"I was in the process of rolling down the hill to the cab rank and as I came down the corner there is a particular rough surface, that's when I hit (came across) this idiot and he was running at me screaming 'wheelchair, wheelchair, wheelchair'."

So according to the man the incident happened in a hilly area, and as he turned the corner a man running to him was screaming, "wheelchair, wheelchair, wheelchair". Sounds like a warning call to his mates to avoid running into the man. Someone brushes him, but a collision is avoided. There's a brief teasing exchange, some banter from boys out having a good time, harmless, they get in the cab and go.

What the hell was the lawyer/journalist on making the allegations in the initial reported?

Seems like the most logical story I've heard all day

Lots of panic button pushing going on... found guilty by trail of media and internet forum..where some have let the facts get in the way of a good story....
Shall enjoy reading the knee jerk reactions and wait for the final story before passing any judgement

Most people were simply responding to the initial report and did so on the basis of "if true". If there were some slightly over the top comments, it was because it was quite a confronting story at first. An emotional response would be expected, I'd have thought.

There is no suggestion that he physically hit anyone. Same as "running into" a mate at the pub.
Still, doesn't seem to be much in it even from the victim's own account. He was jostled and pushed around by some drunk louts. Bad behaviour that should be punished. Doesn't fit our no dickheads policy.
No injuries, no falling over. The bloke admits to calling the "culprit" a campaigner (that's a C ending in T) which is a pretty aggressive reaction to some drunken idiot getting excited about his chair.
Don't want to paint the victim as the bad guy either, just going about his business, but even his own account sounds pretty tame.
Fines all 'round and stay off the piss boys.
At least they didn't set him alight.

Even if it's a criminal act? Wow, we'll have to wait and hope that things abate considerably.

Hurley.
Swan.
Adams.
Scotland.

All assaulted someone, all still on lists. I'm sure there are others that I'm not recalling off the top of my head.

Hell, have a look at the Voss, Black, etc, "brawl".

These things are never as they first appear because it's always a one-sided view released first. It's also never the player's version that gets heard first, or even immediately. Players are also never delisted unless a) it's (alleged) rape or b) there's actual jail time.

Pragmatist here.

You forgot ran into the guy as well.

So we actually have a bloke who can't yet control his wheelchair running into a Lions player, who then pushes him off. Bloke makes fun of said player, who plays along and in the process drops his kebab. Opportunistic bloke then concocts a story for the police and entails an ambulance chaser to represent him.

Colombo...eat your heart out.

I was driving to NSW this morning, nearly drove off the road when I heard the first revision of this story come over the radio. Now there's been a bit more info come to light, I'm more of the opinion right now that the yelling "wheelchair" is to alert the others that this guy was coming at pace down the hill from around the corner - I genuinely cannot fathom how someone would intentionally do all of those things that were alleged - especially a senior player - AND to have the rest of the players around him just let it all unfold???

Just doesn't add up at all. I'll be interested to hear more, *surely* there's some CCTV footage somewhere.

I allege that using ones own disability, or in the case of a lawyer or a journalist as part of a PR stunt, is discrimination. Insert a man on crutches, a pram or a shopping trolley into the frame and there would not be a story. Highlighting disability as a device for personal advancement or for anything other than due justice and equality is the crime here.

I don't think I ever walked out. Mostly stumbled, occasionally fell.

This is me at 13 inspecting the scene in 1994. I didn't see anything.

Totally disagree. This is a story for the media irrespective of who was the target.

The press would write about anyone who alleges they were assaulted by a professional footballer, outside a pub, when said player is on an end of season bender.

And why is it discriminatory for the person involved to use his own disability to highlight the circumstances? In the case of someone in a wheelchair, he is potentially more vulnerable. He is less likely to be able to defend himself. He is potentially more reliant on the taxi service. All those factors legitimately exacerbate the seriousness of the allegation.

"was rolling down the hill at Toowong to the taxi rank ".

The area outside the taxi rank near the old superchicken is practically flat??

It is - he might mean High St, which is a downhill run ... but there's no way you'd "have a taxi" because the rank is about 100m from a blind corner.

I still don't like the sound of it, but it is starting to appear less horrid than it did.
