100% right that no one in the afl cares what you think.

I think the AFL care what the fans think, hence a trial. Also because maybe customer success is what pays their wages?

All valid points except last one. There is a minority of commentators are shocking with player names

I should qualify that....commentators "SHOULD" know the names of players.
Plus I'm really not sure names on the backs will help spuds like BT and Bruce get it right.

Did you mean to say it provides nothing except helping the TV viewer reference a face to name rather easily?

How can it be of zero use to fans when there are plenty of fans (myself included) that like the idea and have mentioned that they have learnt of new player's names thanks to having it on the jumper?

Honestly and truthfully you learnt players names from the names on the back?

Just out of interest, were you at the game or watching on TV?

I went to the Pies vs North game and watched a couple on TV. Admittedly, at the game the names weren't much use and I didn't really focus on the TVs around the ground so I have no idea if they were of use in that sense. Watching on TV though I learnt a couple of new players. I haven't watched too much of the Dogs over the last couple of years so I learnt a few of them that I otherwise wouldn't have. I'm fairly familiar with the Carlton, Geelong and Hawthorn teams so didn't really need the names for them. No doubt the names will come in handy for GC and GWS games with the kids they've got running around.

I wouldnt get too excited.
Watched the GWS crows game on TV and couldnt see the GWS names really at all.

I keep seeing the "I couldn't see the names" argument pop up but I, and apparently many others, had no trouble with it.

Also I'm not sure Good and Bad should be the only two options.

I dont think its 'bad' as such, I just dont think it offers anything.
Its like having all players wear war paint, i wouldnt care if they did it, but its completely pointless.

How can you say that when there are numerous people in this thread that have stated that they benefited from the names? Sure, you can say that they do nothing for you but it seems that every anti-names person likes to imply a sweeping statement along the lines of "if I don't like it then it's crap and no-one else could possibly like or benefit from it". See the "completely pointless and ridiculous" comment above.

Variable ticket price structure, playing games in timeslots that suit TV networks and not patrons, things at games like kiss cam and hug cam, tweets showing up on big screens while play is happening, names on the back of tops.

Just another move to Americanise the game.

Well the big honchos and eddie went to the US on a junket last year and it seems they basically came back with the idea that we need to now go down the path of the NBA and NFL in terms of entetainment. Kiss cam is just pathetic.

But just remember that the AFL doesnt really give a shit about fans over the age of 24. All these new things are catered for the younger crowds and to entice newer younger people to the game. With the amount of exposure young people have in regards to american sports culture i am surprised its taken this long for cringe inducing things like kiss cam to be used.

I hate it all and its not needed but again i am not who the AFL considers to be their target base. I am after all yesterdays fan..i am more of a hinderance to the AFL because i oppose to the corporatisation and amercianatisation of the code.

I honestly think these people wouldve learnt them anyway, given that most likely if there was a closeup on a player the commentators were discussing him anyway.

Fact is watching 4 games this weekend I could probably count on two hands the number of times that I wouldve seen a clear name and been able to learn it if i had not known the name to begin with. So out of 176 players I saw on the weekend, less than 10 of their names were visible during the telecast.

You think it's merely a coincidence that the first time names are put on the back of jumpers that there are many people stating that they've been able to put some new names to faces? Every game I watched this weekend I watched with other people and we weren't really focusing on commentary. Couldn't even hear commentary at the pub also.

"Fact is" and "probably" can't go in the same sentence. It's either a hard fact that there were less than 10 visible names during your weekend or there were "probably" less than 10 visible names during your weekend. Considering I just watched the 'top 10 of round 5' video and was able to distinguish 10 names within 3 minutes of footage probably suggests you're exaggerating here.

It works at the ground.

My 11 yo daughter came back to me today.

She was on holidays in melb with her mum, was at the MCG yesterday. she was aware of "Walker". From 6 rows back in level Q. She said everyone around her were discussing Walker as well.

How does this happen if they are no use at the ground?

Because someone yelled out "hey Hawkins has changed numbers!", someone asked "who wears 34?" and someone else answered "that's Walker's number".

Had Hawkins been wearing 26 with Walker's name on it, no one would have noticed.

No. She saw it on the screen. There was a close up after 3/4 time. They have them at the grounds too you know. Look. Up.

She sees maybe 1 afl game live per year. Shes 11. For her to notice it must have been pretty bloody obvious.

There is this blindness here that people know everything about every club. The players, their sexual orientation, their partners, who they were having coffee with on their days off.

There are a lot that dont. You know Geelong inside out. Me, i found out yesterday there is a Walker on geelongs list. Still dont have a clue what this walker looks like, or anything about him really. Except he exists.

It wasn't terrible, but certainly at the ground it's fairly useless as most seats are too far away to read them.

If they bring it in that's fine, but I really hope they don't make the numbers smaller to make the names bigger. Watching the Carlton Bulldogs match the numbers are just big enough to read from the top level for anyone who doesn't have perfect eyesight. Any smaller and half the ground can't read the name or number.

Just watched "The 10" to see if you were, as i thought, talking sh!t.
Turns out...you ARE!

Play 10 - No names clearly visible
Play 9 - 1 name clearly visible (Saunders)
Play 8 - 0 names
Play 7 - 0 names
Play 6 - 1 name (Wells)
Play 5 - No names
Play 4 - 1 name (Cunnington)
Play 3 - no names
Play 2 - no names
Play 1 - 1 name (Dangerfield) - right at the very very very end.

So your 10 names are now down to 4 that are disginguishable...in a 3 minute video showing 10 plays in slow-motion and from a number of different angles.

Its not not effective, theres nothing wrong with it, it just doesnt really help anyone.

They had a close-up BECAUSE he wasnt wearing his won jumper

The funniest thing is I realised he wasnt wearing his jumper when I saw 34.

Sure didnt see the name on the back telling me it was a different player.

That tells you all you need to know doesnt it?

The only good thing is that it will save people money in buying the Record!

So in other words an awesome publication will go out the window, to be no longer.
Then the kids that sell it they miss out on pocket money.

Not to mention that the clubs will charge $20 extra for names on the back of guernseys.
