I did note that you had the second most experienced team behind Geelong in round 1.

Even without Rocca ;)

I guessed you also noticed we did some recruiting over summer.

Our main issue with youth/inexperience is with our key forwards. Across other areas we now have a reasonable mix.

They have all been around a few years though so they should be at a level where they start contributing. Rusling could yet be the vital ingredient we've been missing, but we can only speculate at this stage.

We told you that last year.

It wasnt true last year.

We recruited some senior players because we lacked experience in the midfield (especially in the clearances with Ball but also Buckley, a potential tagger) and ruck.

We also got tons of gametime into Sidebottom and Beams last year, as well as Anthony who was a 12 gamer at the start of the season. Toovey was a 17 gamer. Dick was a 6 gamer. All played mostly in the seniors in 2009. Wood was a 29 gamer.

Now we have a mix - except for key forwards - we didnt have that last year, especially in the ruck or midfield. And because we were using Didak and Davis up the ground to cover for our weakness, and with Medhurst injured, our small forwards werent as potent as they could have been. They have been good so far this year and have been able to cover for our out of form talls and get us over the line twice, once against high quality opposition.

The only area that is largely unchanged from 2009 is defence, although Reid is more ready now to cover for Presti after a solid apprenticeship in the VFL.

Has Mick Malthouse outstayed his welcome at Collingwood? Going into the 2010 season he is the longest serving coach without a premiership in the league. Has he under acheived with the resources that he apparently has at his dispoasal?

Also with Buckley set to take over what sort of emotions are running through the minds of some of the players he played with? Its no secret his attitude to some of these players was less than favourable. Surely these blokes know the writings on the wall for them at seasons end. Buckley will be keen to stamp his own game plan and rules and players like Davis Didak Fraser Medhurst may find themselves out the door. Time will tell but interesting times ahead as he takes the reins.
Personally I think the Buckley /Malthouse thing was a stupid move by Collingwood heirachy anyway. Both these blokes have gigantic egos and get up peoples noses anyway without shoving them together in this stupid "I.m the next coach, yeah but I'm coach NOW!!!!!!" nonense. Why is Buckley treated like a god by you Magpie supporters.
He was a good footballer but he could, I think, be a real pain in the neck personality wise to some people. You could say that about Mick but there is a difference between how people perceive those two and players like Mick.
What about him comming into the huddle and taking over the other day ,see the look on Buckleys face. Mick was saying "not yet mate not yet".
I don't think they have the right characters, either of them, to work together like maybe
Williams and Laidley.

Fu, who kicks bags for Geelong? Mooney is scared to take a shot and Hawkins hasn't nearly made it yet. They have a quality list and get goals from the mids and small/medium forwards.

There isn't one set formula. The best overall side generally wins the flag. We can win a flag with Cloke and Anthony/Dawes/Rusling/Fraser but we need a quick skilled mid and some luck. Sure I wish we had Brown/Franklin/Reiwoldt but we haven't and they aren;t going to be draftable at where we finsh for the forseeable future.

Until we match Geelongs total output, then we cant compare our set up to Geelongs. We dont have big forwards that even match their big forwards output as poor as that may seem.

Brown was a very distant 3rd banana in the Lions....Lynch was the bloke crashing packs kicking goals and Bradshaw was the next option....Brown was the raw kid who was learning the ropes.

In 2002, Big Bad Brown was the Lions 8th highest goal kicker, 8th....

Lynch
Aker
Bradshaw
Headland
Voss
McRae
Power

all kicked and averaged more goals per game than the almighty Brown!!

Brown is the perfect example that big blokes take longer to develop.

Brown was still jumping into packs, running back into oncoming players, just not to the same effect he is today. he was a natural born CHF. Not one of our current crop of big men have the same instinct for the position that brown did as an 18yo.

I dont believe all this guff about bigger blokes taking longer to develop. J Brown didnt take that long.
Your statement that you dont think big blokes take longer to develop.

Browny was busting packs and tearing games apart as a teen in the AFL. Can you name one at Collingwood who has had the same impact as Brown had as a teen and later? he is a natural. Other than Rocca, we havent had a bloke who can impact from a key forward position for a long long time.
You start out super strong on Brown...busting packs and tearing games apart

Then temper it to simply jumping into packs

ie J.Brown took a while to develop into the big brute of a key forward he is today. Even Rocca took ages to develop, all through the 90s he was an average CHF at best....took him til the early 00s before he was able to stamp any sort of authority on a game.....prob around 6th season or so.

J.Brown also prob his 5th-6th season before he became a proper dominant power forward.

Yet Anthony, Dawes, Brown, and Reid are entering their 3rd or 4th seasons and have been written off....they are still developing, sure odds are that they wont become Riewoldt or Pavlich type dominant power forwards......but they both dont have any flags....whilst an 'adequate' forward in Mooney has 2 in the last 3 years.

Anyone else just catch the 10min MM interview with Keka on ESPN?

I doubt it will get much media coverage as MM spoke about what Bucks was doing, how he was progressing and how he is looking forward to the 5yrs ahead. He gave a positive report on Bucks and how much he is learning etc...

But that won't sell papers.

Brown was doing the things from day one that a player born to the position do, currently we dont have a player on our list that has any of those inherent qualities. Is that simple enough for you?

What a terrible week for Collingwood and its coachs. First of all they get completley out coached on Friday night. Everything was in there favour and still were made to look second rate.

Then Mick comes out and lies about abusing a player from StKilda. Then his Captain and President lie to protect him and they all look stupid.

Then they go watch there reserves and they get belted with there big forward line hopes getting smashed. Rusling the next Coleman Medalist having 7 goals kicked on him.

Monday night the AFL fines Mick and Licca for the shambles they created.

To top it off Leigh Brown wasnt cited for his gutless behind the play bump on Riewoldt which means hes free to play this week.

Great week Pies keep it up:thumbsu::thumbsu:
