Thought he played well with out getting much possesion. Mucked up once by kicking into his own team mate. But made up for it by running down the man he gave it to. A very nice running back with the flight of the ball mark. Then prescision kick to a team mate on the wing in between two opponents. Some great early signs. Solid B grade at the moment yes. Next year with a better tank and another pre season along with a better team and possibly coach. .could be anything or more. Very happy with this pick. Well done carlton

I agree with this too. I think with a better team, better situation and guided by a better coach - he could perhaps next year get a senior game for Carlton & be handy

Has a leg like Shannon Hurn which is rare for a midfielder and is strong over the ball with some speed, hopefully he makes some big strides next few pre seasons with his running, looks like he's a good player when he's got it but will never get enough of it with his current fitness to be a top AFL player. Could end up like Dusty... could end up stuck in defense forever... seems entirely dependant on his fitness. Doubt we'll see the potential of this bloke for at least 4 or 5 years so im not really sure why we traded such a high pick for him as if he was going to come in and make an immediate impact. Questionable by SOS, but I guess we wait and see.

There's no way he's solid B grade atm...

Stocker "could end up like Dusty"????

Good Grief!

Perhaps Shane Tuck, which is not an insult as he was a 150+ game player who had a couple of top rate seasons & thereafter was very serviceable indeed.

Wasn't really meaning as good as Dusty, was more referring to that when Dusty came into the league he was well below AFL midfielders fitness and over the years as he's developed his fitness to be able to run out games as a mid. Same could be said about Hodge, Stringer etc. Talented players but until they can run out games they can't reach their ceilings. Stocker seams to have good skills and game sense but he's a long way off from being able to rack up 30 disposals regularly where he can impact games.

He's shown that he has all the necessary tools. Give him time, strength and fitness and hell be able to strongly capitalise on the ability he's got. He will turn into a good quality footballer at this pace.

Spot on , that’s the feeling I have too, today game was his 4 or 5 in difficult circumstances. He’ll be a quality midfielder with grunt and attitude, has a beautiful kick on him too both sides.

In 2010 Martins debut year he played 21 games for an average of

20.2 disposals
0.5 goals (11 total)
3.3 tackles
4.8 clearances

78.2% Gametime average.

Liam stocker

14 disposals average
0 goals
0.75 clearance average
2 tackles

73% Gametime average.

Those straws you're clutching at with the comparison, keep clutching because they're nothing alike. Martin played almost exclusively midfield im his early career, especially year 1 when it was just basically a young Cotchin and Martin as the only elite talent in there. Hardwick even made mention of the issue of Martin spending so much time playing midfield in his early career that he didn't want Martin to breakdown later on in his career, and that's when Martin started spending almost 50/50% midfield and forward and more outside then inside.

There is literally 0 comparison between Stocker and Martin.

One player walked into the AFL as a 18 year old and carried a football club and dominated the other has shown a couple of glimpses of doing a couple of good things.

Once again, I havent said he'll ever be in the same realm as Dusty. Dusty is a brownlow medalist and basically carried the tigers to a flag. I'm purely saying that when Dusty came in his big fault was his fitness and that Stockers flaw is the same. If stocker wants to end up playing as a big body powerful mid, he needs to work on his endurance. Doesnt mean he will ever be a brownlow medalist, doesnt mean he will ever be a gun, just saying that he needs to work on his endurance because his 2 way running looks a major liability atm.

Saw him live yesterday. I've said before that he looks like he might be a handy type eventually, but I can't for the life of me see how SOS had him ranked top 6 in what looks like one of the strongest drafts we've seen.

Is this coming from a decent source or is it just a rumour?
the whole pick 6 thing came from the video Carlton released where they traded the pick for him, should still be on youtube. I'm in the same boat as you, looks like he could eventuate to something but when u have Conor Rozee and Bailey Smith around him its pretty hard to see why he was rated as high as he was by SOS, especially if you're looking at being ready to impact this year.

12 touches today bit of a quiet game.

Looking forward to Liam bouncing back next week.

Was taking some kick ins as well, which would inflate his disposal numbers.

His direct opponent Parker would have had a huge day if not for inaccuracy in front of goal. Parker ended up with two goals, one behind, one OOF and another shot from 40m out in front that he passed to an open teammate.

Feel sorry for the kid with the pick trade thing combined with the rating as 6th best player on carlton's list
Young kids have enough pressure in the afl and dont really need things like this also.

What we should be looking at is he was selected as pick #19 and judge him in 3-4 years
Its not as if he is tracking like a top 5 pick that cant get a run from a draft thats 12 months prior

Dusty in 2010. His first season got:

clearances 101
disposals 425 (70.6 DE%)
tackles 70
goals 11
inside 50s 74
brownlow votes: 6
contested possessions 179

You are correct both Stocker and Martin had 'fitness issues' like many first year players. Yet dusty had a pretty solid season

The saints had less experienced team and both sides were the same age in the Saint v Carlton contest.

Was a pretty even match up generally

The misconception here is Carlton weren't looking at drafting talls, it's likely the 6th best midfielder based on needs.
