As for Virgina, McCain has a 57-42% edge at present but from what I understand alot of Obama's votes will come from coastal areas.

The likes of which have yet to be totalled.

If we he wins by big margins in those presincts then these a strong chance to carry the state.

Go to the New York Times website and click on their "big map". To the left of the page (down past half-way) there is a slider which you can slide from 2008 back to 1992. You can also zoom on each state to bring up the map of the counties. In combination you can see which candidate won which counties in each particular state back to 1992.

After all, Bush was re-elected in 2004.

Yeah I agree, it is a disgrace that they are voting on race. And some of the stupid comments I heard last night from the American public no wonder they aren't as respected around the world. Last night on 4 corners I heard people saying stuff like we wont vote for him cause he's black, he is against guns, he is a Muslim terrorist who is a socialist and will only stand up for the blacks, Muslims etc. ****ing disgrace, that's why I think Obama will loose American public will show their true colours.

South Carolina has started reporting and Obama has a lead with virtually nothing reported.

One should think he'll lose the state (as averaged polling clearly evidenced) but he may get closer than anticipated.

Notwithstanding the paucity of a spread in South Carolina, MSNBC has just called SC for McCain, giving him a 16-3 lead in the electoral college.

In about 7 minutes time the voting in 20+ (I can't be bothered giving you the exact figure) will close.

North Dakota and Pennsylvania are the most notable/pivotal ones amongst that lot.

(although ND carries only 3 electoral votes)

Great start for Obama. Indiana has very few votes from Indianapolis and Gary yet its still extremely close, and Virginia has pretty much only retuned rural counties so far. Watch for a big swing to Obama there when the city counties come in.

I've been watching the figures for North Carolina. Very encouraging for Barack Obama at this stage.

MSNBC calling Pennsylvania for Obama. Florida too close to call.

Overall, MSNBC reckons that Obama has 103 votes to 34 votes for McCain.

CNN have thrown Illinois and most of the Northeast (bar New Hampshire) into the Democratic column. Nothing overly controversial there you'd imagine.

Obama's hanging tough, and Lake County (Gary) has yet to report, Marion County (Indianapolis) is 2% in, and St. Joseph's County (South Bend) is only 33% in.

These are the Dem strongholds in the state.

UPDATE: St. Joseph's now 62% in, Marion 8% in.

Overall, 51-48 McCain.

It still looks terrific for Obama.

Update 2: Monroe County (Bloomington) also hasn't reported.

Irrespective of that the information is still relevant. (and encouraging)

There's no reason to distort the composition of counties.
