AFLW 2024 - Round 9 - Indigenous Round - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
I agree with that. I think the club has indulged in too much of a self pity party of late. However, it is a bit rich of the Victorians to be calling us whingers. Weren't the Victorian clubs the one that were lobbying the AFL to stop us training as a group during the brief period when it was banned in Victoria but not WA? Plus all the whingeing that has resulted in the soft cap policy and all the hand outs for the Victorian clubs and paying for their training facilities when we had to pay for our own. Plus the whingeing about imaginary and mathematically disproven allegations of crowds affecting the umpiring decisions favouring Perth teams when playing in Perth (but somehow doesn't affect the umpiring when the Melbourne teams play an interstate team in Melbourne).I'm not usually one to jump on Barrett and Lloyd's coat tails but they're spot on here. Gavin Bell seems like a great guy but the decisions since Vozzo left the footy department need to be examined.
At the end of 2021 Vozzo joins the club executive as senior corporate counsel, and instead of going to market to search for the best person for the role, West Coast decide to split the role, leaving Bell as Footy Manager and Ben Sharman Football Operations Manager.
Fast forward to the end of 2022, post our worst season in club history, Bell is elevated to GM of Footy (somewhat stealthily), while the footy department is 'bolstered' by the addition of Steve Trewhella as a Development Manager. Meanwhile Sharman's actual role remains unclear and the original decision to 'split' the GM role looks farcical in retrospect.
Bell doesn't carry the same gravitas as Vozzo and this latest attempt at deflection (never mind the club opting for the extra flights back to Perth anyway) not only reflects poorly on the club, but is another example of public missteps made in the past 3 years that have damaged the club's brand. The idea that West Coast are 'auditing' each injury is fine, but how about an audit of the entire football department and its regression in the past 2 years? The fact that period coincides with in-house promotions to key roles within the club is telling.
Bell isn't up to the GM of Footy role, he never was up to the GM of Footy role, and the club's insistence that the best candidates are within the four walls is emblematic of the overall malaise that has engulfed the club's footy department.
RANT OVER

Pod branching out into comedy. Probably a good move given no one involved at WC will get a gig in the sports industry again.I listened to an interview with one of the WCE physios on a S&C podcast and he was saying they implement alot of principles from the Knees Over Toes guy Ben Patrick which is considered pretty cutting edge and really helps strengthen and protect the lower leg. Doesn't seem to be working though.
Fair to say Simmo is well and truly in the “just bad luck” camp going off this interview tonight.
Thanks Kane

Pretty valid point imo, really bad optics from Gavin Bell that just gives the media unnecessary ammo, shows his inexperience.Damo hates us We ask for another home game, he's straight in front of the camera to say we are crying again. But then he concedes he completely understands our point of view, and his only criticism is that we didn't ask privately

Not sure how hes in the footy manager roll. 15 years as WAFL assistant coach/WCE player welfare + high school teacher and all of a sudden into a really important roll. give me crazy Vozzo anyday
Was at East Perth during the alignment with WCE and never heard a good thing about him.
