Fyfe is too important and too impactful on contests all over the ground to isolate him to one section of the ground. The beauty with Fyfe is how many contests he gets to, especially late when the game is up for grabs.[/quote
'Impactful' is a big part of 'Cleaver's' game, and one that is seriously underestimated.I remember Cometti describing Troy Cook as a sack full of wrought iron or some such after he flattened Mitchell White in a derby and the Hyden trucky is very similar.Nobody gets anything for nothing around the contest,he plays a very hard brand of footy and I'm sure Cooky would be happy to agree that he's got a few other tools in the box as well.

why would you move your better players out of their prefered position

You do that to win games. Happens quite often. Most positions are a long way from being defined anyway. I am not putting an argument for Fyfe as CHF by the way, but I can see that he could create some problems. And for that matter, an unorthodox forward line with Fyfe, Morabitto and Pavlich could be interesting if you have the midfield power to allow it.

Here is a scary thought, I'm not even sure the midfield is fyfe's preferred position, I was of the opinion that he played all his juniors as a running half forward flanker, forward may actually be the position he is most comfortable with

I know what you mean but im just going on what ive seen

I think the best option would be midfield and push forward cos theres not to many midfielders who can go with him in the air when he pushes forward

Yes fair enough. But we actually have a few other players who can play midfield and push forward. Fyfe could be a Forward who pushes midfield. That is a really difficult match-up. Mind you we actually have quite a few options who can do that also.

I remember when doing a best 22 for 2013 I was slotting Fyfe into the forward line.

Midfield
Pearce#2 Mundy Hill

Sandi Crowley Barlow

If the additional grunt is coming from Pearce#1, de Boer and Neale, and if the dream of Mora-Xfactor-bitto comes real, Fyfe forward has to be the an option at the very least.

Forward
Clarke/Bradley Pavlich Walters

Ballantyne Fyfe Mayne

Actually I wouldn't mind trying a totally different midfield set-up when Clarke/Bradley go into the ruck which features the taller more mobile options of Fyfe and Mora in cahoots;

Midfield
Pearce Ballantyne Hill

Clarke/Bradley Fyfe Mora

And push Mundy kick behind play.

Fyfe and to a lesser extent Morabito are not great kicks for goal. Better off recruiting pure forwards to play the forward role. I think they could both rest there, but would prefer if they were a part of a top class midfield combination. I know if Pav gets a shot for goal anywhere around 50, I have an expectation that he will kick most of them.

All true, but any tall forward we draft is going to kick less goals than Fyfe next season. Having the capacity to impact up forward is critical to the armoury of many midfielders.

One of the big "knocks" on Shaw is his lack of ability to play another position (I don't support this idea). Like you, I think forwards who can mark them and slot them should be on the shopping list.

Gonna get real squeezy up in the forward line this year me thinks.
I guess at full strength our midfielder's are going to be asked to contribute up forward, (especially with a reduced bench) but I certainly hope it isn't at the expense of a proper forward structure.

I still hope we take him.

Yup I don't really care if he's that much of a one trick pony, we're crying out for someone capable of taking a ****ing mark once in a while (the great man aside), watching Keps/Anthony/Clarke struggle to hang on to them last season was so frustrating.

To me he sounds like Kurt Tippett if he could kick.

Agree.
I have always believed Bradley should play as a lead up half forward, but they seem to want/need him to play closer to goal where you really need to be able to take a stationary contested mark occasionally. Might be his knees. I'm not sure.

Fyfe was a deadeye in juniors. He has kicked some of the best set shot goals into tricky winds I've seen.
Fyfe is growing into the mechanics of his kicking and his desire to take high risk options.
He will be a superb kick over the journey, he has everything.
Having said that, he won't be a forward. He is quite simple the best footballer in our team and will be given license to do what he wants a la Hird. He may go forward at times but will be a pure utility. To continue Ross's racehorse metaphor, you don't use a distance runner just for sprints. He can do it all.

Nat said in an interview last year that midfield is his preferred position.

did he? the way he has been playing, it wouldnt surprise me. I guess the point i was making was that he grew up playing forward, it still may be a position that he feels more natural at. He could go forward and be very effective, but lets face it, you could probably play him at full back and he would dominate

Yeah, I think it may have even been one of those "live chat" thingys. Anyway, I've no idea where he played as a junior. And maybe his preferred position isn't his best position anyway? Take Hayden Ballas as an example - this time last year, Ballas implied that he'd always wanted to play mid and really looking forward to the opportunity to play mid... and I think it's fair to say that he's much better in the forward line.

Personally, I'd start Fyfe in the centre square with Mundy and either Barlow or Crowley (depending on matchups) and an occaisional stint at half forward would give opposition defenders quite a headache.

I thought he played midfield as a junior junior quite a bit, but moved to a forward flank when he grew a bit?

I thought that explained why he made the transition to the midfield so easily?

Or I could quite easily have dreamed the whole thing up.

Is there even a place for the conventional CHF these days? More-so is there in Ross Lyon's gameplan where 16 of the 18 players on the field at any one time follow the ball everywhere it goes?

Hammer Nail Head - Your FF is in essence the CHF. Plus ideally another leading target plus a mosquito fleet to break out get it to them and apply pressure. Would love to see Fyfe get back to his overhead marking best - one shoulder this year didn't allow that.

He would. Remember the Adelaide final, 1 vs 1 he laid the perfect spoil and saved a certain goal.

Unfortunately there is only one of him so he needs to be played in the most important position, in the midfield. He is essentially a follower anyway, he regularly pops up in the forward line, backline and all over the ground.

I remember that spoil. Only Fyfe could make a spoil look so magnificent.

yeah... im still in awe of the one handed grab that he took against the cats over Joel Selwood...... Nic Natanui did one on the goal line last year, my dickhead eagles mates reckon he was the only player who could do that rah rah rah... Nat showed them up the very next week :)

I still like Fyfes first floating in front of the pack mark against Tigers in his debut game
