Moa Hope Dropped for round 2

Bullshit. Self importance is the last thing you would accuse her of, if you have read the book. Most of her life has been filled with anxiety, self doubts and feelings she is not good enough. The book is more about her love of her family and the challenges she faced before she was picked to play in the AFWL. Hopefully she can rise above the negative comments, she has already shown in her life just how tough she is in overcoming adversity.

I think I have have confused you, sorry. I don't know Hope, I don't really follow her career that closely. The question I was answering was about the public view of her. Rightly or wrongly being the face of Collingwood's women's team and being a prominent figure before the launch of AFLW, and being the only player to release a book before they had played a game has built up an expectation of her prowess as a player. She has not lived up to this expectation, so she became a whipping boy.

The book was released and sold simultaneously with the launch of the AFLW, it features a picture of a country football player about to enter a national competition, the book fits the same mould as the plethora of books written by former footballers that are usually written at the end of their careers, in that sense these books are usually 'earned' by a lengthy career in the national spotlight.
I think releasing such a book, whatever the content may be, is a misstep. She added pressure and expectation to herself when she already was going to be judged harsher than most players due to her 'marquee' status.

It's similar to the reputation Jack Watts developed in his early career, can you imagine how much worse it would have been if he'd written a book about his life before he'd played his first game?

Glad she's been dropped; was decidedly average for the hype she had last season (admittedly not entirely her fault they used her as the face of the league), and was no better last week.

Give a young player a chance to show their ability and make Hope earn her spot back in the side - same way any under-performing player in any team would be expected to do.

A few others have pointed it out already but success at a lower level doesn’t necessarily mean success at the next level.
Chris Murphy (you’ll never have heard of him) won the TAC goal kicking around 2000, never even made it to VFL level.
Guy a few years above me at Mooroolbark kicked 70 odd goals in U18s and spent most of his time in the 2s and now plays 2nds at Powelltown.

Sometimes they ride off the back of a successful side, other times they’ve got a gaping hole or 2 in their game that they can overcome at a lower level but not a higher one.
I saw Hope play a couple of games last year (at local level) and she’s what I’d call clever with her movements and skilful once she has the ball but seemed to lack speed, strength and also intensity.

She was by far the highest goal kicker in those exhibition games, kicking 6 in the last one...it is worth watching the highlights again of that game

In that game the average ability of the footballers remains higher than in the AFLW....but they weren't as fit and certainly wouldn't be as well organised or drilled

To watch that and say she isn't a natural footballer is ridiculous in my opinion. To say she hasn't been able to adapt to the professional step up is a different thing altogether

I think the expectation will always be there, whether she wrote the book or not. She already had a high profile and had appeared on Australian Story, on the ABC. At no stage in the book, did she pump herself up. There is a part in the book where she is to anxious to get out of the car to go to training, because she didn't feel she was good enough. The book is not really a football story, it is a story of the obstacles someone faces on their journery to realise a dream. She also talks about Susan Alberti and how young girls have sent letters to her, telling her she has changed their lives. Stories like these should be told, because we know too little about the girls in the AFWL. She seems the type of person that would have been embarrassed to have a book written on her life, but she did it because she cares so much about women's football, and she cares so much about the people that look up to her.

Have seen her play a couple of times outside the AFWL and there is no doubt of her talent. Her confidence is obviously shot, no wonder she has hung out the back a couple of times, Jason Dunstall would struggle to kick with that type of delivery into the forward line. Cant understand why they dont give her a run on the ball, she had 10 teamates last week that were just as bad as her. Collingwood are not going to challenge this year for the flag, dropping her is not the answer.

Dont know who 21 for Melb was but you would hope she isn't playing AFLW on that performance lol

Reports out she will be dropped.

Smartest thing the Magpies could do.

She was terrible tosay the least last weekend, definately didn't look up to standard.

Not trying to be to hard on her, but she seemd a bit scared to go into contests, and just hung out the back.

Thoughts?
Dont know about scared but if players like Hope and Arnell cant get a kick,it means the comp is improving and in the end the players that have peaked and are closer to state league standard will be pushed out.

Not sure she has the fitness to play midfield.

Not sure why there is so much disdain for Hope. Collingwood are the ones, that in hindsight, have made a bit of a blunder. Whether it was the selection as a marquee player, or if it’s now a coaching issue, they’re clearly not getting the ROI they would have liked. That’s their error, not hers.

As an aside, I’d be interested to see how many of these who are sinking the boot in, actually watched her play prior to the AFLW...
Jack Watts.

Another poor article by this garage website.

"And no matter how you spin it, it’s not her fault"

"But from the end of the 2017 season onward is where the blame for Moana Hope’s poor AFLW form could no longer be put on her, but solely on the football club."

Amazing it's not moanas fault for her poor performance! I mean she kicked 100 goals before and now can't get a touch.

Now I was told she beat up against the poor sides so I did some research.

In her 100 goal season she kicked 75 of her 100 goal season against the bottom 4 sides.

Of those bottom 4 sides 2 of them had a percentage less than 12%!!!! the other both under 33%. You can now see how lopsided the Comp was and how heavily these bottom 4 sides were getting thrashed

Against the top 4 sides she was held to 0,1,2,0 goals against 2 of them.

But oh it's not her fault she can't get a touch now.

the games changed, coaches are smarter, teams are more organised. Adapt or get left behind

*dont get me wrong 100 goals is a very impressive feet at any level but just explaining why she's struggling now

Oh c’mon ...

... imagine after last season Steele Sidebottom had got himself a trade to Carlton and Taylor Adams had gone back to GWS?

Our pitchfork brigade would be camped out the front door of the Holden Centre demanding Buckley be summarily sacked ...

... right up until Caro would deign to suggest that “All isn’t right at Collingwood” and so our pitchfork brigade would dutifully switch targets to The Age’s Docklands HQ.

That’s basically what’s happened to our women’s team. Our two top B&F players last year, one of whom was in the leadership group, made their apologies and went elsewhere.

We’ve performed well below elevated expectations.

All isn’t right at Collingwood’s AFLW. Anybody calling that out has got solid evidence to back it up.

Yeah, agree with the run on the ball. Or even just let her push up the ground more like a Richo or a Nick Riewoldt. Sometimes you just need to get your hands on the ball. One thing from my point of view is that she is not tall enough to play the role she wants to at this level - the defence seems too organised for her. Tayla Harris is one who could play this deeper role, but even she seems to play further up the ground.

Lack of fitness to do so perhaps? She doesn't seem to be able to physically bully defenders, and doesn't have the height of Harris or Fredrick-Traub to be a contested marking target.

Yeah, maybe. She does seem leaner than last season though. I suppose that doesn’t mean she necessarily got a bigger tank though.
