If Obama wins Florida, has he basiclly won the election?
The opinion polling for all states won by Kerry are strongly in favour of Obama. Florida's 27 EC votes would give Obama 279 EC votes.

If he takes either Ohio or Florida, and the rest of the states stay the same, Obama wins. Both Florida and Ohio look good. There are a few other states that could do this.

Feeling better, guys?

btw, one other interesting thing to watch is just how close Texas is.

Obama has no chance of winning the state but if he could get within 5% it would be remarkable.

1. He'll do better than Kerry, who got smashed last time around. (as did Gore)

2. No former Texan Governor to compete with this time around.

3. Large African American population.

His loss will probably fall within the 6-10% range.

Even so, a fair effort.

Have to admit I am starting to feel a little better now. But I wont be happy until it's confirmed that Obama is in the White House.

Florida looking promising for Democrats.

Virginia still a chance as they turn to coastal votes.

It seems to me that Obama has won most of those counties in Florida that Clinton won in 1996, the last time the Democrats carried Florida. I'd say that McCain will struggle to win Florida unless his numbers turn around big time.

I seriously think that Indiana can just about be called right now. I doubt anyone will do so for an hour or so, but Lake county will be a deadset LANDSLIDE for Obama. The biggest city is 85% black and has been flooded with Obama volunteers.

There's still a plausible path to victory for McCain here.

Every state called for Obama so far was also won by John Kerry four years ago.

But McCain has to win virtually everything in play at the moment. Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana. The lot.

But if you're a McCain supporter, you really want the networks to hurry up and call Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and West Virginia.

What's going in the south?

Update: Arkansas closes on the half hour. Will we get a call there?

Even if he wins all those I'd rate Obama the strong favourite. IA + CO + NM is enough.
