Dear Members

This has been one of the AFL's biggest weeks off the field, as the Essendon situation has reached a conclusion.

As I said last week on behalf of the Brisbane Lions, we fully endorse the conclusion to the Essendon matter as determined by Mike Fitzpatrick, Andrew Demetriou and the entire AFL.

Our game demands the highest standards of conduct.

Closer to home, this week, the Board of the Brisbane Lions ratified our Club’s Senior Coach selection process.

The coaching process is one of the most important in our Club’s history and the outcome needs to deliver a Senior Coach that will take the team to the next level.

The sub-committee is excellent: Dean Warren, Brett Burton, Malcolm Holmes, Leigh Matthews and Peter Schwab, as well as non-voting member, Paul Armstrong.

Club politics has rightfully taken a back-seat to this process.

It also epitomises a Club determined to put Board matters aside while getting on with the job at hand.

The Club launched our vision at the end of 2011 and we remain on this course. I’m pleased that Paul Williams fully endorsed the exact same vision in Brisbane’s Sunday Mail on August 25.

All parties – Lions members included – agree that Leigh Matthews has a role to play on the Board.

I’ve been vocal about this in the past. I’ve also had an open invitation for two-and-a-half years to Leigh for him to join the Board given the football expertise and presence he would bring. In 2012, the Board went as far as amending our Club’s Constitution, in order to facilitate Leigh’s appointment as a Director.

However, our Club simply can’t afford to sacrifice four of the six Directors.

Not when you’re a $45million business and are required to make the tough – but right – decisions, and not just the popular ones.

The rival ticket, from what I’ve seen in the media over the past week, appears to have been formed because:

- The decision not to renew Michael Voss’ contract is unpopular; and
- The Club has not secured the services of Paul Roos as our next Senior Coach.

I want to clarify these points because, understandably, there is a lot of passion for Michael Voss and confusion about Paul Roos.

The Voss decision was an incredibly tough one but, at the same time, it was delivered by a unanimous vote as the result of a thorough review. The resolution to not offer Michael a new contract was moved by Paul Williams. All Directors – Paul Williams, Mick Power, Peter McGregor, Cameron Milner, Linda Nash and myself, voted on the matter. This has been recorded in the minutes of the Board meeting and suggestion to the alternative is wrong.

On Paul Roos, he contacted me midway through last week and informed me that, due to family reasons, he would be unable to relocate to Brisbane and was therefore ruled out as a candidate.

I have a good relationship with Paul and our discussions were always honest and open.

I hope this clears up any confusion. I won’t be talking publicly about the Voss decision further, however, I felt a number of inaccuracies needed to be addressed.

The next Senior Coach of the Brisbane Lions will now inherit a side that, remarkably, is on the verge of an unlikely finals appearance following the conclusion of the Essendon matter.

It would be only the second time in nine years, should we win, that the team has made the finals. It’s about time – don’t you agree?

If you are in a position to do so, please get down to Geelong and help cheer our boys home.

We’ve done it once already in 2013. Lightning can strike twice.

Go Lions!

Angus apparently can't count. Only 3 board members would be removed (Himself, Nash and Milliner) and they would be immediately replaced with Leigh Matthews, Ross Thornton and Dr Allan Smith.

Condescending much? Not to mention making the decision to sack Voss seem even more shaky.

He also says what he knows of the Rival ticket (and why they are challenging) is from what he's gleaned from the media...

They haven't spoken?

WTF!????

NFI. I just got all my FAQ info off the website.
The constitution allows Full Members 1 vote maximum.

Full Members qualify by their membership. Having multiple memberships would not entitle someone to multiple votes, as they are already qualified as a Full Member as a result of the 1 membership.

Good to see we're not doing a running commentary on the coaching position

The board should put up these letters more often to let members know what's going on. I know it may be skewed in one direction but it's still very interesting and informative to members and prospective members.

Assuming this, then if I ring up the club and get them to change the name on one of the memberships then myself and person number 2 may vote?

This is the crux of it.
Not Voss or Roos, that only when pushed or dragged kicking and screaming does this board engage the club's members and supporters.
2 weeks after Voss' 'sacking' and a week after Roos told him an adamant 'no' we get clarification, only because a call for an EGM has gathered steam.
Piss weak. And frankly not good enough.

I've seen the Chairman's Email. I've got some issues with its content:

"However, our Club simply can’t afford to sacrifice four of the six Directors."

