I laugh reading criticism of Tom Stewart like ‘he’s not accountable/doesn’t take a key forward/just gets cheap possessions’

fu** how dumb do you have to be?

do you think he just runs out there and decides to do that and is lazy and unaccountable?

or do you think that with Henry, Henderson, Kolodjashnij and Blicavs as our ‘nominated’ key defenders that MAYBE the myriad coaching staff have assigned Stewart a role marshalling the backline and being the guy that is there to intercept, clean up, take marks, use the ball basically better than any of our midfielders, as spearhead our attack out of the back half?

It’s fine if that’s the case, but that designated role is generally accepted as the easiest position to play, relative to all other positions.

If you’re the person in defence who has the ball the most, you also carry the most responsibility in hitting a target and not turning the ball over. Do you think most KPD players are going to routinely hit a target 50m away (and before saying he just kicks to contests like the idiot in the AA thread, he doesn’t - he finds almost with total accuracy, a teammate every time he has one that is in any space at all).

just as Tom Stewart would struggle to just jump into a role against a #1 forward, you give most of the elite guys that DO take on that role the responsibility of playing Stewart’s role and they couldn’t do it. They’d be turning the ball over regularly, not being where they need to be, getting caught going to assist the wrong contest etc etc.

that’s what made players like Scarlett and Fletcher so good - they actually could lock down a KPF AND use the ball as effectively as most players in the midfield.

our three best ball users are Duncan, Hawkins and Stewart.

Luke Shuey?

Never been AA. Shit captain.
14 years as a mid and never even reached 20 brownlow votes in a season.

Plus add on the whole plays for free kicks and ducks at every opportunity, if it wasn’t for the premiership/norm smith you would say his career has been a complete failure and waste of talent

If it wasn't for the four premierships I guess we could call Clarko a waste of coaching talent too. ;)

In terms of awards Tex Walker. Surprisingly never been an AA and he’s talked about as one of the best forwards in the history of his club.

In general pub talk and media it has to be Pendles. The media never mention his mistakes and every hand ball is lauded as one of the best handballs in the history of the game. Never really been an X factor either, longevity pretty much the only thing going for him.

Tex has been in the AA squad 4 times without a jacket, which is the record. He should have made the team at least a couple times.

He has very similar career stats to Hawkins and Riewoldt (just with fewer games), but he’s copped way more criticism for his on field performances then those 2 have.

Tbh he’s probably one most underrated players over his career.

There is no doubt the missing games has cost him there. Hes only played 20 or more games 4 times in his career. Riewoldt has 13 times, Hawkins 11.

Sean Darcy, can't run or jump and kicks like a wet noodle.

Brodie Grundy for mine, was a knee jerk recruitment by the Dees to soften the blow of losing Jackson.. looks good on paper but he has shown relatively little this year.
