At $800K/year and completely healthy you better be coming good before the freaken bye round champ!!

Can you imagine if Pykey said we could only expect a good game out of Gibbs by round 12? This place and Adelaide in general would melt the F down!

Otherwise... meh too easy to say stuff like that

And his drafting has little bearing on him showing himself to be a middling talent as a senior player

The thing about his game vs the Hawks was that he clearly was getting his hands on it but the butchery of the ball was really bad. It looked like when he looked up to kick there were no options. I think that his teammates up the field are letting him down a bit. In saying that I'm still indulging in a fair amount of schadenfreude.
