Hartigan is a competitor. Something the Saints are sorely lacking. Plenty of talent but how many on the list would go at 100% until they collapsed?

You don't keep a player on the list because he may be useful to train against.

He can just as easily do that being a development coach whilst not being on the list.

If we have a spare list spot and more money in the player salary cap than the soft cap then you use the player cap.

They’re rumored to have offered him 2 years.

Very St Kilda thing to do. Not to pile on Hartigan, but a player turning 31 who couldn’t get a game in a rebuilding side doesn’t exactly scream out 2 year deal.

He was our fourth-best player, in my opinion, but now that Maynard has earned the distinction of being named to his first All-Australian team, he has got to be the most underrated defender in the AFL. It is a complete farce that he is not mentioned in AFL media.
Don’t worry I would have Maynard in a flash. Favourite Collingwood player. Love his grunt, hard work and usually searing left foot.

Many saying he's contracted to us for 2023.

HedgeFund's adamance on this one aside - the AFL website has him listed as a FA. I get the AFL and getting it right don't go hand in hand - but I would have to believe they'd at least get that right.

Those AFL FA status things are often wrong. But reading about it more, I'm convinced he had a 2 year with a trigger for a 3rd. Doubt he played enough games, but he did clock up 22 over the 2 years so who knows.

I suspect we have an option to extend in the contract.

Can you do that with someone who has free agency rights? Feels like something the players association wouldn't love.

How ?
He is listed as a FA on every website
If we don’t exercise a clause in a contract I’d imagine he can leave as a free agent. But those lists are put together early in the year and may not adequately account for such clauses. He may well leave as a free agent regardless but I think the source of the ambiguity is likely a trigger clause plus a club option to extend him.

You don’t think options exist in contracts? If he came to the club with a two year deal plus an option for a third which could be triggered under specific conditions, then why would anyone have an issue with that? In any case, I think it likely he leaves as a free agent regardless but it would explain a lot is such a condition exists in his contract.

I didn't doubt that such options exist in contracts - I was asking whether you knew if they are allowable for a free agent. Free agency is meant to tilt favour to the player due to their tenure in the game so I wasn't sure if team based options would be contrary to that.
