What questions would you ask at Ed's Fan Forum?

Thread Rules:

Please try to keep this thread to the questions you would like Ed / Pert / Bucks to answer.

There's another thread around to discuss the merits of the forum itself.

If you want to engage in discussion about a question, feel free to hit 'reply' and copy and paste it to a relevant thread elsewhere. There are threads on just about every topic, but in the unlikely event that there is no relevant thread then create one.

Are we going to be active in the trade period?

What are our goals for next year, what is a realistic result given our age profile?

If they give cliche answers like 'We really just want to have our effort at 100% and improve our contested ball next year'. I will be extremely dissapointed.

Q - Why was Gary Pert so bullish about our chances this year in stark contrast to how the teams has performed & more importantly in light of Nathan Buckley recent comments?

Q - What are the main reasons for the lack of goal kicking options in the team? In 2010 we had 7 players averaging a goal per game, in 2013 we had 4 and this year we had 4.

Q - Why are we not investing money into televising our VFL games?

Why are our memberships more expensive than other clubs?

What is being done about the Ponsford Stand?

What will be done about goalkicking?

I think the most pertinent questions still come back to why we actually follow this club, and that's the on field issues.

So;

1. What do we actually spend our massive financial advantage on? And how does that relate to on field performance?

2. Have we innovated enough in regards to coaching and strategies?

3. Do we have specific coaches for skills (kicking, handballing, marking, tackling) and all positions?

These are the things I really want to know, because there seems to be this thing in the AFL (and in many other sports) where the fitness staff are taking over from the coaching staff and that's getting in the way of player development.

1. Why is the game day entertainment so tacky?
2. Why are our foot skills so bad?
3. What is being done about the injury crisis we have had for the past 3-4 seasons?
4. Why does one of the youngest premiership teams need a rebuild so soon after winning?
5. Do we have a forward structure? If so why has it been hiding for 3 years?
6. Why do players get injured so late in the week, every second week?
7. How are contract talks with broomhead going ?
8. Why is Kennedy always sub?
9. Will we be looking to be players in free agency?
10. What are the expectations for next year?

What was our investment in media in 2014 beyond what was spent in 2013 and why was it directed to media instead of medicine/ sports science? This is on the back of poor injury runs in both 2012 & 2013.

What the **** is going on with our ball movement out of the back half? Teams run it out of our back half like shelling peas on the flip side us exiting the back half is like pulling teeth...

In relation to the second question I intend to watch all of our kickins (offensive and defensive) in 2014 so will have a lot of statistical data behind it.

To lighten the mood:

Did you enjoy Pendles sitting Daisy on his backside in our first win over Carlton?

Do you perceive there is something of a leadership shortage at the club, Pendles great first year being an exception. Who of our younger brigade do you see as the next club leaders, e.g. Langdon, Elliott, and what structures are in place to ensure they thrive and are supported?

This fan forum is a great initiative. How seriously is the club taking this - reaching out to fans - and is there some way or a structure in place, whereby you can communicate back to us on the outcomes of the forum?

1) Will we be chasing an experienced coach, similar to the contract that Malthouse reneged on, to help Nathan out in the game day coaching side of things? People like Woosha or Chocko Williams.

2) Are you in favour of the sub rule and interchange cap?
Do you think these rules have been better or worse for the game?
Have they played a part in the decline of our gut running midfielders over the past couple of years?

What has Mathew Lappin been doing for the last four years? What improvements has he made to our forward line? (Goals kicked from 2nd to 12th in league)
Over the last 4 years our goal accuracy has gone from 49.7% to 46.7% and from 6th to 16th in the league. What is being done to increase individuals kicking and also to improve where the shots are being taken from?
Why do we have full time forward, midfield and defender coaches but not a full time ruck coach?
How will the football department spending cap affect the club?
Why does the club lie about players injuries that are first reported as 1-4 week injuries but never reduce in duration (Beams 2013, Oxley/Reid/Freeman/Etc. 2014)
What is going wrong with our injury rehab? Bill Davoren - High Performance Manager, Michael Dugina - Strength and Conditioning Coach, Kevin White - Sports Scientist, Blake McLean - Sports Scientist & Chris Howley - Rehabilitation Coordinator?
Why do we consistently receive the least free kicks? (2012 last, 2013 4th last and 2014 last) Is it our players, game style or the umpires? Fortunately we also receive the least free kicks against (2012 last, 2013 last and 2014 5th last).

