Nathan Ablett officially quits

I do hope that the Nathan Ablett knockers here plan to stick to the same career their whole lives and have so up until now. God help anyone who doesn't find satisfaction in what they are doing and wants to change, if this is the criticism they get.

My criticism is not of Nathan, but of the club.

Here we go. You're pretty good at having a crack in hindsight.

Hindsight?? WTF?? Hate to bring it up again, but I was never in Nath's corner even when he was playing. He never looked too interested out there, if you all couldn't see that your blind.

Give me the blokes who are willing to put everything into their career rather than a talented but unappreciative, lazy kid who walks out the door when told to pull his finger out and work hard, get fit / strong.

I think its a great thing in todays AFL that talent alone can't get you to the top. In days gone by it was a different story. No gut running, no weight training, no strict diets etc... If you become a champion today you've worked hard to get there... thats how it should be.

I can understand your sentiment but in this case the kid just may not feel comfortable in the spotlight - labelling him "unappreciative" is wrong, particularly when he stated that he felt privileged to have been given the opportunity to play for Geelong. As you yourself have stated he was persuaded in the first place to come to Kardinia Park. After the childhood he would have endured, I think Nathan deserves to just be happy, whatever he wants to end up doing.

Having said that it is true that a spot on the list should be now directed to someone who genuinely wants to be there and "bust a gut" to succeed.

The Nathan experiment wasn't a failure; after all we have just won a flag with him in the team; but I wouldn't now be welcoming him back with open arms unless he was sincere in wanting to give a 110% commitment next time.

In a funny sort of way I missed your crap recently..

Time for me to jump in. I've heard things about Nate finding it tough with the training regime that modern top-level AFL players have to contend with. Didn't Nate come straight from Modawarre, bypassing the TAC competition with its elevated training regimes for players? To put a kid from a local league straight into elite AFL circles, it's gonna belt him for three years or so as he catches up. Or burns out.

I don't know Nathan Ablett's personal circumstances but I at least have some empathy for the bloke. I wish him well whatever he does. Thanks for the three years Nate mate - you were part of a great machine!!!

Can someone tell me if they know what he is actually going to do with his time now?? Inquiring minds need to know!!

His manager pickers said he is looking to get into building

There is a massive difference.

I would be happy for Nathan to leave if he decided to leave
A)At the end of this year, when his contract is done
or
B) at the very end of last year so we have a chance to claim another person in the draft.

What he did was pretty selfish, he has left the club at a disadvantage and still in limbo (by saying he may come back). Either stay or go dont sit on the fence.

If nath cut ties at the end of the year before lists are due i think a lot of people here wouldn't mind.

Has it crossed your mind that at that stage he hadnt come to the realisation that he didnt want to play any more?

Maybe so, but you just don't wake up one day and say **** it i'll give up. Twelve months goes fast, i'm sure he coulda stuck it out.

f its anything like his footy career he will only build half a bridge

Oh get over it, the guy was pressured into playing, gave it a shot and realised it wasnt for him. You are having a go at him for quitting and being half-hearted, yet u think he shouldve stayed for another 12 months, keeping others from getting games?

Or maybe he'd decide he doesn't like building bridges and he likes building helicopters instead and he'd build a helicopter and fly over the gap and away and you'll never see him again.

OK, this metaphor is out of hand.

i think its about time to stop talking about nath.........its getting a bit long in the tooth isnt it?

Get over it, whats done is done. Time to move on and stop bickering.

Let the "whinge-a-holics" embarass themselves even further.

Your getting into people for 'whinging' and 'sooking' on here, yet your not only prepared to voluntarily open up the thread, but to comment on other peoples posting, which you deem to be 'whinging' without discussing the topic.

Who needs a life??

The thing that annoyed me was the timing of it all. Since it took him so long to say he didn't want to play, we're now effectively a player short on the list. If he just came out and said it before the draft, we could have either elevated Grima or drafted another KPP. Instead he "ummed" and "ahhed" and basically left us in the lurch. Extremely selfish IMO.