Misleading. I haven't seen anywhere where Williams/Power have indicated that they want Peter McGregor to be axed. In fact in the media I'd suggest they have indicated the contrary. Also - its certainly not part of the resolutions put forward in the EGM letter from members as per the TLR website. Only Johnson, Nash and Milner are mentioned.

"I’ve also had an open invitation for two-and-a-half years to Leigh for him to join the Board given the football expertise and presence he would bring.

Is this not an indicator that he thinks you're doing a crap job Angus, given he wants onboard now?

"The rival ticket, from what I’ve seen in the media over the past week, appears to have been formed because:

Totally misleading. I'd suggest that the ticket was formed because Angus and Holmes botched the public announcements and presser of the Voss non-renewal to the point of embarrassing a club legend, and creating a situation where the Club was viewed as a joke - in addition to the botching of the Paul Roos courting. Nowhere has Williams/Power indicated that the Voss non-renewal decision wasn't unanimous. They aren't running a "Bring Back Voss" campaign as part of their ticket.

"On Paul Roos, he contacted me midway through last week and informed me that, due to family reasons, he would be unable to relocate to Brisbane and was therefore ruled out as a candidate."

Its been publicly mentioned by those in the know with Roos, and I believe by Roos himself, that he'd be unlikely to relocated his family in 2014 due to one of his kids finishing Year 12 next year and thus it would be a major disruption. Here's an idea Angus - how about convincing him to be a match day senior assistant for 2014 working with Mark Harvey, with Roos taking over in 2015 as Senior Coach? Or something outside the square? And if you were the one in charge of communicating with Roos "6 weeks" prior to the final Voss decision, why did it take 10 or so weeks to get that "due to family reasons" answer? It wasn't a "I don't want to Coach" answer. It was a "I can't move my family" answer.

My blood is boiling with the condescending nature of Johnson's email.

He contradicts himself to suit his changing arguments.

First he has been saying all year that the decision on Voss wouldn't be made until the end of the year - WRONG he gets sacked with 3 rounds to go.

Second he states when Voss is sacked that there are 2 strong candidates for the job and that he is happy with the talks - WRONG he clearly put all his eggs in the Paul Roos basket and now it has come back to bite him in the face.

Third - he claims that he will not provide a running commentary on the coaching process - WRONG he is doing just that.

Four - he says in his letter to members that he is putting politics aside - then proceeds to play the political game for the rest of the letter.

TIME TO GO ANGUS. YOU HAVE TURNED OUR CLUB INTO A JOKE AND LAUGHING STOCK!

I don't want to know about the conversation with Roos last week.

I want to know the content of previous conversations.

I'll have the dates of those conversations too thanks Angus.

I thought his youngest son was doing year 12 this year?

Is that a backhander to Matthews?

We've had an open invitation for him to come on board for the last 2 and a half years, but we can't sacrifice 4 (in reality 3) of the Board members to get him on, when we have to make the right decisions, not the popular ones?

I wonder how close we are to reality to say that - Roosy doesn't want to work with the current board - Matthews doesn't want to work with the current board - close to nobody wants to work with the current board. Unpopular indeed.

So lets talk about finals.

**** me this club's in trouble.

The biggest issue for me is the denial of the reality of the situation. Leigh Matthews ticket (for the sake of a better name) will win this thing by 98%, we know it, the media knows it, the players know it, the members know it, the entire football world knows it - so in essence, Angus is fighting for the sake of fighting, which as Hird said in his video address to fans Dons fans last night, sometimes you have to Not fight, for the betterment of the club.

Surely he and the other two have weighed up the chances of winning the vote at an AGM/EGM and have realised they have literally zero chance, and they have agreed on principle, to fight it out.

Is anyone here is any doubt that the new ticket will win? Am I wrong on this?

It is so frustrating, if it was a no body running against them, or even this ticket without Matthews, fair enough, you might be a chance, fight it out. But given who is involved here, they need to face the facts.

They are essentially starving the club of the best football person available in Australia, it is not a matter of who is on the board, its about recruiting the most influential football person in australia to our club.

Also on Roos - the 'relocating the family' is designed to say, "it wasn't the way Voss went down", "it wasn't the current board", "it wasn't because of my handling of the whole situation"..... "it was because my Mate Paul didn't want to move his Kids to Brisbane"..... BULLSHIT! and if that is true, and Roos's only problem is 'moving his family", then the sooner we get Leigh in as director of footy the better, because Roos is still a chance.
