Not true, we can take both. Even if two clubs are bidding to use their first round picks of both of them we would have to use a first round on one then our second round on the other(assuming they are worth it). We have to use our next available pick on father son's once they have been bid one, there isn't a limit on how many you can pick.

Re: Liba and Wallis

The Father-Son from Wikepedia

Current Rule
In 2007 the AFL made an important amendment for the father-son rule, establishing a bidding system to determine which draft pick a club must give up to secure the potential recruit. The current system works as follows:[1] [2]

1. Individual clubs are free to nominate potential father-son recruits within the above eligibility guidelines.
2. A meeting is held on the Monday before the start of trade week where clubs can bid for the nominated players. Each club has the option to bid, in reverse ladder order, for the nominated players.
3. If a bid is made, the club that nominated the father-son player must use its next available selection if it wishes to retain its hold on that player. If a club nominating the father-son player declines to match the selection nominated, the club with the successful bid must use that selection at the Draft to select the player.
4. Any club that makes a successful bid on a father-son selection is bound to the pick they nominate.
5. If no bid is made by another club, the club that nominated the father-son eligible player will forfeit its last selection in the draft to select the player.

Victorian clubs
Each club can select any player whose father played a minimum of 100 senior games for the side. The two interstate clubs with historic links to Victorian Football League teams, namely the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans, can choose the sons of players who have appeared 100 times for either themselves or their predecessors, the Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears or the South Melbourne Football Club respectively.

This shows there is no limit. However my interpretation of first available pick, would be that if 2 clubs each nominated one of the eligible players within the same round, the club would need to make a choice between the 2 with that next pick, and the player not taken would revert to the club who were bidding with their choice.

We don't know if this is likely to be a problem. Liberatore at about 178cm is not, at this stage, likely to be an early choice.

If Essendon bid their first round pick(4) for Wallis and West Coast bid their first round(5) pick for Libba then we would have to use our first round pick(16) on Wallis then our next available pick(32) on Libba:thumbsu:.

Thanks for that Masterchef :thumbsu:. I wasn't aware of that. I had the same understanding of the rule as Bulldog Joe.

Re: Liba and Wallis

I know nothing about them - are they any good? Cordy was >200cm so good decision but what is the word on these two? Is Libber short like his old man? Can Wallis kick more than 40 metres?:D

You may be right chef, but the powers that be might need to clarify. It probably will never come up.
I don't think, even Geelong with their plethora of father/sons, have had 2 in the same year worthy of round 1.

Woolnough and Scarlett went in the same year from memory. Possibly Callan and Ablett as well. I'm also pretty sure that Heath and Brayden Shaw went in the same year at Collingwood as well.

Libba's son played in the Vic Metro under 16 side last year while Mitch Wallis was injured but was still taken interstate with the side(regarded highly with the coaches). Still a long way to go but they sound promising.

Is there any more F/S coming through in later years? Zane Cordy is meant to be promising and represented Vic Primary schools last year. Still early days i know, but majority of the good players today have played in these games.

Good to see the dogs are setting up a F/S development program too:thumbsu:. There was article not long back in the Hun.

Don't care if can kick more than 40m. If young Wallis is anything like his old man, we'd take him in a heartbeat. Ask Bret Heady and Andrew Bews what they thought of Steve Wallis.

BTW...I know you raised this in jest.

Ablett went 2001 while Callan went in 2002.

Scarlett and Woolnough both went in 97 but i was under the impression only Scarlett went Father Son?

Spot on about Shaw boys, both went Father/Son in 2003.

Yeah, I know. Would add even more guts to our new tough midfield. Wallis was a gun....but kicked like Terry Wallace!(don't attack me for mentioning his name)

Thanks for confirming. Woolnough was definitely a F/S, and was rated quite a bit higher than Scarlett at the time - he had massive wraps on him but knee injuries unfortunately killed his career.

Interesting that in both cases only one was worthwhile, although it might have been difficult if the club had been required to choose to an earlier draft pick on any of them.

Re: Liba and Wallis

i dont care how tall they are, if they are any good and worth the pick then pick them, we cant keep picking 200cm ruckman.

are you going to past up the next G. Ablett just cause he is not 194cm+

Re: Liba and Wallis

The draft in which both of these guys will be available will be the one that will be decimated by the GC picks, right? In other words, our first pick is going to be pick 30 or something, and the next one pick 47 or somesuch.

Thats a very good draft to have a gun F/S available (wallis), and even if libbas son isnt supposed to be a gun, a pick in the 40s could still be good value.

to clear things right up.
i have played against both of these boys and are mates with them,
libba is a in an under type like his father, lots of handballs but can kick well aswell. wallis is an hang out player who loves to run and carry.
out of the two. generally libba is the better of the two.

We need to make sure they are only selected on merit

We don't need to be stepping out with a Cloke/Collingwood like arrangement.

I agree it needs to be on merit only. Bit harsh on the Cloke boys though. Travis is coming along really well and Cameron has been pretty good since his move to Carlton. Jason was good while his lose man in defense role was able to be used at the highest level.

Yep. And probably the reason why Clayton left to go to GC.
With GC and WS coming in, upcoming drafts will be compromised, us more so with a couple Father Sons coming in. So our recruiting guys for the next few years will be watching a lot of football without that many picks to play with.
Though we will really miss Clayton's knack for pulling smokies, guns and AFL level role players from late picks.
