Was just watching a replay of that Monday show with X, Hamish Brayshaw and Mick Barlow. Xavier mentioned that because Culley was injured in game, he gets match payments for games he will miss and has missed. That seems interesting. Not sure if that sounds 100% right but would that affect our salary cap with all the injuries we have had over the last few years ?

In 2011 Freo had a terrible injury run which spelled the end for Mark Harvey. I remember they had to get permission from the AFL to go over the salary cap due to the issue you have highlighted.

Thanks. We would have been close to asking for permission as well ?

I wonder if the contracts have changed or the salary cap rules have. As Briztoon said, Gold Coast had a worse injury list than ours a few years ago and I didn't hear anything about it then.

EDIT: Here is the article from 2011

Fascinating piece of insight there, fully appreciate you putting that up. Might be worth giving the show a watch.

Makes sense though, bloke gets injured can't be expected to miss financially due to no fault I spose.

This is the relevant agreement in the CBA. A player injured during a game or at training in the week after playing a game is entitled to full match payments for games missed to a maximum of 30 weeks. The minimum match payment is $5k

There’s no exemption in the salary cap for injury payments

By my count there’s 11 players on our injury list that would be eligible for the payment so $55k this week

The fallout from that Freo game with Gov, Ryan and Cripps all injured long term would be about $200k in injury payments just for those three

It’s not something I was aware of and it’s significant

Wait, I thought match payments were only for those living on the bread line.

Are you telling me a player on $500k+ still makes an extra $115k from playing week to week?

I think when you read that player X is on a contract worth up to $800k per year that figure likely includes match payments

Is Ed getting worse?

“And in fact, you wouldn‘t believe it, Josh Daicos got a $1,000 fine for protecting his brother from being attacked by five Swans.

“Collingwood players shouldn‘t have been fined. There should be a 50m penalty and a free kick.

I wonder if it was the other way around, would he still be up in arms. Likely not.
Yet, I don't disagree with him - it's not necessary, and is a blight on our game, not a blast.

He's gotten a lot worse now he's gone from Collingwood.

Footy Classified has Kane, Barrett, Caro and Hutchy, and yet Ed is easily the most annoying every week.

The club would budget for him to play all 22 games is my thinking.

So the major news of the week is:
Nasty spectators boo - a new phenomonom
Players have to stop belting opponents in the head
Dont fight on the field- the umpires will ignore it but you will be fined

On 360 last night, Gerard was asked most at stake for this round.
Call me crazy, but Carlton, Sydney, you can even make a case for Richmond or Freo, but no.
It's apparently WC.

Harley Reid and Nick Watson on tonight.
Be interesting to see how Reid is dealing with the hype.

If you look at it from the perspective that we're the only club not to have a 10 game losing streak, we do need to win one of our next four, plus the one against North at home later in the season.

I feel to get Harley Reid we need to plumb new depths of suck. The melts if we do may only be beaten by the melts if we don't. Either way it should be spectacular.

That’s just the industries disrespect for the gold coast, and just assuming that because where playing them at home we should win, it was like the comment from a guy at work today that doesn’t watch footy when I told him we had the suns this week he said oh surely the eagles win that, it’s just the assumption the suns are shit because they have been for so long but not realising how shit we are😂, if we were playing the bulldogs or another mid table team I think Gerard wouldn’t have said that.
