Bluelegs
Digging into the why
Bullshit. Self importance is the last thing you would accuse her of, if you have read the book. Most of her life has been filled with anxiety, self doubts and feelings she is not good enough. The book is more about her love of her family and the challenges she faced before she was picked to play in the AFWL. Hopefully she can rise above the negative comments, she has already shown in her life just how tough she is in overcoming adversity.
I think I have have confused you, sorry. I don't know Hope, I don't really follow her career that closely. The question I was answering was about the public view of her. Rightly or wrongly being the face of Collingwood's women's team and being a prominent figure before the launch of AFLW, and being the only player to release a book before they had played a game has built up an expectation of her prowess as a player. She has not lived up to this expectation, so she became a whipping boy.
The book was released and sold simultaneously with the launch of the AFLW, it features a picture of a country football player about to enter a national competition, the book fits the same mould as the plethora of books written by former footballers that are usually written at the end of their careers, in that sense these books are usually 'earned' by a lengthy career in the national spotlight.
I think releasing such a book, whatever the content may be, is a misstep. She added pressure and expectation to herself when she already was going to be judged harsher than most players due to her 'marquee' status.
It's similar to the reputation Jack Watts developed in his early career, can you imagine how much worse it would have been if he'd written a book about his life before he'd played his first game?
