Still have a problem controlling all, but a quarter of an hour of
the play and yet conceding 100 points.

I blame Pann for calling out Karma in the Richmond debacle
and then watch our rucks get decimated along with Hamling.

Johannisen was sharp in for a big year and tall players or not
it won't matter much too the end result.

The result is disappointing bit meaningless but you can still take out of the game how players perform. People comparing stringer, bob and other players to guys who were today fighting for their spot isn't not a great way to look at it as stringer and similar have proven what they are capable of.
Thought bontempelli late start to pre season showed good first half poor second half. Campbell going down hurt a lot maybe we need a roughie type who can play back forward or in the ruck as we looked short down back too.

Thought Daniel cemented his round 1 spot while Jong lost his chance. I would have Collins in ahead of Adams.
If fit Dickson and hamling come straight in probably for McLean and Adams

I think the point is we were doing some of the things that lost us games last year. These are beginning to look less like aberrations and more like habits.
Agree

Though I have Adams as our number 1 defender at the moment based on preseason with Bev heavily relying on him, but he is not a number one defender, he needs another tall to help him. Wonder where Hamling and Roberts are at, seems they're well back at the moment as they've barely played.

Nab cup. Great first half. When we are on, we will cut you up.

Bevo needs to look at our structures when the team is exhausted.

Not bad. Reckon we're shaping up alright. Our first half was really good, we lost all intensity in the third and we fought pretty hard in the last.

Boyd was really impressive. He's at his best when he gets space to run and jump and was able to get that on quite a few occasions. Kicking let him down though. Unfortunately with Campbell getting hurt he had to ruck more than I'd have liked, it would have been good to see how the Boyd-Redpath pairing fared today. Redpath struggled a bit today I thought, definitely behind Boyd now for Round 1, but he works his ass off and is a great set shot so I'm far from righting him off.

Thought Adams was good today except when he had the ball in his hands. Second guessed himself too much with the ball but that'll come with more experience. I'd be playing him round 1. The defensive setup we choose will be the most interesting selection conundrum now that it looks like Roughy will play ruck by default, I think we're probably a tall short.

Not worried about the loss, it's preseason so who cares. Good lesson to show what happens when we don't bring the intensity. A few of our best players were just a bit off today to (Bont, Murphy, Stringer, etc.) but they'll kick it up a gear when the season starts.

Suckling looks like a great recruit, was a great fit today, really excited about his season. Libba was really rusty (I didn't see last weeks game but presuming it was the same). Did some good things still and he'll be really important when he gets his confidence back.

scoreline shows we pumped them in the 1st, they pumped us in the 3rd and the other 2 quarters even.

Sure, the result isnt important in a practice match (2 pts) but the way we allowed the pies to dominate us in the 3rd quarter is a concern.

Without having seen the vision (radio and stats only) they got up in the third with multiple centre clearances allowing them to bang the ball into the F50 before we could set up defensively. I think they said on the radio the pies at 8 centre clearances to 1 about half way through the third quarter.

Sounds like there were a few guys out there playing like millionaires waiting for someone else to get the ball to them. Its great we are all about the run and spread this year, but someone has to win the ball first, and if they dont, we have to be in a position to pressure the opposition defensively.
I was at the game and most of the doggies players looked like they barely got out of second gear the entire game. A few were having a red hot go to stake a place and prove the doubters wrong especially T Boyd who was very good. Caleb Daniel was also excellent and Toby McLean did very well when he came on in the second half.

I could care less losing in a nab game as long as there's no injuries which unfortunately Campbell looks like one, or hopefully just being cautious.

Collingwood came out firing in the second half and for some reason really wanted to win a nab cup game. Good for them.

Decent game.

Our worst players were our best players, so there's plenty of upside there. Wood, bonti, stringer, Libba and picken all sucked massively.

Jong - I'm just not a fan.

We also only played with 22 with campbell off and Collins resting.

Adams scares the shite out of me against that freo press. If we're only playing one key defender and Morris, it has to be hamling, not Adams.

Forward 50 entries were quite poor too.

Witts smashed us in the ruck when BTC went off.

Exactly this. Also Toyd was a bit of a highlight today, his work rate, to me, looks to have improved quite significantly.

