It's a book over a thousand years old. Please prove to me its relevance in 2015.
It appears nothing has relevance in your world, just do what feels good, and make everybody happy and the world will be a wonderful place. Look around you, listen to the news it isn't working. The reason most people don't like what is in the bible is because applying it requires change and self discipline and the recognition that somebody could have laid out a life plan for us to follow so many years ago. Because we live in the age of enlightenment don't we.

That's all an opinion you're entitled to hold. Now, if you could explain this 1000+ year old book's relevance in 2015?

I would ask you to explain to me how it isn't relevant.
If you're claiming something's relevant you have to back it up. You can't just say "this is relevant, prove me wrong".

If it's as relevant as you claim, it should be easy for you to back it up.

Agreed. The burden is with him to prove it is relevant, not the other way around. It's always irritating watching someone respond with "it's true, prove how it's not"

WOW!!! I am speechless ..... you know more atheists than Christians who have read the bible from cover to cover, I would suggest you probably just know more atheists and of course if they read the bible they wouldn't be biased....at all. Please don't mix religion and Christianity, they are not one and the same. Isn't 5 or 6 scriptures repeatedly? and all are in context unlike you're quoting. Jesus would not be disgusted with modern Christianity and he does ask us to judge. Oh well as Bob Dylan sings "You gonna have to serve somebody"
Why would atheists be biased? Atheism is just the absence of belief after all. Not the denial thereof (although you could argue one begets another). I doubt you read the link I posted, but it seems that this actually helps critical analysis (surprise!) as the actual message is read for what it is.

My quotes are out of context? Well yeah, perhaps slightly, because I'm not going to post the whole of Leviticus on Bigfooty just to prove a point.

Let's look at a Biblical quote I mentioned above but didn't go into because it's actually insane.

Deuteronomy 25:11-12

When men fight with one another and the wife of the one draws near to rescue her husband from the hand of him who is beating him and puts out her hand and seizes him by the private parts, then you shall cut off her hand. Your eye shall have no pity.

Spin that any way you want but it says pretty uncertainly that if there is some junk grabbing going on, a girl's gotta lose a hand. I'm sure if you ever saw this situation happen in real life, you would step in and ensure the husband completed the steps ordered by the Bible? After all, it would be hypocritical to say you take it literally and it's word as law and not do so.

5 or 6 scriptures actually isn't all that much considering the hundreds of verses that suggest one should treat women like they are the scourge of the earth. But of course women don't make the homophobes feel "icky" so they just brush those aside.

If you want to move away from taking the Bible literally and move into a context and interpretation debate, that's fine. It would actually weaken your position though as that abomination verse is about the only one mentioning homosexuality that can't be interpreted or analysed differently. Maybe that's a moot point though. The old law is a curse unto us after all. The Bible both suggests that we should follow and unfollow it. Let's not go down the rabbit hole.

So you're telling me if Jesus looked at what was going on in Christianity's name he wouldn't weep.

He'd look at those screaming hate-filled slurs at women entering abortion clinics (considering abortion is not even mentioned in the Bible) and go "Keep up the good fight!"?

He'd read the news about the statistically higher rates of depression and suicide in non-heterosexual people and go "That's the way! Hit em harder!"?

Did Jesus preach love or hate?

I'm interested to know why you think it isn't working? What should I be looking out for on the news? Be specific, what do you seem wrong with the world other than the refusal of some to follow your faith?

Is that you Jesus?

That's when they say 'I know God is real as I have faith and I don't need to prove God is real.'

Actually it's blind faith but let's not let a good story get in the way.

I'm sorry that you are so angry and mixed up I hope you can come to terms with what is true and real in this life and understand what the bible is really saying to you.

Ha ha ha! I've met and had a beer with Random a few times before the footy and angry and mixed up is not how I'd describe him. More jovial and happy.

Keep the bible bashing up :thumbsu:

Are you a child , something has been shown to work for thousands of years and just because you pretend it is not relevant , you expect me to prove that it is.

You do not understand Christianity at all. Jesus knew there was right and wrong , there has to be , that is why he told the women at the well that her sins were forgiven but go and sin no more, he didn't say you are forgiven keep doing it. Sin is pretty clear in the bible if you care to look into it and homosexuality is repeatedly stated as a sin, old and new testament. Democracy has nothing to do with right or wrong , without right or wrong ( direction we are heading) western society will quickly fall. Perhaps that is what some want. Perhaps it is part of a plan that will be fulfilled no matter what man does.
This position of Godly right and wrong precludes the existence of God, but more importantly assumes it to be the only standard of right and wrong we should live by. Well, what if you don't believe? What if you don't rely on God to be your moral compass? Why should someone else's religion be the standard to which you are held?

We could also go down the road of looking at Biblical texts of 'right and wrong', and draw our own conclusions as to whether some of what's portrayed there could ever be considered right.
