Most Overated Player on BigFooty?

Dale Thomas easily.

Lead clangers at Collingwood in 2007.

19 goals 21.

Kicking style looks a bit epileptic.

The thing that annoys me is when the commentators say he is so skilful. Maybe it's because he bounces the ball every five steps, which according to them makes him spectacular.

And coming from a Collingwood fan. Somewhat admirable.

Adam goodes any one? Gets noticed just because he is tall. only get cheap hand balls out the back and never doesn his own dirty work. dont really rate him that highly, although i admitt i dont get to watch alot of him.
G Ablett is slightly over-rated to in my opinion. Seems to always run backwards before going forwards. Does some flashy things which make him seem a lot better than he is. I think he over performed big time this year and am looking forward to him crashing back down to earth in 2008.

The topic was most over-rated player on Big Footy. Considering you have just re-hashed what everyone else on here has said a million times before I don't think you could consider him over-rated on Bigfooty anyway.

Also the part of your argument I hove bolded isn't true at all. He gets a lot of contested ball and do you really expect a bloke of his height and skill to be throwing himself on the deck to dish the ball out to team mates while Kirk and Bolton stand around?

shannon byrnes...how does he sleep at night knowing that he has a premiership medallion over the likes of budda hocking or g ablett snr???

gets far too much recognition on the cats board, although admittedly his main supporters are the teenage girls who post...

Allow me to be a little controversial.

I'd say that Glenn Archer would be the most overrated player of all time.
An icon of the game - yes.
Shinboner of the century - whatever that means.

But as a player - he was 'just a player'.
I found it horrifying when people were talking about the retirements of Ricciutto, Hird , Kouta, Buckley and Grant and we're putting Archer amongst them as far as being a footballing great.

Its not his fault - but the carry on during his career if he did anything even semi-brave was sickening - whilst other players (even in his own team) do the same things and it is relatively unnoticed.

Plus he got towelled up a stack of times throughout his career whenever coaches looked to exploit him.

oh sh!t - here comes the backlash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with most of your points however I would argue that calling him 'just a player' might be going a bit far as he is definately one of the better players of the modern era. It's the same with players like Scott West: The respect people have for the way they go about the game sometimes seems to elevate them above their actual worth to a team.

You're going to get flamed but I can definately see where you are coming from.

I know - because there's something about Archer that no one is allowed to criticise him - or everyone cracks it.

Perhaps saying 'just a player' is too harsh to get my pioint across. But I don't think there has been any given year where he would be in the leagues top 20 - but as you say - he gets elevate becasue of the sort of bloke he is and his attitude.

Nothing to be jealous of, sure he had one ok season see if he proves the test of time.

Most overrated: Cam Mooney average at best but just got the best delivery from the classy midfielders put me in at full foward for the cats standing at 5''9. would still kick more than him but going from number of posts probably Egan always gets the 3rd best forward with scarlett and harley getting the better forwards

Tool alert. Only a person who watched no Geelong games would come up with that crap. He towled up Brown, Pavlich etc. He played on whoever was at CHF, Tom Harley got the third tall but you would know that if you actually watched a game.

Mate I 100% agree with you.
Archer went from being one of the games most under rated players in the mid 90's to being one of the most over rated footballers I can remember.

He was a very good player. Very hard at the ball. Very courageous, very honest and all the rest of it. However at the end of the day he was just a good footballer.
Not a champion.
Not a superstar.
Not in the same company as Hird, Grant, Buckley, Riccuito.

I agree 100%, and for a long time have thought Archer the most overrated player I've ever seen, but I don't wanna start the argument, cause I'm too lazy to finish it, and it can't be done over an internet forum, give me a pub and 6 beers, and I could argue the point all night.

No I don't believe so.
I am talking careers. Not 5, 7 or 10 years.
(Grant has only had two bad years this year and the year he did his knee but that is another argument)
Archer is a good footballer no doubt about it.
However that is all he is. A good solid footballer.
He was not a star.
Hird was a superstar.
Buckley was a superstar.
Grant was a star
Riccuito was a star
Kouta was a star (and he has been worse than Grant over the last 7 years)
Archer is not quite up to the calibre of those guys.

One of my favourite days was seeing Grant towel up Archer, then Martyn, and then McCartney - all before half time. He's given Archer a few baths over the years.

i'd go [for the teams sake] not who was better or worse

HIRD
RICCUITO
ARCHER
BUCKLEY
GRANT
KOUTA

you don't get it at all

buddy is overrated because some people seem to think he is god, he is nowhere near that right now, just look at his last game.

thats what i said, he is rated on his potential so he is overrated atm. until he strings some good games he is overrated

Thomas is a front running down hill skier who flashes in and out of games. he does look good at times i'll happily admit, but he's inconsistent.
Front runner, he dragged the pies over the line in the wet against st.kilda. He iced the game against Sydney and in the process gave the swans talented youngster Malceski a bath!

Sure he is in his second year of footy, so he doesn't do it every week.....nobody expects him to, but the fact that he can do it bodes well for the future!

If he improves a bit opposition coaches may think about throwing a tag on him and we'll see how he copes. of course we obviously don't know yet as it hasn't happened.
I guess i cant blame u for not actually watching Carlton play football these days, it seems that Carlton supporters only come on these boards around draft time when they get to talk up the next lot of superstar draft picks they will get!

Carlton v Collingwood this year, one of Carlton's boom youngsters, A.Walker (wasn't he pick #2 a few years ago), went straight to Thomas and tagged him all day and tried to rough him up at every opportunity.....pity it didn't work and Thomas still kicked his couple of goals and had his 17 disposals!

A kid in their second season of footy that manages to finish 6th in the clubs b&f, when the club plays in a PF simply aint over-rated, they are producing!

I doubt there are many defenders that were around in the late 90' that weren't given a bath by Chris Grant.

Genuine superstar, not star - superstar.

Forget his last 100 games, and remember his first 250. :thumbsu:
