How does Thomas Hobson get in?
If the Lexus winner jumps in TH will need three above to drop out, otherwise two.
Theoretically Foundry could pick up a 1kg+ penalty in the Bendigo Cup and go above too but that's unlikely.
Most likely to come out is Qewy who probably needs a tidy win to go forward to the MC. Next likely is Gallante, though we had conflicting reports on it's likelihood of running yesterday. After that, the next doubt is Hartnell (decision around Friday). The rest all seem set to run barring mishaps. I think they will run one of Qewy or Hartnell which will mean it TH will need Gallante to be pulled (or a mishap to another runner) and no Lexus jumper.
Perhaps 40/60 to get in?
They could always pull Wicklow or Max mind you.....

Hartnell now confirmed as a runner by Godolphin.

re: Gallante - Nick Williams pretty adamant last night he was still on track to run despite press reports to the contrary - might have been some confusion as Nick was saying he was a maybe for the LEXUS not the cup.

Feels like TH's main hope is if a few of Lloyds go amiss or he pulls them out - no way I can touch it antepost given where it sits this close to the race (plus I think he'll be way too slow anyway :D)

Is it possible for some legend to briefly give their own one or two sentence description summary of every horse in the field to help narrow it down.

I'm still hungover from Cox Plate day.....THAT'S THE WAY IT'S GONNA BE LITTLE DARLING

Red Cardinal - German import who flopped big time in his biggest test this prep when getting r*ped in the Kergolay. Poison unders on that form because of his connections whose horses are always massively overbet (see Amicus in last years Caulfield Cup).

...Someone else can do the rest

Boom Time - Champion of the turf who walked in last start in his biggest test where he took a major step forward. was massive overs that day as the trainer in general struggles picking his nose. looks right in it if he can stay the 3200m.

Watch 86 MCup, Kiwi nearly does it again as a 9yo !!...but breaks down about 100m from WP.
May not win, but gee he goes close.
Denied a place.

For those that love a big from the back win, eg Kiwi.

Check out the 1974 Melbourne Cup.

Think Big comes home like a 2 year old sprinter. It was something else - doesn't get credit for that one.

But who cares, he won 2 of them :)

"There's not much point in putting someone on that weighs 52[kg] is there?" Williams said. "Steven Arnold would be an example of a rider like that and he would have been my first pick.

"But he is Mauritius and riding in Mauritius on short course horses is no good practice for a Melbourne Cup."

Well it could have been worse than Frankie I guess.
Steven Arnold an absolute gun jockey.

I'd put him on before Frankie in Australia.

But for what it's worth, I'm over Lloyd winning. He buys them for millions, good luck to him, but someone else can share the spoils this time.

I'm quite sure his record five winners as an owner is shared by his wife Sue Williams. Doesn't get mentioned much.

Godolphin sniffed around long and hard last year and I reckon QEWY might be the one to break the duck for them. It's going to happen for them eventually.

Versatile horse, led the whole way at Geelong and won well, ran midfield in the Melbourne Cup and improved sharply down the straight, and was then the best thing in Australia that day leading from post to post and winning the Sandown Cup last year.

He'll be there.

Super run today.

I don't know who reeled off a faster final 200m, Galilee or Think Big.

That 74' win was Harry White's 1st Melb Cup win of 4 and his worst! Could not have run up another backside if be tried any harder. He basically got spat out into the clear through no intent of his own and the horse grew wings.
Handbrake Harry at his worst!!

What sort of "dice" are they thinking of rolling when they wonder if Vengeur Masque can get in from 30th spot in the OOE??!!

Galilee was very very very very special.

I posted this on our Collingwood board in our spring racing thread.
Might be of interest to people.

The Melbourne Cup field as it would stand; see further below for other details:
  1. Hartnell 57.5
  2. Almandin 56.5
  3. Humidor 56
  4. Tiberian 55.5
  5. Marmelo 55
  6. Red Cardinal 55
  7. Johannes Vermeer 54.5
  8. Jon Snow 54.5
  9. Bondi Beach 54
  10. Max Dynamite 54
  11. Ventura Storm 54
  12. Who Shot Thebarman 54
  13. Wicklow Brave 54
  14. Big Duke 53.5
  15. US Army Ranger 53.5
  16. Boom Time 53
  17. Gallante 53
  18. Libran 53
  19. Nakeeta 53
  20. Qewy 53
  21. Single Gaze 53
  22. Wall Of Fire 53
  23. Rekindling 51.5
  24. Amelie's Star 51
The above would be the Melbourne Cup field as it stands right now.
This would be the saddle cloth numbers (I don't think I've made an error, but let me know) as it stands now.

Caution! Qewy may get a penalty in weight for today's win and say it was 0.5kg he'd become saddlecloth number 15 and each after would drop down 1 number. A 1 kg penalty he'd become number 11. No penalty it is as above.

Ofcourse the winner of Lexus would leap frog into the field and depending on weight etc the saddle cloth numbers would alter.

In case anyone is wondering how numbers on saddlecloth work for equal weighted horses? In handicaps it's simply alphabetical in order.
