Butts is the defender that's expendable if we need to off load one, is injury prone and gets the least amount of disposals of all of them, even Borlase can find the pill more and still Play the lock down role.

Murray Worrell Keane and the depth of Borlase is a great treasure trove.
Butts may not get a ton of possessions but that's not what he's there for, he's a lockdown defender and we need one. Can't have everyone just flying for marks. He also has the height to go with the giant forwards that most teams have now along with the resting rucks, Murray, Keane & Worrell giving up a chunk of height to the 200cm+ brigade. Butts also has the least goals conceded and contests lost of any of our defenders.

Let's also remember that we currently have one of those 3 available and just Borlase in reserve. Have we ever had all 5 fit at the same time? I have no issue having 5 on the list and them competing for spots on the rare occasion they're all available.

If we offer him 500K, he'll be playing somewhere else.
How much above the average salary of $441K pa would you pay him?

Keeping in mind he is on the fringe of our best side.

Is that average salary last CBA or upcoming one? Imagine that average goes up a bit. Fringe member is a bit of a stretch, has played every game since rd 2 and is our leading interceptor. I've been as critical as anyone of his defensive fallibility but his strengths mean he's part of our best side. Even if that means he or Worrell moving forward or to a wing.

But they key here is not what I (or the club) would pay him, it's what another club would pay him. The market will dictate his worth and a key defender with high level intercept ability and plenty of upside is worth more than $500K a year now. Imagine Pies or Dogs or someone will come to him with 4-5 years at around $650K or quite possibly more. If we want to keep him, that's what we would pay him.

If you pay someone on the fringe of your best side 50% more than the average salary, you will have a cap problem if you repeat this for all of your best 22...

Since his return from concussion, Keane has played every single game and had more time on ground than any other player on our list. He's an above average interceptor with great athletic abilities, creative ball use, and a ton of improvement still left in him. In other words, pretty much the opposite of a fringe player.

Worrell can play forward. He was considered a swingman when drafted.
I really like this flexibility in football players. Every team needs a Shane Ellen to break glass in case of emergency .
Keane has this ability in spades as well . Great hands, an interceptors mentality and a physical presence.
Given another pre season of learning and Burgess, reckon he could well be a breakout defender next year.

However, there is no evidence Keane is on the fringe. He's held his spot since round 1 and would be our starting CHB round 1 next year if current performance is anything to go by.

And we would be a very stupid football club if we thought he was on the fringe.

if we had a full strength side then Keane would be on the fringe

Key backs we have:
Murray - CHB
Butts - FB
Worrell - CHB/ Third Tall

Keane - CHB/ Third Tall
Borlase - FB

Worrell & Murray are 1st choice

Keane is fighting it out with Butts for the 3rd position.

That is fringe imo.

So we are stating now:

Murray -FB
Worrell - CHB
Keane - Third Tall

Butts and Borlase - reserves

Butts is best 22 in most AFL sides.... he will be wasted as a backup.
Murray has basically taken his job at AFC.

You'd like to think that Collingwood's desperation levels - and therefore Keane's value - is going up all the time at the moment. Doesn't mean we have to pull the trigger but hopefully there's something attractive on offer.
Collingwood have some significant retirements imminent too. Sidebottom, Pendlebury and Howe should release a fair bit of cap space.

It's an interesting tussle which I expect we lose due to the darling relationship between Collingwood and AFL media. They'll whip up a story to help get him "back home".

Either way... pretty good decision to come back to Australia to play our football. Mark Keane is definately getting a good payday coming his way from somebody.

How often do we just play 2 talls though, imo worell doesn’t play as a key back.
You missed the point...

Worrell & Murray are 1st choice for the 3 tallest defenders.

Leaves Keane fighting with Butts for the last spot.

Keane and Butts play very different roles. You couldn't play Keane on a McKay or Daniher. Butts is your lockdown on the big forwards. Keane is shorter than Cripps and doesn't have the experience with bodywork to compete with that kind of player.

Indeed, which is why we should play horses for courses depending on the opposition forward line.

May depend on the outcome of Murray... but closer to $500k than $700k.
Intercepting defenders at his size are very much in demand, $500K ain't keeping him that's for sure and certain. 700K would be ball park I'd be thinking given his upside possibly more. Not a great defender 1 on 1 but as an interceptor he will only get better.

'Keane is good at what he does best "ïntercept", Butts is good at what he does best "lockdown"the oppo's best Tall Forward.

Surely you're not seriously suggesting Borlase is anywhere near as good as Butts locking away the oppo's best tall forward.?
