The AFL will never get with the times, player names on jumpers is a huge marketing opportunity but as usual they can't see what's staring them in the face. Disgraceful organisation.

The only reason they would do it is for monetary gain and for that reason alone it's a horrible idea. You don't need to over Americanise an Australian game by pandering to certain markets. We don't need names on the back of jumpers, you could barely see them on the ground or on a tv broadcast (unless they did a super closeup of it when a player lines up for goal or a ruck contest). They would need to increase the font size which is borderline impossible due to the length of some surnames and the width of a jumper.

After this move they will do what Cricket Australia attempted when they first started Twenty/20 cricket and put nicknames on the back of the top's instead of their real names.

I don't have the time at the moment to explain why you're wrong so I'm hoping someone else can pipe in and do it for me.

Necessary because we have commentators who refuse to tell us who has the ball of they're not one of their favourites.

He's the same guy who when this topic came about a month ago basically argued that I'm an idiot for not knowing who #44 for the West Coast Eagles is (as in, I should know every player from every club's number).

That's stupid though really.

Instead of addressing the cause to solve the problem this solution just tiptoes around it.

And besides it wouldn't stop stupid commentators calling players the wrong names (eg. Brad Boyd, Billy Picken) or even getting players mixed up because like the crowd they'll hardly be in the position to read the names.
