Someone might know the story better, but from memory it goes something like this.
2001 Freo couldn’t win a game to save themselves. Owen hung around till Rd 17, coach had been sacked, nothing was going right. The board was a bit of a mess, no one seemed to know their a-hole from their elbow and the club was millions (around 6 I think) of dollars in debt.
Head honchos from AFL house came over, basically said ‘you can’t survive like this’, announced to the world that Freo were ‘a basket case’ and told the club to clean up its act, fix up the money mismanagement, get their shit together in a big way or potentially lose their license.
In desperation the Croad trade was made to try and bring back some fans by landing a big name player from the east, Chris ‘the showman’ Connolly was brought on board, and together with Cameron ‘shiny suit’ Schwab, the club was sold as starting a new golden era, supporters came back and new ones jumped on, things turned, and Freo continues.
So other than a ‘get your shit together or we’ll fold you’ the club received no assistance or leg up in the way that St Kilda, North Melbourne, Footscray and Melbourne were receiving and continued to receive. Basically a ‘grow up and stand on your own two feet’.
Meanwhile the above mentioned clubs were in debt up to their eyeballs and unable to survive without money being poured in from the AFL, then within a decade GCS and GWS were introduced with bezillions of AFL dollars pouring in, but Freo got nothing.
Pretty much sums up our entire existence, really. Sink or swim.
Which is the way to be. If we win a flag, it'll be hard earned and the first flag without an asterisks against it since we entered the comp.

We can't really complain though, being the 2nd team in WA has still given us a huge competitive advantage from a population/footy state wise to most of the rest of the competition. We are the poorer younger brother but in a loaded family and the older brother is clearly a prick.

This next period is going to see us really generate some serious revenue and i doubt we'll ever get another hand out from the AFL.

Caleb Serong does a weekly interview on Sport FM Breakfast. Sounds a bit more pumped than previous and I'm always impressed by the way he speaks.

Anyone hear Ellis and Embley on that triple M podcast they do at the end of the weekends footy.
There was a lot of ol’ nonsense talk, rallying the demoralised troops targeted at eagles fans and a little bit of a condescending undertone in their praise towards freo too I felt.
We need to stick it up them ****ers as long as we possible can in this next period while they are shit.

Not exactly as I would have put it, but basically yes, that is right.
Re Connolly, don't slag off at him, he had the worst job in the AFL at that stage of Fremantle's development. He had to coach a very ordinary side. He had to sell it to the supporters. He had to sell it to the members and would maybe members. He had the job of finding big time sponsorship. He had to sell the club to the media.
Remember also that we were $8mill in the red when he and Schwab came to Fremantle. These two plus Rick Hart , in three years got us out of the red into the black, all with NO assistance from the AFL
He proverbially had to push the sheeeet up hill with a one tyne fork.
Please don't down Connolly.
But we were the kicking boys of the competition after the VFL/AFL had on our getting a licence, had our concessions cut in half from what the Eagles and Crows got.
This is not a knock on the Eagles, but we came in in 94, or our licence was granted then. The Eagles had won in 92 and 94. The AFL
were sheeet scared that the Dockers would become a force just like the Eagles, so they cut our concessions.
There was a lot of crap came the Dockers way in the early days, and not a lot has changed.
One thing that I am glad about is that we are the only club that has not had a hand out at the end of every season for money from the AFL.
Read all about how the Melbourne FC miraculously became a champion team.Check it out some time.Interesting readin.

Ellis is a tool and Embley has all of approximately ten brain cells. Simples.

Don’t listen to Ellis & Embley but do listen to Hard Ball Gets. Interesting dynamic, Ellis the Alpha being the ex-player but he really doesn’t have any insights greater than your average nuffie.

This year he is big on Brayshaw and well off Bailey Williams. Previously Brayshaw was a crab relative to Worpel and Bailey Williams was the future of the Eagles. He is good for a laugh and the occasional anecdote, but ability to pick talent? Nope.

Dont get me wrong, Melbourne are a very good side but I'm getting a little sick of the narrative that
its Melbourne then daylight this season and that Freo have only played bottom sides. I dont think we're
in the premiership conversation just yet but the table below shows we've had a slightly tougher draw
than them and if it weren't for 1 bad quarter against the saints we'd be 5-0 also.

Melbourne Freo
Played (Rank) Played (Rank)

Dogs (11) Crows (10)
Suns (13) Saints (5)
Bombers (16) Eagles (17)
Port (14) Giants (15)
Giants (15) Bombers (16)
Richmond(12) Blues (7)

AVERAGE (13.5) (11.5)

When referring to the D's its "They've played 3 of last years finalists and the sleeping giant Richmond..."
Pfft! Looks more like no team in the top 10 to me!

We are definately getting more favourable media of late but thats only relative to what we're used to.
Really enjoying the ride so far this year and can't wait for the Cats challenge. I feel like we'll go
down in a close one.

Just preparing for the headlines "Hapless Freo have wind taken out of their sails in first challenge"
and " Melbourne dismantle surging Hawks without getting out of second gear"

Anyone watch AFL360 tonight? They literally couldn’t remember if Freo had ever won a game at Kardinya Park. Seriously. Then it was like “oh yeah, they won that final down there. That’s right. One of the Hill brothers…. Which one was it? Kicked the sealer”.

****. Me. Dead. The non-Vic teams are irrelevant to the Vic media. Unbelievable.

West coast are absolutely ****ing atrocious this year yet they are getting TWO Friday night games in the space of a month, plus a primetime Saturday’s night in round 11 against the bulldogs???
Meanwhile we haven’t had a Friday night match on primetime since 2016 (next weeks doesn’t count against north, there’s a big game in Vic at the same time on Seven).

That is going to change. Surely.

By "surely" I mean it could be possible that it may change. In some parallel universe.

We will find out a lot about how they are thinking tomorrow when round 12-15 is revealed. In round 12, one of the standout games is brisbane v Fremantle. Demons v swans is the other big game in that round.
Will they put two non vic sides on a Friday night? I suspect we might get Saturday night on channel 7 and I’m ok with that too. If it’s Sunday twilight, it will be absolute bullshit.

I didn’t mean to come off as slagging Connolly at all. I called him ‘the showman’ because that’s basically what he had to be to bring back the support and grow the membership. He got us to finals in his second year, and if it weren’t for him and his showmanship we wouldn’t have the people come back to the fold - a huge reason why the club got out of debt. PLUS - he introduced ‘TNT’ to the post-game ritual so he gets a big tick for that too.