OK here's a couple

  1. How can the club improve it's transparency to members with injury updates? This year, like last year was comical to see '2-3 weeks' against most players never changing.
  2. Has 'leading teams' led to a measurable shift in culture and how is it's impact being measured across the team?
  3. What area's of the club are being reviewed at the end of the year and what details will be shared with members?
  4. How seriously is the club taking the sports science area in relation to injury prevention; rehabilitation; and player longevity? Can you give us some examples of where you believe we are leading the competition in this area?
  5. What do you see are the 3 biggest deficiencies across the current senior team and what are the plans to fix it - who will be accountable if we fail to meet our KPI's?

Ed.
1.) How will you prevent Collingwood ever playing in one of the AFL's ludicrous experi-mental Sunday "twilight" fixtures again?

2.) How will replace all the members like me who leave if you let this farce continue?

Pasted from the other thread

* Injuries. "The number of soft tissue injuries we've had in the past two years, and the number of set backs players like Beams, Reid and Freeman have had, suggests there is an issue beyond just bad luck. What is going on and what are we doing to fix it?"

* Match Day Experience. "A number of the recent additions to the match day experience have been quite intrusive/irritating in terms of volume (The Holden get loud thing) or contrived and silly (dance troupe, kiss cam). Given the extra costs associated with getting decent seats as a member, what are you doing to improve match day for members, rather than using them as a product to sell to advertisers? "

* Blair. "Nathan, I acknowledge I don't know as much about football or about our players and their performance as you do. I also don't want to ask you to negatively single out a player, so please take this as a chance to explain the positives about this guy. But many fans don't understand what Jarryd Blair brings to the team to have held his spot all year, and to have just had his contract extended. He doesn't kick many goals, and his work as a defensive forward doesn't seem to result in an attacking defender being shut down or in the ball being locked in our forward 50. What is it that you see in him that we are all missing?"

Why do we drop the non-household names as soon as they put a foot wrong while the established players get away scott free despite being mediocre for yonks?
What is the rationale behind playing 3 specialist inside mids in some games and none in the others?
Why do our subs continue to be the players perceived to be 22nd best player on the day while most clubs use impact players in that role?
Why do we persist with defensive zones that are clearly aren't working?
Why does our side lacks spark and comradery that were there only a couple of years ago?
We've made a concerted effort to make our Club a fun place to be this year, how far away are we from achieving this goal?
Why do we continue to send mixed messages to the supporters in regards to our contending credentials?
And finally what strategic and motivational aspects of Bucks' coaching has impressed the Club to extend his contract so early in the year?

"Did you expect so many fans would ignore their own understanding of the elements of the list and the changes made, and all the preseason media commentary, and instead focus so tightly on one comment by Gary Pert that we were aiming to be a contender for the flag this year? To the point that many people feel they've been deceived about the club's prospects?"

OK table doesn't work?

Please explain the mismanagement of Ben Reid, Ben Sinclair, Nathan Freeman and Adam Oxley this year

My questions would be around conditioning, injury management and rehab :
  • what does the conditioning/fitness program entail?
  • How is it specialised or tailored to individual players and the link to position/on field role?
  • What are the fitness goals and how is endurance balanced with strength work?
  • How much analysis and biomechanical studies are done on players to reduce or mitigate injuries, or even understand the severity of an injury?
  • Are injury/soft tissue problems trended and are there lead indicators that are being monitored, root caused and corrective actions put in place in a timely manner?

10. What are the expectations for next year?

Great Question. I'd love to hear the answer to this one if it ever sees the light of day. If they do answer it can someone please post the answer.

To Eddie:

1. Under Nathan's leadership, this team has slid down the ladder for 3 consecutive seasons and we have just missed the finals for the first time in 8 years.
Can you admit that the club bungled the whole succession plan, especially the choice of successor.

2. Other than Nathan, who else was considered to succeeded Mick Malthouse. Did you interview and consider candidates outside the club because I find it hard to fathom it is the best interest of the club to replace a hugely successful premiership coach for someone with no previous head coaching experience despite his exploits as a player.

3. Is the club ruthless enough to move on a great of the club like Nathan Buckley while contracted, for a better candidate that is available such as Essendon's Mark Thompson, a proven premiership coach.
