I think OP is assuming that the Hawks will lose Gunston as a FA at the end of the year after not being able to fit him in to their salary cap.

well, i don't see that happening.
We just lost lake, hale and suckling.
We still have gibbo and burgoyne who could retire at years end. Mitchell and hodge 2 years max. Pretty sure that clears a lot of room for gunston.

Teams can still trade outside of Free Agency. Carlile is a Key Defender, that doesn't make sense.
