Dual All-Australian Dan Houston wants to play for Collingwood, according to The Age, with a potential three-way trade between them, Port Adelaide and Gold Coast on the cards.

The deal could involve up to four players with the Magpies’ Joe Richards keen to join the Power, his teammate John Noble wanting to get to Gold Coast, and the Suns’ Jack Lukosius looking to join Port Adelaide.

But as it stands Gold Coast has rejected the Pies’ offer of a future first-round pick and John Noble for selections 13 and 23, according to the report. The Pies’ plan was to make that deal, then send pick 13 and Richards in exchange for Houston, but the Power are said to be unlikely to accept that offer.

The Suns would prefer to deal with Collingwood over clubs like Carlton (who have offered future picks for pick 13, which they would on-trade for Houston) and North Melbourne (who have offered their future first-round pick) because of Noble’s request to head north.

But they also want Collingwood to have the assets to land Houston, because that would provide Port Adelaide with an additional first-round pick, so they could happily send out their future first-round pick for Lukosius.

However the report stated the AFL has told Port Adelaide it will not need special approval to trade its future first-round pick, as was believed to be the case due to the Power using just two first-round picks over the last four years. However in one of those years they traded for 2021 No.1 pick Jason Horne-Francis meaning he is effectively considered a used first-round pick.

While eventually these players may move to their preferred clubs in separate swaps, they are all intertwined and could end up moving in the same mega-deal.
Mega deal?

Mega Death (by a thousand cuts) more likely.

I just want an uncomplicated deal that deservedly maximises our return for Dan.
We can deal for Richo and Luko separably once we get some picks for the likes of Soldo, Clurey, Wiilliams, et al.

Another shot at the trade

Trade 1
Collingwood : Pick 13
GC : Noble & Pick 36, Pick 52 & Col. FP2 (Similar to what we did with Freo last year)

Trade 2
Port : Pick 13, Col. FP1 & Richards (Col. need permission to trade out both FP1 & FP2)
Collingwood : Houston

Trade 3
Port : Luko & Pick 23 (We take on full salary)
GC : Port FP1

Net result :
Port Gain : Pick 13, Col. FP1, Pick 23, Luko & Richards
Port Lose : Port FP1, Houston

Then we try and trade Col. FP1 and Soldo to St Kilda for Pick 8

GC : would not accept Noble & Pick 36, Pick 52 & Col. FP2 for Pick 13
Where they have alreay turned down Noble + future first for it.

Take Trade 3 and then look else where to trade Dan
Port : Luko & Pick 23 (We take on full salary)
GC : Port FP1

"I love what the Pies are doing. They've got Perryman through the door as a free-agent and are all in with the attempt at Dan Houston. They are not dying wondering in having a go at this."- Damian Barrett on the Pies bringing in players this off-season

Trade 2
Port : Pick 13, Col. FP1 & Richards (Col. need permission to trade out both FP1 & FP2)
Collingwood : Houston
Collingwood wouldn't get permission to do this. Port couldn't get permission to trade out a future 1st and a future 3rd when trying to get a 19 year old JHF.
Collingwood wouldn't get permission to do this for a 28 year old.

If we're giving up a F1 then GC pick up most of the salary.

3 x Miles Bergman/Mitch Georgiades' = yes please!

3 x Dylan Williams', not so much.

Our list management team have a pretty good record with these kind of picks in good drafts though.

Bergman wasn’t a late 1st. Was pick 12 at the start of draft night and ended up pick 14 after two nga bids (Henry , green).

Georgiades pick was 16 when the draft kicked off.

Why is it that Gold Coast are prepared to bend over for Richmond and give up 6 for Rioli but want make up for it by bending us over for Luko when the Luko contract looks like a Bowes situation all over again.

Is it because Gold Coast are full of AFL appointments from Victoria?
Because one of the few (maybe only) times GC have been overpaid for a player is what we gave up for Dixon. Port's current administration is noted for selling unders and paying overs. For more than just paying and getting fair prices this year, Port must not overpay for Luko or take unders for Houston, or we'll remain the easy touch. Hold the line on both this year and clubs won't come into trades next year onwards, with the default position of 'Here's the lube guys'.

Again, we handed Aaron Young to them for nothing a year after he had completed his best season. We are pathetic and our inability to get our full list composition spot on under Hinkley, Davies Cripps and Parker’s watch is the reflection of that. Always missing pieces. Never balanced properly. Yes, our development and coaching sucks too but our overall list management is nowhere near as good as people think it is. It’s resulted in a middling team under a middling coach.

I think that’s what our club wanted. They are terrified of going to the bottom, it’s not sustainable for our club.

So being partially relevant whilst conditioning a supporter to base to love and support the club when it doesn’t or can’t win.
