Which 1/2 misses out???

The old "we have more states than you" argument is classic spin doctoring if ever I've seen it. It's not even clever spin doctoring. It's only used by the unthinking.

Canberra is the 1/2 but in reality it is only a big NSW country town.

Only a sook would do that.

Heres something to think about - Two thugby games in Sydney its supposed heartland draw combined 29,615 on fri and sat and ONE AFL game on sat night in western Sydney can pull a massive 44,235!

Here is something to think about - a paltry 85,000 watched the Swans vs WC in Sydney on the box, beaten into last place on FTA by the new 'Iron Chef', Top Gear.

Its bums on seats that count the TV ratings will improve over time.

How much did the Storm game rate in Melbourne on friday oh sorry it wasnt on live and the only RL team in town could only pull 13,000 to a top game after being premiers and around for over ten years? = Pathetic.

If the RL is SOOO Huge in Sydney why arent all the grounds full all the time??

Heaps of reasons. Most common being laziness.

Watch out AFL! if League fans ever start flocking to the grounds like you lot, AFL would be dead in 2 years..

If AFL is SOOO huge in AUS, why hasnt it killed League already?.

Could it be that crowds actually mean jack sh!t?

Well, it has taken 20 years to get to that 85K number, so how long is it going to take for it to improve?

It was 118,000 not 85,000.

And 118,000 watching the Swans in Sydney (plus 44,000 at the ground) is 110,000 more than the 8,000 or so Melbournians who were wathcing the Storm at midnight in Melbourne.

If you're going to criticise the AFL's non-heartland areas you better look at your own non-heartland. The AFL hasa presence in it's non-heartland. Queensland has 50 AFL players which is two teams worth, and the Lions can still get around 100,000 on the box some weeks in a much smaller city than Sydney.

What presence does the NRL have in its non-heartland? Aside from having NO ONE watch on the box, no players come from WA, SA and Vic, and there is no grassroots at all.

The 118,000 that watched the Swans in Sydney last night was more than the combined audience in Melbourne for all 5 Storm games. In fact, the combined audience in Melbourne for all 5 Storm games is not even 70,000. 4 of the 5 have been on free-to-air and all of them at midnight.

Apologies, I obviously quoted the Brisbane number.

I guess you have to scrape every set when the number is that low, ie last in its slot.

I am no expert on TV ratings, but if you can name me a show in our history that has been beaten so badly, over such a long period of time, and hasn't been either pulled or moved?

Everyone knows that the only reason that Ch10 persevere with these abysmal figures and not push them to midnight, is because it is written in the TV deal that the AFL pushed. Otherwise, they don't get the great ratings in the Southern capitals.

That is smart work by the AFL, and clearly shows up the NRL, but the reality is that after 20+ years of being in Sydney, am I incorrect in stating that the AFL doesn't rate in Australia's #1 market? .

TV figures are not the one and only measure of the growth of a code. Since 2000, the participation figures for NSW/ACT have grown by 60%. More people are playing the game, more people are exposed to it and there are more NSW born players in the AFL than ever before. Crowds are good, as always for Swans games and the propsect of a second team up there wll enhance the code further.

TV ratings will eventually improve, but they are not the one and only measurement of success.

Apart from Rugby League, pretty much NO other sports warrant free-to-air exposure in Sydney, but that doesn't mean the people up there have an interest in Rugby League ONLY. Union and Soccer (A-League) rate so poorly on free-to-air they are shunted off to Pay-TV. Does this mean no one follows them?

TV ratings are one measurement out of many to determine the strength of a code.

Your highlighted part is true, in that apart from League, no other Football code rates in Sydney (outside of any Socceroos game, Swans in the Finals/AFL GF and the occasional Bledisloe Test).

Even on Pay, it is only League and AFL that top the ratings, with the NRL still at the top. The S14 ratings are so poor, that the League U20's regularly beats it.

I take your point that TV ratings should not be the be all and end all, that would be idiotic, but it does show the general interest in any sport, as the punters will watch if they are interested.

All I am saying, is that it will be a longer road to hoe than many care to admit.

After watching Barry Hall smash the crap out of a player not even facing him, the last thing we should be doing is calling other codes thugby etc.

True, was a low thing to do, the other guy obviously didnt want to fight. But i cant help thinking this will only be a positive for the AFL in sydney. It distinguishes the game from Soccer/Netball.

I think Hall would have needed a few combinations for it to be an asset. Also, Staker would have needed to stand up for a bit longer. It was just a tap and he fell down and never got up again. Maybe Staker should have played soccer. Same with that other bloke, Hunter I think, who ran in to remonstrate and just fell on his arse. Not a good look for the AFL. In some ways it reinforces the netball image.

I'd actually like to see him against someone like, Monty Betham.

Charlie Web from the Cowboys is another who was very very good at boxing.

I'd love to see it, just like all those years ago when the RL players punched the shit out of all the AFL players in that exhibition.

Big Mal Vs Wacko Jacko bahahahaha

Jacko forgot his batteries that night, hell, a 12 volt battery wouldn't have helped.