Agree with all but would add macrae to the poor list thought it was one of the worst games I've seen him play

Cracking game guys, and epic finish. Thought we were done when Stringer was running into goals. Actually, I thought we were done at half time :drunk:

Looking forward to playing the dogs in the season proper :thumbsu:
Varcoe won them the game there and a few other run downs and one of the best snap goals earlier.

We experimented with a small defence in the 3rd quarter - it backfired but because of our midfield not our backline itself.

The advantage of a small defensive unit is the ability to pick off poor entries, be stronger when the ball hits the ground and inolement a pressing rolling zone.

The disadvantage is that, you know, when being asked to defend high balls inside defensive 50 you're giving away height.

The problem with that is though when you're losing constant centre clearances and contested possession the latter happens more than the former.

When you're playing a 192cm lead up full forward as your ruckman that tends to happen.

We'll almost certainly play one or more of Hamling, Collins, Roberts or Roughead in that team as a key defender for Round 1. That will diminish the "impact" of the tall marking forwards.

Also, we'll have an actual ruckman in the ruck for Round 1 as well.

Lastly, we had the greater amount of inside 50's and more scoring shots. In a practice game, I'd much rather take more scoring shots and inside 50's but still lose rather than the vice versa.

And just because a review post of mine isn't complete without a whine about the umps, take away that Murphy free kick and give that high tackle to Hunter and we've won by two goals. Oh well.

Isn't this almost the pefect practice match to have?? One great half and one por half. Gives the team and coaches a good idication of what works and what we need to work on without losing 4 points.

Stringer and Bont wont play as bad as they did today again this year. Not worried about much from today's match.
True it's not like we're perfect and expect to play perfectly for the whole game. We have two weeks to polish up with skills and decision making plus tactics for round 1. Probably tactics would be a big one. Other than that it gives the coaches some things to work on.

Sorry don't rate them. About middle of the road 12-8th for mine.

NSIS? A top notch group of champion mid/forwards (pendles, swan and Sidebottom) showing the way to Treloar, Adams et al and some excellent forwards in Moore and Cloke plus the two best young up and coming ruck in the league (Witts/Grundy) as well as Cox lurking in the background. No surprise if they are top 4 this year in my opinion and not sure what more you could want if you were building a team to attack the season? Think they will shock you this year if you've got them midfield. Time will tell.

That was a cracking game - boys did well. Could have gone either way and we desperately missed T Campbell when he left the field. Had Boyd kicked his 4th instead of missing and a boomerang going down for Moore? Had stringer kicked the one he should have? We had our chances...

Really? I thought he was one of the better performers in the second half
Apart from that shot on goal that fell way short

Just thought he was very quiet in the first half and then in the second half went to ground easily and made some bad decisions with the ball

Looking at the stats very surprised at the amount of possession he had

The words cracking game or epic should never be used to describe any nab cup game. I'm sorry but preseason games are simply not an indicator of future performance of team or individual player. The only thing I pick out of it are those players on the fringe doing all they can to make the first. Otherwise I hope and pray there are no injuries

Couldn't believe it when the pies fans had the Collingwood chant going. It's a nab game. Put them back in their cages.

I've been a big advocate for Stringer running through the middle but today showed it's still best for the team if he plays deep forward.

He played inside and outside mid, high half forward and half back at various times today. Was okay but nowhere near his best. As soon as he gets thrown deep forward late in the game as we're trying to win... not saying he dominated but... things happen. It's where he can have an impact on the game.

The Bont will be better for the run as well.

I think our centre square personnnel was more experimental in the third qtr ... and it didnt work. No Cambell and Libba there for one.
Pies also seemed to split
Our Defence up eg: virtually no intercept marks from Wood.
We didnt match up well on their fwds eg Biggs on Darcy Moore

I noticed Dahl going to ground a lot in contests, not so much Macrae

It was also annoying the umpire that when we kicked it 25 metres he was screaming not 15 play on..he did it several times

also I still think Libba plays round one

Question does Libba play round 1 on the back of a 16 and 14 possession games or do we ease him through the vfl

Not even a question to answer

Anyone that plays in his spot is so inferior even a 50% Libbas better.

I don't rate our depth as much as some do. We have several good VFL players that will never make it at senior level
